My problem in my WC attemps always end up me being too fast and then there being too many rebels because i ate too many provinces and at that point I'm mostly not interested anymore in finishing the wc and just quitting and playing a new save. As far as I searched in the wiki, there is an event with tech 12 condition that allows you to change from early serfdom to either enforced/increased serfdom or straight to peasant freeedom. However the MTTH is 1200 months or sth

ok so I re did the search, the MTTH is 450 months, quite big, and minimum tech 12. and then again at tech 17 there will be events regarding serdom or peasent liberation. Anyway, I still advocate for taking early serfdom, since it grants quite a lot of benefits

Ngl I wouldnt even think about no cbing Byzantium as muscovy. Its an extremely valid strategy for a lot of countries and Byzantium is probably the single best Vassal you could ever have but Moscovy has alot to worry about. Moscovy TECHNICALLY needs to take out the ottomans early but I wouldn’t think that they needed them bad enough to take on Byzantium. I also assumed not fitting Novgorod immediately ment the danes would since they pretty much always attack right after the moscovy ai, but I didn’t realize how crippled Novgorod actually got. Sometimes Novgorod gets so weak Tver is actually able to annex provinces from them meaning you only need 2 wars to annex novgorod vs 3.

Yeah, I only started that Byzantium strategy recently, after my first successful world conquest. In that game I vassalised Byz, Granada, and an a Irish minor - all as Russia before attacking Novgorod. I actually see Novgorod survive well into mid-game lately, looks like they’re now more successful allying Poland and Lithuania.

Thanks for the sub! To your questions: - The Burgundian lands are wrong culture & wrong religion for me, and I really struggled with the governing capacity in the early game. So it made sense to me, but it’s not a must. - The upgraded Espionage is actually a solid idea group now, for the first half of the game at least. I routinely take it as the first idea set and then drop it late game for something more relevant.

Good point - I didn’t mention it in the video, but the Emperor (Bohemia) did declare on me for the Lowlands. It was a super easy war though, Burgundy occupied one of their forts and I peaced out for money.

Hehe... many of these things is what I have done as well. No-CB Byzantium to vassalize, but I also no-CB Granada to be able to reach into colonies, and get the awesome Alhambra monument. I try to get the Catholic rebels to convert to Catholic early (from Livonia), so I can get elected HRE emperor, and then do it all back to Orthodox once I pass the Religious equality reform in HRE... All of it is a huge pain in the butt, but fun :)

Good guide, but i gotta say you missed one thing with the serfdom vs freedom, those early buffs are going to carry you much better than the institution spread till tech ten, and then from tech twelve onward you get a ticking chance to instantly swap from serfdom to the second tier peasant liberation, going straight from -.5 to +.75, and then actually giving you the buffs you want, while this event may take a little bit to actually get if unlucky, the benefits that serfdom gets has been very helpful for starting as moscovy since their starting position is not nearly as strong as it felt int he past. after this event you can rapidly turn modernization up and youve only lost 2 tech tiers of time, which i usually use to reduce the other privileges down anyways as i prepare for absolutism, which i think is a good mechanic to let less experienced players start pulling back the buffs like they should

@@StrategySphere no problem, i see nothing wrong with what you did, as any experienced player will be fine without the early serfdom buff, and for you I don’t know how long it took for your swap even to fire that gave you the upgraded version, but I had a game where it happened right after tech twelve, and another where it too till much later, so there is risk in screwing over any modernization if you risk it, but early on losing manpower for no real gain is suicidal for almost any other person especially with a start like Muscovy and the nonstop wars you must fight to survive, if anything, I would suggest not even taking freedom at that point until you form Russia just to avoid the early setback

