Also to get a cb on them I think you can use 1 IA to ask them to convert to catholic for religious unity. If they refuse you have a cb.

There is one big thing Red Hawk forgot to mention which makes this even easier. Before you stomp France into the ground you should check if Castille is also a Rival of them. If both Austria and Castille are Rivals of France and also allied and married, Castille will get an Habsburg heir via event if they have none. You can trigger this pretty reliably early on cause the Castille AI tends to disinherit Enrique. If they dont, just wait until he becomes King. He most likely wont have an heir. Just turn the message on if a ruler of a diferent nation dies. Its not a default setting but its so important if you play the PU game.

here is a tip for the bohemia war if you place your troops one province away from the bohemian border they will mothball the fort of Olomouc and if you attack them in the first day in a month with 31 days in it you can get a free fort from my experience this works in all of my Austria games edit: sorry for bad english

Austria is the one country that I found that I didn’t need manpower at all, being HRE after all, so I went with curtail noble privileges for the first time ever when I played it first. Tax also was a much more significant part of my economy for much longer than other major european countries that I played before, England, France, Holland and even Prussia can make much more from trade or production to warrant shifting focus away from tax, but Austria gets to that point later once you start integrating your unions and taking over the venice and ragusa trade nodes, so that extra 10% helped a lot. But i guess that game burgundy decided to be independent so I didn’t have access to the English channel, but I still never hurt for manpower, so the money was nice.

26:35 - Note at this time that you are missing an elector, to those watching, try to rectify that as soon as possible, as that's a harsh loss to Imperial Authority growth (until you pass the reform to always inherit), and you can always make the Pope an ally if you want to get the achievement for Papal Elector as the Emperor or Pope with HRE official religion as Catholic. Edit: Nvm he does notice (~28:00) and comment the exact same point lol.

When picking an elector prioritize the pope and then a country that you can vassalize (at least more then 150 likelihood they will accept before you make them an elector). You can mostly only do this with countries that you popped out that border you. You want to vassalize as many electors you can because as long as they are loyal they vote for you (I think there is another bonus you get from this, but I don't remember at the top of my head).

@@veryblocky I would even be wary of PU'ing electors unless you get ALL of them. You get a malus from all the other electors for doing so and if you happen to inherit them via the death of a ruler, the malus will still apply while your subjects don't exist anymore to vote for you. I lost the Emperor title as Lotharingia this way since I insta-annexed Austria (who was an elector), Bohemia, and another elector and lost the election after spending forever trying to play catch-up and fixing dumpster fires starting outside the HRE. To say I was angry was an understatement and I have never been so frustrated at what should be a good stroke of luck doubling my development for free in all my hours of playing.

Just a small tip that is a bit niche, but if a member of the empire leaves Catholic check if you can vassalize them. You can force religion then release them shortly after. This isn't available all the time, but is much more likely for released nations. I only mention this because there are not that many centers of reformation to deal with and this is a good way to save on some stab.

I just tried this out, and it doesn't work, sadly. Enforcing religion through vassalization converts the state religion of the faction, but not the actual religion of any provinces, so the center of reformation remains. Forcing religion through war actually converts the province, which destroys the center of reformation.

21:47 - One trick I use is to declare the war and then call in your allies immediately afterwards. Since the other countries didn't honor the original call their alliance will have been been cancelled.

Only do WC and One Faith if you are really comitted. Believe me the late game is extremely boring and with the HRE it is even less of a challenge than usual.

this tutorial was immensely helpful. I have found that, in 1.33, if you start building heavy ships while waiting for Hungry, I was able to get 3-4 pumped out consistently and it's enough to beat back Venice's navy, letting you take their capitol.

Block settlement growth button was fixed and it'll cancel colonist. You can feed your vassal swarm land and they'll not add provinces to TC as long as there is direct connection to their capital.

At the war u talk about with venice with the imperial ban cb, u said u didnt want to call in ur allies cus then venice allies would join, a way to work around that is to not call in ur allies on the declaring tab, but call ur allies in manually in their diplomacy tab after u have declared the war. Enemy allies will lose the alliance due to not answering the call, and ur allies will accept the manual call to war since they wanted to join in the first place. Just a little tip :)

