Best time ever was eating off of the Food trucks in Salzburg, Austria. We were up late and desperate to eat and we found the trucks that sell the sausages wrapped in bread and Stiegl beer! Siting in the beautifully lit Altstadt by the Salzach was a moment I will never forget!

I remember my first trip to Europe. Was with a large group of high school students. One particular day stands out the most. We were in Switzerland (Zermatt). The day was warm and sunny. Not too hot. It was farmers market day. My friends and I split up and everyone purchased something different to eat. We found a nearby park and picnicked. Bread, local cheese, fresh fruit, salad greens with a locally made vinegrette (yum!) and water (No wine since we were all teens under 18). With a view of the Matterhorn. Now that's a perfect day. Thanks for these videos Rick and bringing back such fond memories.

Personally, I'm a vegetarian when I eat at home. But when I travel, I feel that it's just more practical in some cases to just suck it up and eat meat. It also gets you more in touch with the local food culture.

Tipping may not be expected and the serving staff may well be paid a living wage but I have never seen a tip refused by someone on a low wage. It helps things along if you intend to use the same place more than once and turn up without a reservation,.....................vet often you will somehow magically be squeezed in with a smile. Well worth the tips.
@sandrobindelli56079 жыл бұрын
+Sue Harvey Generally in Italy tipping is considered valid only if you leave a robust sum because you are exceptionally happy with the service, generally people do the "beau gest" of leaving the change from your bill on the table (say your bill is 47,30 euros you'll leave the 2,70 in coins that the waiter brings you back from your 50 euro or 100 euro bill, in this case keepin the 50 euro bill that is returned), this is standard when eating out with large parties of friends also because it would be a mess to sort out everybody's split change.

Every country/region has its own unique cuisine that offers something new to the world. It's sad that so many people are ignorant to that. France may be famous with its cheese and wine, but Greece also offers hundreds of types of both, with as high quality as any other. Cuisine stereotyping is real :)

Don't expect global cuisine at a hotel breakfast buffet (well maybe except the UK). It will not usually be a mix of Asian/local/Western to appease everyone, it will be local fare in hot and cold options. The basics like egg and sausages, cold cuts, bread, muesli, fruit and yoghurt cover all grounds to suit everyone's tastes.
@franci.zollo164 жыл бұрын
In Italy, not only every region, but mostly every town has its own local specialty, and they vary a lot from North to South. Try to find that out when you're visiting, by asking: "qual'è la specialità del posto?", "what's the local speciality here?"

Oh, I so miss eating my way through Italy, France and Spain. We stayed away from fast foods, and I don't think I had a bad meal, even when ordering the wrong thing it turned out to be awesome (and don't get me started on the gelato in Italy...one particular place faced the Pantheon, and yes it was overpriced, but nevertheless heaven).

Some more practical tips: always ask for the price before ordering. Even as a seasoned traveller, I got surprised when a very fine, but not very pretentious grilled fish (ugly creature, but tasty nonetheless!) turned out to be over 60 euro for 2. If possible, ask for the menu. In Italy, many restaurants charge you for 'scoperta', meaning cutlery. It's a small 2 to 3 euro surcharge if you go for a full meal with starters and desert, but on a slice of pizza, that 2 euro can be almost half of your meal. So know what you're going to eat, and pick a restaurant that has the cutlery included or not, depending. Many places have a cheap lunch menu, so at noon, it's often less expensive. Eating the lunch for 20 euro in a fancy place is still a lot cheaper than the evening menu at 50 ;) Splurging can be done in eastern Europe, too, even for those on a budget. the coffeehouses in Budapest have little to nothing to be outdone by Vienna, and has some great food, too. And yes, the location can add something to a meal, but don't forget, it often comes with a price to pay. You will evidently pay more for a pizza with view over the Colosseo, or mussles and fries on the Grand'Place in Brussels than elsewhere in the city. Even within a restaurant, that's often the case, at the bar is the cheapest, at a table inside a little more expensive (but more convenient to eat), but the most you pay for eating and drinking on the outside seats. Again, it can be worth the few extra euro, sipping a cappuccino on Piazza San Marco in Venice at Caffè Florian is absolutely spectacular. It's just something to consider before you go and sit down.

barvdw No problem, however, an interesting comment. Normally in bars or pubs in Italy you shouldn't pay the "coperto" and the Lazio region, Rome, abolished this cost, but some "habits" die hard.

gabrie caruso it is not hard at all. Many options for vegetarians. In cafeterias and dining halls, always an option for vegetarians. Also at shops and restaurants there is always good options also for vegans.
@barvdw9 жыл бұрын
gabrie caruso Depends, most traditional cuisines are still very much meat-based, which means that, sometimes, you have to do with a salad with not much extra in local restaurants in the country side. Still, it's improving, even in countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic or Germany. And especially in the cities, you will find a lot of options, and even vegetarian restaurants.
@67claudius9 жыл бұрын
+gabrie caruso I can tell you in central and southern Italy the meat is not dominant, so there are no problems, it's different in northern Italy, however, there are several non-meat dishes.
@KateDenthimamai9 жыл бұрын
The real traditional and healthy greek cuisine is all about legumes, vegies, fish and meat is supposed to be served once a week, you can find delicious vegan souvlaki and you will learn many recipes for vegetarian food. You will have no problem at all in europe, there's so many cuisines and the flavors are very balanced. My boyfriend went to California in september and he told me every food he tasted is either too salty and spicy or very sugary.

I find Middle Eastern food to be the best in the world, Europeans don't even know what real food looks like, Europeans have the best dairy products, like Cheese, Hams and sausages, but that's it. I couldn't believe it when I was in Europe, when they brought us raw meat, we thought they didn't like us in their country and tried to insult us but later we learned that's was their best food, ha ha ha, unbelievable, that's what cave men eat, the stone age people, the best foods are from Iran, According to my experience. Indian food is so good too, the breads are the best too, I like Arabic breads, very good. The European food looks like cake not food, ha ha ha.
@huskytail2 жыл бұрын
🤦♀️ you have neither idea of what cuisine is in Europe, which extends from Portugal to the Ural mountain and from Iceland to Istanbul, but you also have no food culture either. A few countries in Europe, France, Belgium and Italy for example, consider it a great offence to meat to cook it well done. It's basic, general knowledge of.. food.
@nm19782 жыл бұрын
@@huskytail no you have no food culture, nice try, don't blame it on middleEastern foods, and I have seen all your foods, it's nothing more than potatoes and raw meat, Istanbul has Turkish Middle Eastern style foods too. You are nothing when it comes to food. The Middle Eastern foods are the best in the world.