Ivan the Terrible's name ISN'T actually poorly translated. Terrible meaning extremely bad is a case of English having added meaning to it...primarily because English ended up having two nearly identical words with very similar meanings, that other word being Terrific. Both words were used to describe things as being of great or extraordinary magnitude. This is why when you go and read some 19th century written by stuffed up British aristocrats from the 19th and early 20th century, you can see both terrible and terrific used to describe the same sort of actions. They might describe moving very fast as moving with most terrible speed OR with most terrific speed. Or even use both. For whatever reason, English authors ended up developing a convention of primarily using terrible to refer to things that the story viewpoint considered bad while using terrific to refer to things the story viewpoint considered good. Because the people who wrote textbooks and dictionaries tended to be rich White Guys of Anglo-French ancestry, aka the same exact group of people who was writing and reading most these novels, this convention was then defined as being the "proper" way of using the words. Meanwhile, Ivan the Terrible's name was originally translated BEFORE this convention arose. So to someone of the time when it was first translated, they would have immediately understood that it was saying that Ivan was Great. The Second thing that happened to Ivan was that History marched on and stopped being so apologetic to the Tsars and with it Ivan. Ivan ordered the Massacre of Novogrod, where he had thousands of people in the city of Novograd murdered for the crime of simply being in a city that he thought that some of the nobles in said city were traitors. He later murdered his eldest son in a fit of anger. This would lead to his succesor being Feodor Ivanovich, who was both very bad at ruling and died childless, meaning the Times of Troubles can be directly blamed on Ivan the Terrible. He also is responsible for vastly increasing the level of autocratic rule the Tsars had, which Russia STILL has yet to recover from the damage to Russian Society of the Tsars doing so. By modern standards, He absolutely is someone who should be filed under the modern definition of Terrible. Much of Modern Russia's problems have roots in people like Ivan the Terrible and their actions.

Hi! Yes, it’s absolutely viable without PUs. To prove that, I’ve done world conquests as pirate Gotland and Holy Horde Teutons, they can’t PU. Can’t comment on Innovative because I’ve never taken it once in my 7k hours, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be valid. It could be a good idea to release more nations, but I just didn’t see the need. I was on time for my conquest. Great questions!

Hi, I opened my old save file to check. It appears they fell under the Poland PU and gave me the access, because they stopped rivaling me. I didn’t rival Poland until much later, and I was rivaled only by Denmark and Novgorod at the time. Poland actually had a positive opinion of me due to the “enemy of the enemy” modifier (Denmark being the common enemy). That was my set up. I did this opening 3-5 times and it always worked for me.

@@StrategySphere My workaround to replace your strategy was to restart the campaign lots of times until I managed to to start a war with Lithuania (no alliance with Poland) on the 11th of December using the estate mission. Conquered a path to Moldova. Messy, but it was the best I could pull of :p

I played on 1.35.3 as Novgorod, and the modernization tooltip is still bugged. However, it does grant modernization if your advisor is Germanic culture only. Im not sure about Walloon, but when I had 3 muslim Turkic advisor they didnt give me any modernization as well

...pushing into the east first is also a valid option. A bit easier imo since Coalition control is much easier and due to what i explain below Conquering all the trade to feed it towards Novgorod, and then collecting in Constantinople as well later on. Also, even though military hegemon got nerfed... its still better for a WC than economic. You dont even need to adapt the "take their forts so you dont need to siege them" strategy because you get a total of 80% siege ability with a spy network. Additional -10% warscore cost, meanwhile economic does basically nothing for you past 1700 Lastly, a next level strategy from Budgetmonk is to delete all states and culture switch to large culture groups for the "Nationalism" cb. Imperialism is good, Nationalism is better. It allows you to basically full annex Iberia in a single war - another reason why i think going for the east first is better, you can just end the european nations in 2 wars each later on. Since they are your culture you also dont have to care about overextension, you core in 6 months with -65% ccr which means even with 2.000% overextension you cant get rebels as they can only tick up to 60% till the stuff is cored and the unrest is gone. (you still get them in the conquered provinces, i meant everywhere else) If you go for this strat you might need economic hegemon if you arent a good player to keep a high enough manpower pool - since everything is gonna turn into a territory. In my case i spammed regiment centers everywhere to get the 1.000 forcelimit and i was able to play with roughly 700k max manpower pool, was just enough to play.

This is brilliant advice! Good point on the military hegemon, I lost interest in it after the debuff but it could still be valid. I actually tried the nationalism strategy (Siu-King introduced it many years ago) but really struggled with manpower and income. You really have to be good to go for it :)

@@StrategySphere I can't get the Ottomans war to go right. I'm not sure if it's a timing thing on if i finish my sieges too quickly the Ottos don't declare on Byzantium or what. Also, the Ottos seem to keep all of their armies together which makes it difficult to pick them off. When I accepted my peace deal with byzantium, I has all my troops in constantiople so that I could quickly siege down their capital. Not sure if that changers things.