Amazing Video. I have 3 questions (ABC) and 3 additional very good Strategies (123) not said so far: 1.) Ally Feeding before PU! Feed Nations you might get a PU later on while you are allied with them in a war (like Hungery, Burgundy, Milan, Whatever). You can save a lot of AE and Monarch Points, because it doesn't matter when you inhert them later. They take more when they have militaristic leaders. Feed Coratia the balkans, a bit of Venice and Hungary a bit of Ottomans or of Poland. Attack France or England with Burgundy, while France and England are in War against each other. I know it's a bit risky if you aren't lucky to get the instant PU and then have a truth before the force PU casus belli (I play a bit perfectionistic with saves backup management, so no troulbe for me). Try to catch Monuments for Diplo. Rep like Petra, Alhambra close by your place and if you expand far this Kanbawzathadi Palace later on. 2.) Take the capital of Venice quite early on in the first 5 years. Maybe fight before some Italien Nations to capture and steal some more ships to become strong enough or have a local ally with a fleet. But be carefule with AE because you also might force PU on Bohemia early on. 5 Reasons to take Venice: -The Venice Trade note is mainly controlled by it, maybe shift your trade capital there. -Venice has a cardinal. -It has already high devolopment and is close to the 30 Dev for the large City age bonus. -If you manage very ealry on to make it a state -> Renaissance could swarm here. Use a backup file for end of December verfore the renaissance fires, to let it swarm best or skip one year. -best: The doge palace improves government reform progress -> This also could mean for example more government capacity in the late game. 3.) Reattacks after Peace are fun You can reattack some nations immediatly after truth when they are weak like Venice, Marmelukes or Ottomans without stability hit while attacking garanted nations of them, new allies or new trade leage members. They won't be full war targets but you get get more out of them, while having a very easy war (But don't do it with Venice if you want to core it before the Renaissance). 3 more Questions I have: A) Is there a good way around Religous Ideas early on? I would love to take expansionist as second (Strenghenth diplo ideas you took before: extra Diplo slot and diploRep policy, joining colonial race with 2 colonists while dependend on buying/stealing maps, upgrading trade). The missionary strengh I could manage probably otherwise (national decissions, even revoke the restraint of appeals , inquisitors, monuments, defender of the faith, etc.). Would I miss some very important other mechanics? Do I still have the right casus bellies for changing the religions of other contries in the age of reformation? I am unsure how important also the Deus Vult is compared to other idea groups early on. B) Vasseling Byzantinum as Austria. Which way might be is better? Is it better to force vasselize before the ottomans attack them or to release them in a single provenice after the Ottomans ate them? First Option: Hagia Sophia doesn't get damaged from conquering and reconquering (Worth 3500 in Money), evt. Strategie 1.) can be done and feeding them andalusian non-cores before. Second Option: Looks liek more AE reduction by releasing instead of force vasseling, Ottomans might improve Development in Constantinopel, the Byzantinum Refugee Events comes to lower Tech costs. C) Why not Decentralized Bureaucrazy? the Video said there is no reason to take it. I would question here. My Answer: More matching great projects with more accepted cultures. One thing not covered here but still very useful when force converting hre nations, if they are free cities but allied to nations that are not, declaring war on one of their allies is also a very good way to do it. You can still force convert in a separate peace.

Good guide, I tried to follow it and it really explains what you should do. Unfortunately last time when everything was going well (I managed to get to 1480, PU's with Hungary, Bohemia and Milan and finished first war with Venice) until the Ottomans decided they'll declare on me, tried save scumming and allying some nations but it didn't help and Burgundy betrayed me every time. Well, maybe next time it will work, but thanks for the guide anyway

Something that needs to be stressed for the AEIOU achievement is that there needs to be at least 1 Protestant nation alive 30 years after it spawns. This is for the mission “A Holy Empire” where you need the Council of Trent to finish. In order for the Council of Trent to begin, the Papal States needs to see at least 1 Protestant nation (Anglican or Reformed does NOT count, has to be Protestant) 30 years after Protestant spawns, and 15 after Reformed spawned. If there’s no Protestant nations, the event won’t fire, and you’d be locked out of that mission, thus ruining your achievement run. It might be beneficial then, to keep 1 Protestant nation (by guaranteeing or vassalizing), so that the council of Trent can start, and then you can convert them. A very last resort if there are no Protestant nations, and doesn’t look like any will flip (OPM’s provence is Protestant) would be convert yourself, but make it a last resort, as you’ll lose emperorship until you flip back and the next election happens. Also from what I’ve read in a forum, if an OPM is Catholic, has a Protestant provence, and you are defender of the faith, you might need to lose it to have them flip, as they and their neighbors are no longer under your protection. Can’t confirm that, but it might be a solution to those who are desperate. Also people have said there’s a 1590 deadline, wiki doesn’t say anything about a deadline so I can’t confirm, but something to keep in mind, so in order to be the safest, make sure Protestantism spawns before 1540. It’s dumb it penalizes you for being good, but this is something you need to watch out for, and all the information I could find on this issue.

Tried playing Austria some time ago using your strategy. Already revoked privilegia by 1500s, Protestantism is no more in the Empire, for Voltaire’s nightmare, kicked the Ottomans out of Europe, and I managed to get 3 colonial nations (basically took France’s and Granada’s colony). I barely even needed to move my troops when at war.

If you are doing one faith, once you have the empire under control and have done most of the austria mission (including for sure the one with free missionary strength) form SP for even more missionary strength from the mission tree. Finally form Byzantium for massive missionary buffs. Provinces will convert insanely fast with tons of missionaries and you will be orthodox which is the best faith.

