@@dawg1510 That points to underlaying health-problems. She also said he suffers from allergies etc , so he needs proper food-changes and medication if it's really severe. Not a shave...certainly not the topcoat, since it's their natural protection against heat and cold .

I have a german shepherd. What the hell is this owner thinking? These dogs are not meant to be shaved. A good brush out would have been plenty. But shaving this dog made me sick. I brush my dog daily if not several times a day during late summer just to get the shed out. It comes down to researching the breed before hand to see if you can handle the amount of time and effort it takes to take care of them. Dont get a breed you dont have time for or cannot spend the time or expense making sure they are happy and healthy. Shepherds are alot of work but well worth it!! Beautiful ,loyal, smart and very protective.

shouldn't be shaved at all! A long haired shep has a protective topcoat which have oils that protect te dog's skin and is also a great insulation. He'll most likely suffer more now from the heat then before.

Many people unfortunately shave their long haired German cheepers, because long hair is often then not regenerated as a pure bred German cheeped. I was at my dog 2020 in Sweden and talked to the GC people and they told me this. Idk if it’s the same in America.

I mean it wasn't really the owners fault. When they said "summer cut" they were probably thinking a little bit cut off, but you could tell by the owners reactions when the groomer first started cutting, she didn't want it that short.

I've been in GSDs and professionally grooming for over 40 years....this is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone can call themselves a groomer. This dog wasn't matted. That's impacted undercoat. Could have been blown out pretty easily. I can't even watch the whole thing...

Yougirl Kperry Did you read a word he/she wrote?? Double coats keep a dog COOL in the summer. Who cares where you live, the dog will always be COOLER with the double coat. Now this poor dog has no way to keep cool, or protect himself from the harsh sun. This will cause him to get even more hot, get sunburned, and possibly heat stroke. I question why people get dogs without researching the breed first. It’s just ignorance. Don’t get an animal if you’re too lazy to do research first, and don’t groom an animal if you’re uneducated.

Summer cuts are a damn scam. Double coated dogs should NEVER be shaved, and their coats keep their skin protected and cool. As a self-proclaimed 'professional', you SHOULD know this.

any knowledgeable Houston, Tx Vet will probably tell you that it's an exception to shave a GSD if you live in a very hot and humid area. I was advised to get mine shaved down a bit during this time of year because the heat and humidity is so bad. He's noticeably much cooler and can play longer outdoors in the sun without overheating and getting too overexerted.

Dede (the groomer) is educated on dogs. The owner is not. Dede knows shaving a double coated dog is bad but she does what the owner want. If the owner wants their dog to be shaved, she'll do it. Don't blame the ignorance on Dede.

Marla Baldwin I'm not entirely sure if long haired Chihuahuas are double coated, I think you'd have to look into the specifics with your vet since double coats can happen in both longer coated breeds and shorter coated breeds. Double coat means there is a more dense, softer coat underneath the first layer of fur. The top layer of fur allows for protection against sun and parasites that is vital to the dog's health, and the bottom layer is used to help regulate heat and cooling. Shaving a double coated dog causes them to lose both protection against the outside elements AND causes the fur to stop regulating heat, which means they will be more hot in the summer and more cold in the winter. One shave can also ruin a double coat from growing back properly, which means that it will become extremely difficult to brush through and may never have the qualities of a double coat again. It can be very stressful for both the dog and you. I don't exactly know why she keeps shaving double coated dogs, as she's had comments telling her not to do that before and she's continued regardless, but it is troubling. Most groomers are taught not to shave their double coated dogs because of these issues, but either she doesn't care or she doesn't take the time to read through comments. She does live in Texas, so it is entirely possible that she just thinks that shaving the dog is the only way to keep them cool from the heat, but in that process it will cause them to become even more hot and encourage others to do the same to their dog and that's not great. I understand that with mats it's sometimes necessary, but considering the consequences I feel that every other method should be tried first and the entire fur shouldn't be shaved off....it's just not good.

