Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the B&W Companion gooseneck to 5th wheel trailer hitch adapter and we're gonna be checking it out and showing you how to install it on our 2022 GMC Sierra 2500. Now it's gonna be a great option for you if you've already got the setup for a gooseneck trailer. You've got that underbed kit and you tow a gooseneck trailer, but need the opportunity or the ability to also tow a 5th wheel. This is gonna be great because it utilizes the existing underbed kit from your gooseneck and allows you to just drop this whole assembly in place aside from the initial setup but it gets you that opportunity to tow it and do it really easily.
So you can choose between either one and it makes the whole process pretty simple. Let's check it out. Functionally, this is gonna be pretty much the exact same as the B&W Companion 5th wheel, so if you're familiar with that, you're gonna be familiar with this. It's got that 20,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's how much you can pull and the 5,000 pound vertical load limit.
Now keep in mind that's what the hitch itself is rated for not necessarily your truck. So be sure to check that and all the other components in your towing system to make sure that you're going by the lowest rated component and hauling safely. And under here, if you can see there is really what sets this apart is the hookup point. It drops into that same opening that our gooseneck ball would. We'll cover this more in the install and show you all the setup process but that's really where this is gonna differ is just that attachment point right there.
And to help make sure everything's extra secure we do have these long legs as the base and these long slats that drop into and fit the shape of the ribs of the bed here. Again, just to give it a strong base and keep everything nice and solid. Now up top we've got that dual jaw design which can be controlled with the handle on the outside pulling it out and back. Then our kingpin or our 5th wheel can hook up to it, we just back up at this point it would slot into place and re-secure it with the handle and the pin and clip to make sure that nothing's getting out. And with those dual jaws, we've got 360 degrees of contact around the king pin, plus the head is going to have a tilt back and forth, to one, maybe help hooking up if we're not perfectly aligned, but also to help absorb some road shock whenever we're driving any sort of chucking or back and forth movement that we experience going down the road, the hitch head is going to help absorb as we're driving.
With this, you do get a lot of points for adjustment both in the height and the front to back. For the height we've got three different height settings. We've got it in the lowest position right now just to show you what that would look like. Coming in at 16-1/4 inches from the bed to the top of the 5th wheel head. At the highest setting it's gonna be 18-1/4 of an inch. So with that in mind, just be sure to check your truck and trailer combination, see if one of those height settings is gonna be right for you. Now for the front and back you've got four inches of adjustment front to back. That's going to be done all during the initial install process as we're setting things up. So if you got a shorter bed truck and you need additional clearance from your cab to maybe have some sharper turns, you can get that just by setting it up in the initial install process. That being said if you find yourself needing more adjustment than that and you like this kit, there is an option for a slider base option that's going to be pretty much the exact same 5th wheel, but on a set of sliding rails. That's gonna get you even more turning clearance when you need it you can hop out, pull the handle, let the base slide back and get you a lot more up to 12 inches of additional turning clearance. So with that, if you've got a short bed truck or something like a tonneau cover like we have today that might be my recommendation. And with that kit it also just drops right into the gooseneck opening so you can make sure it's gonna work with your setup. What’s the torque value on the main bolt that you use for the block to be flush?