I enjoy your guides. You're a much better player than me. But I would like to offer some alternative. So my primary goal early game is to get Naples as a PU. The mission to get Naples is pretty far down the Hungary mission tree. So this is how I do it as fast as possible. 1. PU Bohemia (duh!) 2. Immediately declare on Hungary. Enforce union while severing Croatia. 3. Pass first reform or declare on Milan PU (whichever comes first). 4. Attack Venice with Imperial Liberation (preferably) or Milan reconquest. This is how I avoid coalition: instead of taking land, I give Milan their cores back and then I release Verona, Padua and Aquilia. You can immediately diplo-vassalize all 3 of them. The only AE is from returning Milanese cores if under PU. Very minimal. 4. Annex Croatia after truce expires. 5. Immediately build 5 heavies. 6. Annex Treviso and Venice after truce. By this point, you should have mission to complete the PU of Naples. If done correctly it should only be about 1475 - 80. The only thing hanging is whether you want to make Naples stronger/Aragon weaker. If you're up for a challenge, wait for Aragon to declare on Naples after release. Aragon declares almost every single time within first year of release in 1.32. Immediately ally Naples and defend your new ally. If you don't want to bother with this, just immediately ally Naples as soon as they're independent. I recommend option 1 because Naples without Sicily is kind of weak and there is a good chance they'll get ganked by the Spaniards while you're waiting for the truce to end. Thanks, Red Hawk. You dont want to take last of upper reforms until you deal with reformation. Because otherwise you will not be able to declare war on heretical princes. Also when you are going to pass revoke privilegia reform you should wait for 100 authority. It will make princes more likely to submit to you.

Idk if you need to revoke free City status, I've found you can usually just attack an Ally of theirs and just rush them down, peace them out and force convert. If they're an OPM you'll always have the warscore to do it, even if they aren't cobelligerated.

Btw the length of a truce is decided by the warscore cost of your peace deal (basically 10 points is 1 year) so when taking money you can take up to x+9 without extending the truce any further

You should try a similar run with Saxony, they’re one of the best candidates for emperor apart from Austria. I expanded authority by releasing a bunch of franconian/Hanoverian/Swabian/Czech minors and got an early Voltaire’s Nightmare achievement. You also get the PU over PLC as a bonus. I also find them easier to counter the reformation with given their more central position

I did an AEIOU game recently and that expand empire CB can be used to turbo pass reforms. I forced the balkans, France, England, Eastern Europe, and Iberia into the empire and by 1550 I had revoked.

What is your opinion on moving your capital to the netherlands after you inherited burgundy. to surpress the rebellion and you propably wanna collect in the channel anyway... however since you wont conquer colonial areas or be able to pick trade ideas you will be short on traders, where do you place them ? venice, channel and vienna ?

My advice to deal with centres of reformation in large nations: 1) Ally/vassalize a small "proxy" nation that could core the centre. 2) Give proxy the centre in a war, and ONLY the centre if possible. 3) Break alliance/subject with the proxy, either diplomatically or in a peace deal. 4) Declare war on the proxy and take all provinces EXCEPT the centre; give those to other HRE allies in the peace, or take them for yourself. 5a) If the proxy flipped to non-catholic, and you have leftover warscore, you can demand conversion now. You should destroy the centre because it is the new capital of the proxy. 5b) Otherwise, you should now have an OPM proxy with the centre of reformation as its capital, and it will likely flip religion now that it hates you. One more war will destroy the centre.

Good thing is to ally poland if they are rivaled by/rivaling bohemia then curry favors while improving with electors or you can just promise land and ofc give nothing

I tried to emulate this playthrough for what is basically my first solo game where I play in Europe, and of course charles of burgundy dies before his father, disabling the burgundian inheritance, I am at least allied with them though, and they are a great power. I am also allied with a great power castille that now has a habsburg as an heir, though the current queen doesn't seem to want to die. It's a fun play style though trying to PU and be diplomatic.

I was so lucky in my Bohemia war, not a single battle to fight. Then Brandenburg gets early Neumark event and I was locked out of the Imperial Ascendancy branch. Moldavia even chose Hungary and Poland took their usual Jagellion, but that ruined it.

Unrelated, but I played as Spain one time, got the Hapsburg marriage to try and inherit the lowlands from burgundy through Austria, *AND THEN I GOT AUSTRIA UNDER A PERSONAL UNION AFTER THEY HAD ANNEXED HUNGARY AND BOHEMIA* and i never even got the lowlands, they never lost their heirs

Is it worthwhile after the privilege has been revoked to add provinces to the hre after coring them and then release them as vassals to get a larger vassal swarm? Or should i just force people into the hre without going through the hassle of coring them and making them a subject. Otherwise, i could just directly take land but that sounds like pain.

I forced the religion of a nation with a center of reformation and got rid of it but then another one appeared in a different nation that had already swapped to protestentism, does that trick still work or has it been patched out? (there were only two centers when I forced religion so that could be it I just wanted to check)

The center of reformation disappears even if its not on the capital? For example, if it spawns in luneberg but not in its capita, and you force religion, that would only convert automatically its capital, not the rest. Woudl that make the COR disappear?