Double coated dogs like these shepherds, huskies and malamutes, who are designed to handle the weather, should NEVER be shaved! If the fur gets matted, then it's the owner's fault for letting it get that way, and you just cut out the mats, not the whole damn coat! A long haired chi does not have a double coat, so you can shave all you want. The double coats have the fine coat underneath which is designed to keep them warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. It also helps protect from the sun. When you shave it, you take away the natural cooling and make the heat even worse for the dog. It can also do permanent damage to their coat, so it won't grow back in the same way or as thick as it needs to be, which again will hurt the dog come winter time. Just leave the coats alone, buy them a kiddie pool and stop sticking them outside in the heat! People who live in the desert or hot climates should think about these things before getting a dog that isn't meant for such climates!

A "summer cut" doesn't always mean a shave down. For some people it might only be a 1 comb or even longer. Should always ask just how much the owner wants off. At the place I work we ask do they want half off, more than half, or less than half. Works pretty well.

A summer cut to me means the same groom they got in the summer months. Some of the regulars who maintain their long coat will get a summer cut that's literally one or two blades shorter lmao. There should have been so much more clarification especially considering we're talking about shaving down a double coated dog...

It is ALWAYS the groomers responsibility to figure out what a customer wants. 99% of owners don't know shit about grooming. So it's the groomers responsibility to figure out what to do. That's why at the shop I work at we figure it out by asking half off, less than half, or more than half. Then we figure out things from there.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe what I just saw. I was born and raised in Germany and have never seen a German Shephard, long or short hair get his hair chopped off. That dog looked happy in the very beginning, but after that it went downhill and at the end he was looking so very sad. Any groomer worth his salt could see that the customer is not educated on grooming of her dog. Groomer should have advised that this dog has a 2 layer coat and has the correct coat for all seasons. Educate the customer on how to correctly take care of the dogs hair, instead of chopping the dogs hair as the groomer did. There was not one smooth cut on that whole dog, everything was chopped to pieces. Save yourself that long tirade at the end about training and take a course on properly grooming the different breeds of dogs.

I am so disappointed as well😥I have a german Sheperd and I live in Puerto Rico here the warm weather is much worse then there.. And I would never do that to my dog. ..i would put a pool or something jeep him fresh and of course some ice.. But never shave a beautiful hair dog. Poor baby. Owner needs some orientation...

That wasn’t matted and it wouldn’t have been painful for the dog to remove with normal at home grooming. The same thing would happen to my German Shepherd when I got lazy with brushing him out or it was time for him to blow his coat his younger brother not so much. It’s just time consuming and you have to take it slow and give them breaks if they’re young and not use to the routine yet but obviously read your dog because those smartass dogs can be manipulative. I’ve never felt the need to shave my boys down ever and I lived in El Paso, TX with them for four years (up to 110 degree summers) and my thicker coated boy would beg to go out and play during the hotter parts of the day. People need to educate themselves about the breeds they own and learn how to really read their dog.

A good bath with a deshedding shampoo. Force blow while you brush & comb. Blow out all that dead undercoat. Brush & comb down to the skin. Force blow dry really helps. Rest just takes time & effort.

Poor dog. You never cut the hair of a GSD. The hair protects them from the sun. Who does this? The matting is the owners fault. Try brushing your dog and deshedding for the summer months. I live in a hot and humid area and I never shave my GSD. OMG! I'm horrified!

I groomed for over 20 years on and off and i agree with you. As we progressed in life and stopped pandering to the owners demands we actually started to tell them to come back for multiple sessions. If the dog was real bad. Also grooming devices help a lot. Also its amazing how often during shedding the coat will naturally sort itself out. They look atrocious one minute and fine the next.

Ive watched two videos of this woman grooming dogs and I honestly think she’s rude and she doesn’t even seem like she likes dogs. I have NEVER seen this breed of dog cut this short and I don’t know why the groomer would do that, and it obviously wasn’t what the owner had in mind, so they should have had a discussion about it before. Honestly I feel sorry for the dog. And the groomer is not a person I would ever take my dog to. Not in a million years.

Dog groomers are like this, I trained with one for a while who was so disciplinarian/authoritative natured to the dogs using a stern voice and sharp abrupt movements but she said you need to be this way or the dogs wont do as their told when grooming.

