This guy is a personal hero to me. A few years ago, I was 617 lbs., basically bedridden, with my doctor telling me, "If you can't start breathing normally, we'll have to put you on a ventilator. If you don't make some spiritual changes in how you're living, I'll be signing you death certificate the next time you get sick." I took it to heart, mostly because I want to see my daughter grow up. I'm still a fat ass, but I've lost over 300 lbs, and still working on myself. I feel like Ralphie May: "Don't cheer for that. You know you're fucked when you lose a whole fat guy and you're still fat as hell." But I'm not going to end up like him. I may never be a good-looking guy again, I may never be as strong as I was in my youth, but damnit, I'm going to live to be an old man because I finally decided to have some fucking self respect. Good luck to everyone on the same journey I'm taking.

My doctor, who literally saved my life, gave me the "Rule of Two Hands." "You need a handful of protein, and handful of starch, and that's enough food to nourish you all day. Otherwise, go ape shit on fruits and vegetables." Again, he saved my life. I'm far away from perfect, but he helped me un-fuck myself in a big way.

How did you start? Were you constantly eating before you started?

@@ferndawg91 I started out on my first day cleaning my body out. I fasted for a little over 3 days. Helped reset my eating cycle, and also helped get rid of the bad food I ate before. I’d say start off with a fast you can do and then make sure to get some healthier foods. Remember you may fuck up but don’t let that fuck up throw you back into eating like shit again and also if you can’t workout or lazy to workout just take a walk around the block. Start small or go all out.
@CheesyCheese4203 жыл бұрын
@@ferndawg91 my biggest issue was likely stress eating. Similar to Ethan, I would feel down, then gorge on a comfort food until I was super full. But I wasn't necessarily constant eating, just not making proper choices. I started with cutting my portion sizes and healthier options (rice instead of fries etc.) And did home workouts. Now I work into running almost every day and keeping my portions low. I also try intermittent fasting throughout the day and try not to eat right before bed.

I'm 36, still sober and watching my diet / working out which is a heather addiction 😊 That was my story to make the change, everyone has their own and should be proud of it too. Because sometimes it requires giving up what your addicted to which is nearly impossible in some cases but trust me it's POSSIBLE. I was the type of person who would wake up searching for a beer and if I ran out I'd go to the store, didn't matter what time or the weather. My point is the mind is a powerful thing, gain control of it and don't let bad habits own you.

Got into cycling, and learned diet moderation. When your workout is your hobby, it really helps. The more weight you lose, the faster you get on the bike, the better you look in tight cycling clothes, all good motivation. Now I can climb mountains I never dreamed of and am down to 209lbs. I am dialed in and consistent right now that I'm losing a pound a week, resting heart rate is 58, and gained an extra 2 mph avg over the last two months which is HUGE. Goal is get under 200lbs, over 20 mph avg, and resting HR of 55. It can be done.

Even being much better years later it has always been very slow for me to build muscle anywhere near the average man. If I can get to 30% the strength of an average healthy man by next year it will be much stronger than I am now and was when my health was bad. It feels great and I can be MY BEST. That's what is most satisfying. Being capable to take on life with the best body I can have, without concern for comparison to other people. I can see my pain tolerance has been much higher and I am more at peace with life than those who had it easy, that seem to get attached to perfection or appearance.

Huge fan of Ethan. Thanks to him and others, I have lost 56 lb.'s since January 13th. I am working on getting myself down to 280~, currently 389. Getting there and nothing is stopping me.

Amazing to hear a man talk so openly about diet culture and distorted body image! Impressed by his physical transformation but even more inspired by his mindset shift!!!!
Better sit on couch, stuff face with pizza, watch CNN, and wait for other people to "save you". I'm being ironic of course.

Calories in calories out. Eat in a deficit and you lose weight period
@kJ922-h3j3 жыл бұрын
@@skullcrackers187 to a point, a lot of very overweight people have at best insulin resistance but probably type 2 diabetes. Which makes it very difficult to burn fat when you are running on glucose and insulin. Not to mention your body adjusts it’s metabolism to what you drop your daily calories too, and it can do it permanently if you eat 1000 calories a day for example, as it thinks you only have access to that amount of food so it’s a survival mechanism. If you fast, and pretty much everyone has more than enough extra body fat to fast, it switches to using ketones instead of insulin, and you have an abundance of them so it can actually improve metabolism. There’s a reason properly overweight people always put the weight back on when they think it’s JUST calories in vs calories out

The insane mental fortitude it takes to go to the brink and come back from it cannot be understated. It is so easy to fall into the sunken cost fallacy and feel like "ok well I'm already 500 pounds, it doesn't really matter if I gain 10 or 20 more" which is how people get themselves there in the first place. But to get to that point, and be able to say "no, I need to radically change my entire mindset" and actually *doing* it is just incredible. If you're struggling with weight and the devil on your shoulder is telling you it's too late or you'll never be able to lose the weight, this man was literally at the brink of death at one of the highest weights a human being can get to, and he came back from it. You can to, God Bless.

Joe didn't like that part because "carbs are baaaaad'' so stupid. I was like Ethan, on every diet under the sun. I'd lose I'd gain back and forth. I ended up fatter than ever. I finally started tracking on My Fitness Pal. Adding everything I ate (mostly eating at home for the 1st month). I had carbs, fats, sugar. I only tracked my protein consumption the rest I let fall as they did. 2100 cal diet 160g protein. I started at 290......I lost 2lbs a week for the first 17 weeks.......

@owenhunt3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerwilco1777 If you were ever pre-diabetic then I would wager that your insulin spikes will cause you to get flustered after even moderate carbs, therefore your productivity will go down. When you lose productivity, it eats into the time you have to reduce BMI with workouts. Also tires your body compared to simply metabolising protein. The glycoproteins in your tendons replenish themsleves more often when you taken in sugars, too. So any muscle tears and compound work will always rejuvinate overnight in a much cleaner way if your body is not creating extra glycoproteins in the joints. Eat the best diet you can reasonably afford, my bro.
