It's probably over 25000, but it is very difficult to count exactly. What is the definition of an island? And some authorities in the area are not clear about this. For this example I'm going to use the country of Indonesia: in 1996, Indonesia just said "we're not going to count all this, but we claim Indonesia consists out of 17508 islands". But other sources claim anywhere between 13000 and 18000. And I suppose this number varies just as well with all the other countries in the region, and the region as a whole.

as japan i pretty much only ever do island only conquest. Mostly because i find the idea of japan onthe mainland disgusting. though usually I'm fine with vassalizing Korea and Malacca for dat sweet sweet trade (and staging ground for inevitable wars with Ming), but I'll "make it up" to them by heavily developing their lands as recompense. Usually I only consider my job finished if I've go the entirety of the Pacific and Indian oceans, which yes means i have a significant African colony in the form of Madagascar XD

Around the 8 minute mark you said "I don't actually know if I can vassalize Brunei". Click on one of their provinces and right of the Manpower/Supply limit/Sailors there's crossed sword with a star on it and below it some percentage number, that's the warscore cost for that particular province and if you hover over it it will show you the cost for all their provinces combined. If that number is below 100 you can vassalize the country.

I don't think Australia counts as an actual island in eu4, i think there's a tooltip in debug mode which will showcase exactly what is considered and island and Australia doesn't count.

I'm pretty sure what the game considers as "islands" are islands that are only one province. Like Christmas Island. It's so that institutions can't spawn on them, so they can spread.

@@tylermech66 well if you look closely, Venice is more than 1 island :P It also has a crossing so it doesn't really count that. Kind of like how the Hebrides are a bunch of islands but don't count in the institution check so they can still spawn institutions.

@@Quarbit Ah, gonna keep that crossing fact in mind for the future (always wondered how Venice could spawn institutions, I'll guess it is that only fully separated singular island provinces cannot spawn institutions). Still, it's a very simple indicator in the game. Simply turn on debug mode and there'll be an island label in the tool tip when you cover over a province, which will either be "island=yes" or "island=no"