As someone who works in a vet clinic and has a double coated dog myself this is disgusting. NEVER ever shave down a double coated dog. If you’re worried about the animal overheating then you can get them a pool, put ice cubes in their water and brush out their undercoat so they can get correct air circulation. I’ve seen matted dogs, I’ve shaved mats out of dogs and none of those were mats 🙄😒

He doesn't like doggy pools, he just drinks from them, I've tried lots of options but even so he drastically overheats in this weather, after being advised to get him shaved down a little bit, he has been much cooler and can play longer outside without overheating so much too quickly.

If I were the breeder, I would have a heart attack. A ruined coat for life. It is so weird to go for a Plush coated shepherd or long coat and shave them down. Why not get a short coated breed. The long coat protects them from the sun. I love this groomer, but not this job.

You are completely entitled to your own opinion , name calling only shows your maturity level. If you actually watched the video to the end, Dede pointed out quite a few of my concerns with the way the dog was being handled. Dede even called her out over the ant thing, you could tell she wasn't going to do anything about it. The dog is/was not put first, the dog just exists with no type of structure. It looks like the lady would rather medicate the dog to the point where its lethargic vs actually working with the dog. The dog wasn't even 2yrs yet and even Dede thought she was a senior dog, something is not right there!

This is a tough watch. I like Dede she does some great work with aggressive dogs but this is a car crash! This poor animal not yet 2 but barely able to stand, the fact Dee clearly misinterpreted what the owner wanted, the shaving of a double coated breed without explaining why it is not advisable, the muzzling of a dog that didn't need it, the fact the groomer then tries to blame the shave on non exsistant matts (most of the impacted hair would have blown out and any actual matts could have been spot removed with the clippers) This groom is nothing to be proud of :(

How can you shave a German Shepherd? They sweat entirely over their tong and maybe paws. Now that poor dog is without protection against sun and can now be easily attacked by ticks, and the skin can get easily cut. We had nordic dogs which had much more fur than a German shepherd and we never ever shaved them like that. Also here in Europe it can get pretty hot in Summer.

Ok I’m sorry but people are stupid, no groomer should agree to shave down a double coated breed unless absolutely necessary cause of matting, which this dog wasn’t, a summer hair cut only makes the dog hotter and more susceptible to sunburn, the double coat acts as an insulator and keeps the dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter

I’m a groomer and we shave dogs like golden’s and labs even though we really don’t want to. So many people want their dogs which double coated fur shaved down because they think it reduces shedding. Before we shave a breed like this down we tell them the potential consequences but we never say no because they’ll just go somewhere else and get it done anyway

I usually really push my clients to not get a shave down. Usually they can be convinced to do a comb cut. I tell them to try a comb cut and if they don't like it I'll do the shave down next time. And I tell them about all the risks even for that. I've never had to fully shave a double coated dog. And anyone who wanted a shave initially could be convinced to do the comb cut as a middle ground. I've had to spot shave the but area or Matt's in the belly on some Golden's but otherwise I've not had issues

Okay, the is no such thing as a "european" german shepherd as a separate breed. When someone states that the dog is European they are meaning the bloodlines. It's an absolute travesty to have an owner shave a German shepherd.

Areyousaying idontknowmyname Good breeders will absolutely do all the necessary genetic testing one the dam and sire before they have a litter. Unfortunately, here in the states there are certain individuals who's greed out weighs the health and well being of the animal. These individuals will do and just about anything and everything to make a few dollars. They lie about health testing, lie about bloodlines and all for money. In the end, the dogs who never should have been bred end up having litters of puppies that should never have existed. The owners end up with with an animal that isn't genetically sound, with behavioral issues and genetic defects such as hip, elbow, heart and eye issues. All of these things can be tested for and all are because of bad breeding.

