The Murugan Temple of Palani is one of the oldest temples in the world. No one knows when the temple was constructed. It is believed from the Tamil scriptures that Bogar, one of the 18 siddhars, devised the moolar (main idol) of Lord Karthikeya. He was born in South India around 3000 BC.
Generally all idols are sculptured using the granite stone. The granite stone has enormous strength and contains all natural elements of creation: earth, water, fire, air and ether. But the main idol in Palani is made out of an amalgam known as nava pâsanam. In Sanskrit the word nava has two meanings. Nava means both 'new' and also 'nine'. Similarly the word bhâsana also has two meanings. Bhâsana means 'poison' and may also mean 'mineral'. Bhogar anticipated the need to save people from the miseries of the world. In consultation with 17 other siddhars, the great sage devised a formula out of the "Nava Paashaanam" and began to build the Sacred Idol. The idol is made out of an extract that contains "Nava Paashanam"(Nine Poisons) which was made from a rare and invaluable mixture of the medicinal properties of 4498 Rare herbs. It is believed that this amalgam is a clever mixture of nine poisonous metals. By this amalgamation, the poisonous nature of all these metals was harnessed, hardened like granite and converted into a beneficial amalgam with medicinal and curative values. The idol for the presiding deity was subsequently carved out of this hardened amalgam.
