I've had something similar happen to me recently where someone line-by-line copied my art exactly. the confusing part was that they drew the EXACT SAME OC that they copied from AND sent it to me as part of a trade. what's worse is that they made some awkward logical mistakes, such as copying the outline of the bottom jaw but drawing the mouth differently (original had the mouth open, but they drew the mouth closed so the lower jaw looked extremely out of place), and they were participating in an art-based discord server where the mods completely disregarded the OBVIOUS copying which was also visible in their other "art" x_x ridiculous how people let these things slide, especially when it comes from fellow artists I understand your uncomfort at the copied art not being traced outright, I'm just here to reassure you that yeah, it's happened to me too and it sucks, and you're allowed to feel upset about it
@saberraimu2 ай бұрын
I think with the pixel art one alone it'd be questionable to call tracing because there's only so much you can do in a 16 pixel square where you're limited to placing squares and maintaining a balance, and I've seen a ton of artists on Etsy and Twitter and in pixel art games draw pixel art cats and cups that way and shade the cup in a similar way already over the past 20-30 years, though their color choices may be a lil suspicious. Even I have drawn cat/animal faces/heads that way in pixel art and cups pretty much just like that over the last 20 years of doing pixel art and making badges/adoptables for my Geocities page decades ago lol. The frog emote situation added into the mix, however, makes it considerably more shady.
@bigdeuce662 ай бұрын
Anymore it seems like 3/4 of the designs being sold on Etsy are either AI generated or blatantly a copy of someone else's work. I used to be someone who would post every single new creation I did online across all my social media presences until I discovered several of my original designs being mass printed on t-shirts and sold from about 50 different online print on demand type shops. That was years ago and even still I regularly see my own work being sold by other people. For every shop I engage with that removes one of my designs, 10 more pop up. Because of this I no longer post 99% of my art online and I have transitioned into primarily creating things for private collectors or contract jobs. It's definitely a weird time we're living in.

This really reminds me of my dad’s work as a customs agent having to detect counterfeits being imported into the country… but inverted. The principle is the same. The design is almost identical but there is something wonky or off. The counterfeiters were trying to pass the fakes off as original. In your case they are trying to pass the work off as their own, but with as minimal change or effort as possible. Both instances of design theft have the same effect. It is so exhausting that this is happening even as AI has been wreaking havoc on artists’ livelihoods.

When I trace I only do it in the scetching phase - and then I trace over Pose References in Photo, 3D or Base Drawings. But in the following steps I alter stuff to make it my own and unique (clothing, colors, rendering, light source, etc.) f.e. some weeks ago I searched for a reference for a heavier pose to put together without any reference and wanted to make the first steps abit easier. I didn't find what I searched for - so I ended up with a folder of different poses, which I could tweak to make them work and combined stuff to something that worked with my vision. And while I trace I ALWAYS try to simplify the pose in easier shapes and try to LEARN how this pose works - so that I always work on my inner library and can use this knowledge in the future without a reference. Like that I think tracing is fine, because it is helping the process and raises the learning curve. But you should never trace or use heavy referencing for commercial goals.

To be fair pixel art is hard to be unique in especially if the canvas is the same small size. If 2 pixel artists make an icon of a barrel using the same canvas size more than likely the only way for them to look different would probably be thru coloring and shading😅 BUT with the buff frog emote and the fact that the fingers and highlight and the shape of the arm, very sus. Also going back to the pixel art, with the animal in a mug i dont think they could add paws because its waaay too small of a canvas for that small of a detail especially for a twitch emote

I honestly think that they're tracing but I think that they think if they change things it makes it okay. Tracing other artist's work for profit is NEVER okay! Tracing is a tool that I personally use in professional work all the time, but not other people's art! That's just stealing with extra steps. Even if they have changed some things, that doesn't make it okay. Honestly it's not even as good as the originals, cause they sometimes choose colors that are more washed out or make changes that make the drawing worse... There's a seller on etsy who I love the work of, starsalts, and there is another seller who basically....draws their designs again. Like just draw the whole pattern themselves and it's the same exact pattern same colors same poses for the pokemon. I HATE that store because they undersell them by like $5 and definitely use POD for theirs where starsalts has theirs ordered.

I don't think some of the people in this comment section understand how difficult it would be to accidentally copy an art piece almost exactly. Let's say my art group are all given the same character with the same single reference image and told to draw that, none of our art would look that similar. There's so many different stylistic choices people could add or even interpretations of the colors or patterns someone could make. Sure sometimes art styles of people who don't know each other can be similar due to similar inspirations, but if those style choices aren't consistent across multiple pieces then it's likely something suspicious is going on

The C shape handle is nothing special and cats in cups in cutesy small pixel styles are nothing new. The ear shape is different and the lineart in the "original" has shading as well whereas the "copy" does not. Also the cat in the "copy" seems to have an extra line of shading around the cat where it meets with the cup like a sort of bounce light.

Cus u can only work this much with pixel so i was wondering, if they had changed the animal to another animal, but the coloring and shading stays the same its a NG? I get it if the shading and color palette is the same its a NG, but color wise theres only so much colors to go from especially colors formt he same family palette, in this case, pastel colors, so i was wondering how far would it then be considered NG and how much its not? Just the outline only is a NG? Kat says as long as they add a lil pizazz of their own style, its fine, but the person already changed the animal to a different one and its still NG? JUST LEGIT A CURIOUS QUESTION. I just want to understand the boundaries for art better as there seems to be so many of them.

Like it fine if u are referencing the pixel art from shading to color picking. But as long as u change it up it should be fine. As long a as it not the same 1 to 1 pixel art it should be fine. Sorta say just change it up to make it your own instead of but coping the reference 1 to 1.

It wouldn't be impossible for two people to draw something that similar without even knowing the other exists. I do understand when it happens more than once like in this case, it's more unlikely and harder to believe. I agree they are surprisingly similar. Remember, tracing is fine if you do it for study and don't post your traced artwork, but what's happening here is not it! Never share, let alone sell traced artwork!

ive only traced on the back of color sheets in and google images on paper with ipads in 3rd grade

As I write this, I'm currently making my own animal crossing character. And I'm tracing the games Isabelle. Would that actually be tracing? Like in a bad way?

Honestly, there's just so many variations you can do with pixel art. As it was said, there's so many pixels you can go around with 32 pixel canvas.

Imagine stealing from an artist that WILL call you out like this 22 minute video, did you really think you would get away with this?

artwork?? 😭 as in 3 lines with another 3 strokes of shading + colour? how do people get mad for people copying effortless drawings... id understand if the piece was detailed, but seriously, the artists "traced" work looks better in general

The thumbnail is so funny! But seriously, it sucks that your art and other people's art got stolen and sold

imo i dont see this as tracing but pretty much heavy reference which is still wrong
@Sahota_cosmeticsАй бұрын
Using a reference is perfectly fine, but it’s horrible when it’s literally traced.

Tracing to practice and improve ur art and not posting it is fine but tracing posting it on eBay clamming it as ur own is whole different thing

these are heavily referenced, not traced. Still not ok to do, but ppl need to stop throwing the word "tracing" around

It was very obviously traced it was nearly 1 to 1.
@cheekily2 ай бұрын
@RinsDesk it wasn't. If you look at pixel art cups, there are a lot of cups that almost look alike. The cats pixels were also not 1:1. There's only so much you can do with pixel art. Heavily referenced? For sure. Traced? Doubt