Amclaren it sounds about the same as here in Australia then. Pedigree papers are easy to doctor. It also has not helped that people have gone damn right bonkers when it comes to dogs. Paying crazy money for dogs they believe are pedigree lol but are your average cross breed with even less care taken in regards to the animals conformation and health. One couple fell inlove with a cav malt x so they found a registered breeder( LOL ) in i believe Canberra. They paid over a 1000 for it and transport only to receive a very odd little sweetie. Front legs shorter then the back. Not much like they expected. Most people don't realize that many many generations are put in the pure bred dogs before they get anywhere near a pedigree. So anything can really come out in a litter. Oh and another charmer that is showing up. Is breeders forcing papers on a owner and then demanding the dog is desexed. So the can not go anywhere near a show ring or breed. About the only real value to having the papers.

Areyousaying idontknowmyname I absolutely despise what people can get here for mixed breeds. It's disgusting honestly. I have had some people come into the clinic absolutely convinced that because it's a mixed breed it won't have things like hip dysplasia. They dont seem to understand that if the parent dog is genetically unhealthy the pups will be as well. I have nothing against mixed breeds but the fact that people will spend two grand on a "Cava-chon" or "Chorkie" is absolutely ridiculous. In my opinion go spend a couple hundred at your local shelter. Your likely to get the sibling not cute enough to sell but you save a couple grand and save a life. That's unfortunate to hear about the experience your friend had. However, those experiences help others learn what not to do.

Emily R you can work a shepherd in Texas. You have to exercise them and keep them used to the heat. They also make vests that hold water on the dog and cool them. My flat coat pit mix has the same body temperature as the shepherds. And yes we check before during and after working them to keep them safe.

Because clearly that wasn't what the owner was expecting soon as she saw how short it was, So in the long run dede did nothing she wouldn't have explained about the summer coat or the owner wouldn't have had the reaction she had. Why did you shave this boy? German shepherds have a double coat, and the botom one might never regrow, you basically 'f*cked' with his thermostat. This fur is an isolator for both warm and cold... poor guy now he doesnt have protection from the sun also it didnt look that matted that it couldnt be brushed out, my doggos fur was waayyy worse when we adopted him, and never got shaved

You aren't suppose to shave down a double coated dog unless it's because of heavy mats or medical issues that absolutely require the hair to be gone. Other than those two reasons, shaving a double coated dog does nothing but long term harm. Too many groomers these days only focus on the money aspect and of course she probably charged a fair amount. Now I don't know if the owner had already said that the dog had medical issues or not so it needed the shave down, but the groomer really didn't seem to have the best interest in for the dog. Only herself and her business.

This was hard to watch. Aside from getting into the politics of shaving down a double coat. The dog clearly has hip issues. Alot of European GSD do. Im in ireland and unfortunately the 'slanted back' look has been the desired look for some time on show scene the sad reality is that comes at a medical cost.I used to groom and would never have kept this dog on the table or that bench in the bath. He clearly struggled to stay standing for any length of time. He should have been groomed on the floor, he was well behaved..The dog is no doubt in pain or discomfort because of his hips, it is not because he is fat or untrained. SMFH

If you want to call yourself “my favorite groomer” you should really try to be their favorite groomer, not only the owners favorite but the dogs favorite. You shouldn’t tell the owner how they should or shouldn’t discipline their dogs. I had a German Shepherd service dog, watching this is really unsettling. The only time my dog had anything shaved on him was when he had vet procedures. The groomer I used would turn away anyone who wanted to shave their double coated dog. ☹️

Everything you all say about double coated dogs might be true and I agree. But watch the end of the video, it's worth it. She talks about veterinarians recommending the shave, the dog being on drugs and thus appearing to be a senior and other interesting stuff. Dede is for sure one of the good ones out there.

I'm thinking about starting my journey in the grooming business and I have already vowed to not shave a double coated dog unless the dog is extremely matted. If the owner comes in asking for a summer cut (and it's my own buisness) I will happly educate them why it's not the best idea and why I wont do it especially for a GSD. I own one and I would never dream about shaving her. I just routinely brush her. The undercoat actually helps them block the sun and by shaving both the top and bottom it exposes their sensitive skin to the elements. It also shields from the cold and heat. Shaving double coated pets will change their growth pattern and damage the hair.