Ahh I see! Two points: - If you could finish the war against Byzantium before the Ottomans declare on them, I would consider it a success. I fought the Ottos out of necessity because they declared fast. - It’s difficult to win an early war against the Ottos. The key is to make them break up their armies and fight them on your forts. I’d try to bait them to siege Constantinople and attack them there. It may be necessary to take more loans and hire more mercenaries… Overall, the no-CB on Byzantium is a relatively advanced strategy. In my Gotland game for example, I had no way to win against the Ottos so I waited for them to peace out Byzantium before signing my own peace with Byzantium.

How the heck did u beat the Ottomans in the defensive war after vassilizing byzantinum. I had a 4/3/0/1 leader the grand army and a fullsize tech3 army and was fighting defensive on mountains terrian and got a 5% disci adivor - there is absolutely no chance - i alt-f4 for like 20 times, even with really good roll streaks there is absolutly no chance to win that fight against a

Not sure why this would be sketchy - it’s my usual opening as Muscovy, I did this at least 5-7 times. You may need to hire some mercenaries and ensure that your vassal armies attach to yours. You may have seen that I’ve hired the Grand Army merc to make sure I have more troops than the Ottos. It’s a classic, mainstream war. Ottomans are very strong early on though, so it’s by no means an easy war - but doable.

very good video! but i cant play eu4 in late/end game and try my WC like this or with France due to low fps (3 or 4fps). a month needs about 10 minute to play in war -.- and my pc is high end

You recommend not taking early serfdom, but it's dead easy to swith out of it through the events before modernization even becomes a mechanic, no? You basically flip back and forth between the two reforms! At certain points. haha. I think it's worth it for the early bonuses.

I tried this start with a No-CB war against Byzantium a couple of times and I find that it just does not work. Invariably, both Novgorod and Lithuania rival you, so you are boxed in and hope for some other war participant to ask Lithuania for access. By that time, Otto has already declared their own war. Or worse, both Venice and Otto declare on Byzantium before you can vassalize them, making it impossible for you to move in the European parts due to their forts. Going straight for Novgorod is the more viable strategy.

Each game is of course different, which is why EU4 is great for replayability. It offers almost endless scenario combinations. Attacking Novgorod and building your power base around the northern trade centers is a great strategy. I would still attack the Ottomans reasonably fast, before they grow out of control.

@@StrategySphere Oh of course, the sooner you give Otto a good kick, the better. Although as Russia you have also a potentially powerful Poland/PLC or Timurids to deal with. If the AI manages to keep Timurid vassals loyal they pack quite a punch.

@@T42nk I agree on the Timmies, they can pack a punch. In my current game they formed Persia (and one of their ex-vassals formed Mughals), quite a challenge. Poland-Lithuania tends to be passive early, in my humble experience. Although if left alone, they’ll grow into a monster :)

Do you still retain streltsy after Russian empire? This patch streltsy is quite broken. As long as you have above 1k manpower and money you can just consolidate existing ones and keep on Fighting. I just spamed them and eventually out lasted ottomans.

You do retain them, unless you go revolutionary. If you take the “new order regiments” gov reform, your troops can get up to +25% combat ability every time you press the streltsy button, so yep - they’re great!

Hey, nope - can’t be done directly, as far as I know. The only way I’ve found is to deliberately lose those provinces to an enemy and then conquer them back for yourself.

Hmm, I looked at this time stamp but didn't see any gold mines. Maybe it's how the graphic mod shows provinces? EDIT: Ohh, I see what you mean! I believe it's one of the Russian missions which increases the chance of getting a gold mine in Siberia. I didn't even pay attention, lol.

If you don't take Novgorod (province ) in first war vs Novgorod you can full annex them in two wars .If you do take Novgorod then they will move capital and essentially you paying the extra cost for two capitals.Tbf useless advice the way u paced the campaign

@@StrategySphere The only thing i haven't tested is if you don't take Arhangelsk (Kholmogory) in the first war then Novgorod can take mission where they build marketplace there and get 6 dev, that could push you over the limit. But if u take Kholmogory you can annex in two wars 100%.
