The value of diamonds and gold is driven by scarcity. As soon as scarcity is removed, particularly with manufacturing, you actually de-value the very thing you've sought to make money from. Lab produced diamond will eventually destroy the diamond market,; unless ironically a monopoly of sorts is permitted which will over charge for the product - and then your back to an ethical problem.
@Hedning1390Ай бұрын
Diamond is so beautiful and useful that cheaper lab diamonds will only increase demand, so you can make even more money by selling more even though each carat sells for less. Imagine all the things that could be improved with diamond that aren't diamond today because of the cost. The potential market is massive, so it will always be profitable even if the margins shrink to almost 0. If lab grown diamonds destroy the mining market that's a good thing.

i mean i have 1 important question: if its so ethical , cheaper and exactly the same quality etc..... why doesn't everyone start up a diamond making business rather than mining it.
@netcalis10 ай бұрын
The diamonds are identical; but the mined ones are natural (real diamonds), while the other ones are artificially made. You can copy a Picasso; it will still not be a Picasso.
@webapple110 ай бұрын
@@netcalis right but if they are identical and I put to you these 2 diamonds and didn’t mention it , you put them under a scope etc and you cannot see a difference…. A copy of a Picasso will never be identical firstly because Picasso isn’t alive anymore , secondly it could never be put under a microscope and be truely identical
@jonathanarocho89310 ай бұрын
@@webapple1because they aren't naturally occurring. So what if Picasso isn't alive? Your argument is that if it's indistinguishable from the original, people should accept it. That's not how people think. Even if it's identical, it wasn't painted by the man himself. Even if they're identical, one diamond wasn't formed over time in the earth.
@webapple110 ай бұрын
@@jonathanarocho893 somehow I don’t think people are buying a Picasso picture because it looks good , its because it’s good and it’s done by Picasso , if you’re saying people would care because it was created by earth … like I guess but at the same time a diamond is a diamond (paintings cannot be an equivalent argument )
@jonathanarocho89310 ай бұрын
@@webapple1 exclusivity is why people buy Picasso's. That's exactly why people buy precious metals or stones: because, like a picasso, they are finite in their availability. They take millennia to form and tremendous effort to excavate. If Picasso was amazing but painting 1000 paintings a day, his paintings would be seriously decreased in value. Equally, if the quality was identical but mass produced, they would lose value. If their acquisition is no longer rivalrous or exclusive, they lose their value. These aren't principles exclusive to diamonds or paintings. They apply to the value of almost any private good. Any rivoulrous and exclusive commodity could be used as an example. As far as the argument for ethics is concerned, a KZbin comment section isn't where you'll find your answer. The reality is ethics is an extremely subjective field but most would disagree with your assessment of the creation of new industry as unethical based on the phasing out of older industry.
