To those wondering how this could be happening now when Ethiopa is such an incredibly old country that's been largely untouched by Europeans, you have to realize that for thousands of years, Ethiopia was just the regions of Amhara and Tigray. The Oromo, despite being the largest ethnic group in modern-day Ethiopia, were never even part of Ethiopia until the late 19th century when Menelik II basically quadrupled the size of the country.

Correction... the ethnic federal system had 9 ethnic based autonomous regions. The current govt is slowly working to make the ethnic federal system irrlevant by creating non ethnic based regions like "central Ethiopia region" etc from what used to be SNNPR. So what we have right now is an ethnic federal system that is slowly being weakened and made irrlevant.

They created the Sidama region, for one, an ethnic based zone. The new South Ethiopia Regional State holds a large chunk of the Wolaiyta people, a people numbering almost 6 million. And so on.

The problem with Ethiopia is that it used to essentially basically be Amhara, Tigray (and south Eritrea) for centuries. Similar to Medieval Europe they would war with each other, and sometimes unite to fight of Oromo, Somali, etc. Then, during the scramble of Africa, the historical Ethiopians gained munitions, and Ethiopia through conquest actually grew to cover its current borders. Like tripled in size. It has struggled ever since, first with evolving out of its feudal state (which favored an Orthodox Christian, Amharic-speaking identity), then dealing with a horrible communist regime and now with resurgent ethnic violence. It's a country that grew too large for its own good and is now having to deal with the baggage. It's similar to the Russian Empire -> Soviet Union -> .... Except Ethiopia in its current state has no dominant ethnicity, it's just a minority of various groups having to contend with a city-state like central structure in Addis Abeba.

Some countries are gonna be fine despite covid.. While thry are having massive protests rn, Kenya’s politival system has handled it moderately well, and they’ll probably grow into a super power eventually. Ghana is finally starting to rise again and get back to pre covid, and it seems inevitable it will become a developed regional power. The ivory Coast has actually made pretty remarkable progress since covid started, and while they’re currently going through issues because of a large drought, Botswana will liekly continue it’s slow pragmatic path to high income status, and Namibia is also definetely getting there, plus they found oil which will aid their development even quicker. Cape Verde’s also getting there. There’s a lot of other countries going in the right direction, like lesotho, but their path to prosperity will be long like Kenya’s. yahh , basically, things are improving for a lot pf countries, it’s just a lot less pretty than it was pre covid 🤷‍♀️

Fanos who are the guardian of Amhara people, are basically demanding constitutional reform that treats all citizens equally including Amharas. The current constitution make Ethiopians tribalist and creating ethnic conflict because the constitution gives land ownership to the tribe not to the individual owner.
