If the United States has aided and abetted Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing in Gaza, the European Union’s role has been one of quiet complicity.
In a special edition of The Listening Post, we examine the discourse around the conflict in three EU countries: Germany, where shows of support for the Palestinians have been heavily suppressed; France, where television news channels have distorted the debate to suit their own agendas; and the outlier that is Ireland, where there has been probing criticism of Israel’s actions - from politicians and in the media.

I'm Irish living in Italy. The support for the ordinary Palestinian people is huge and rightly so. A lot of people, like myself have been educated and discovered what is happening in Palestine, not just from October 7 but the pain and suffering, all along! So regardless what our governments say or the media, I will continue to listen to and believe those brave individuals on Instagram and Tiktok, the ordinary Palestinians recording their pain and suffering. What is happening there is ethnic cleansing, it is genocide. I just wish I could do something, but all I can write is I hear you, I see you and I'm so very sorry.

I have closely followed the German news media, and I was really shocked by their one-sidedness and obvious cencorship. Even progressive groups called for rallies to support Israel, writing "never again antisemitism". As a descendant of a former Dutch colony, Suriname, I see a lot of parallels with the Palestinian fight for freedom as my ancestors had in Suriname. I think a lot of descendants of the colonies of European countries identify much more with the Palestinians. This is not necessarily recognized by media producers, because those are mostly older white men. I think in the coming years we will see European media shifting. It’s deeply disturbing to see what’s happening in Germany. Many of my friends are feeling increasingly uncomfortable living there. I left already years ago. I find it disgusting that the government cares more about their image and doesn’t really do any effective things in terms of fighting antisemitism inside their government, police, ministries etc. It’s shocking and leaves me feeling disgusted. I’ll wear the Kuffiyeh for sure when I’m there to visit

So glad my country is an outlier !! As an Republican from Northern Ireland whose birth record declares me British I share the refusal of the people of Palestine to be mastered. Thankfully in Northern Ireland that refusal is a right, but it is one that had to be fought for and sadly that fight involved atrocities against innocents. Those atrocities cannot be forgotten or justified but the wider context is one of illegal occupation, and the rights of the oppressed to fight occupation is one that should be supported !!

The 1862 Dakota uprising saw white settlers remove the Natives from their land, so the Dakota attacked the invaders..resulting in 38 Natives being hung by the US government. In 2019 the Dakota received a formal apology (for what little that was worth).

If you are really in favor of human rights, truth, freedom for all then you cannot stand by Gaza. You must be on Israel's side. It is the only democracy in the Middle East that does not follow Sharia law. Women are not beaten, homosexuals are not executed, there is an attempt at equality (there are also Arabs, Druze, Bedouins and Christians who live with dignity as citizens). This is not something that can be said about Iran (homosexuals are executed by hanging) or Turkey (a homosexual journalist was beheaded) or even Gaza, where buildings are thrown or dragged with a car and run over. And Israel is not an apartheid state, Gaza has been free since 2005, they simply chose to remain refugees. The sad thing is that 80% are helped with work and medical care from Israel, there is no reason to give aid to the enemy and Israel still helps. Not Egypt. To a lesser extent the East Bank was helped by Israel and now many are left without work. After all, in Jordan and the girls who share a border, they will not receive food and electricity and medical assistance. Being Palestinian is screwed because the terrorists control them. Hamas is a corporation of billions. Not millions - a billion!!! The Palestinians elect a government that kills them. If anyone should stand trial, it is the Hamas government, which did not evacuate and even killed those who tried to evacuate the area, not Israel. Anyone who cannot see this and refuses to acknowledge this very, very simple truth is a stupid little anti-Semite. The mountains of Syria, Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen - millions of Arabs and children were killed. Israel defends itself and suddenly the anti-Semitic misery rears its head.
