I advocate this advice more often than I care to detail. Your set up “flow” or lack there of, is a huge contributor/detractor to your focus

Just figured out that I dont like having multiple rows of modules in a case. Its overwhelming. I prefer grouping modules in skiffs. For example, I have vcs, vcfs, vcas and samplers in one skiff, while I have a mixer, ouput and fx in another and in a third skiff I have sequencers, envelopes and lfos. Might end up disliking the patch cable length mess but its a give and take and really most important, whatever gets me to making music.

Yeah man, .. I almost hate to admit, how right you are about a "makeover" .. I do think, a darker side of modular, is how much redundancy/very close to redundancy can occur, in various audio functions. I've just a fraction of the gear that you have, .. and I don't have the diligence & zeal that you have for keeping organized. I feel lucky in deciding to stay mainly with Muteable Instruments, .. at the scale that I'm at, presently (all fitting in a Moog 104 case) .. though, I do have outsourcing in a synth keyboard, old Roland digital recorder, and guitars. So, .. I get you, about cable messes. I have a bag of zip-ties, on hand .. and am getting more confident in taking the effort to bundle my cable runs, soon. Back, 6 months ago .. I took the trouble to use clear shipping tape, & foil streamers of various colors, on each cable/cord end (but not Eurorack patch cords, obviously) to assist on my cords, and cables .. so that some months, down the road, from now .. when I've totally forgot, why I've decided to have today's present hookup arrangement, as it is .. I can at least deduce easier, what the heck it is, I have in play, now. And, using a post-it to remind myself, on the Roland Recorder, (serving as a mixer mostly, now) what is streaming in, from where. That post-it .. I refer to it, .. lots!

I upgraded my post production studio this summer to work in 5.1. I have weird shaped room and had to move some keys furniture around to have the space to do it. This led to the total redesign of my playing space in the room wich in turn got me working in a totally new way that gets me to do things that could not have been possible otherwise.

Great to hear how going to 5.1 actually helped your workflow!! I worked in 5.1 while and found it super difficult. Even just keeping a stereo field and sweet spot position, I found over the years really constricting. I wish I had a separate mix room and another room for my synths and noise makers. I’ve been using headphones a lot and when I need to critically mix, I sit down. But again, most rooms if we are honest are woefully problematic and can’t be trusted. So I try to just roll with it and don’t ever trust my mix for anything critical and I take it elsewhere. :(
@robriki2
@robriki2 Жыл бұрын
@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE I don't use the 5.1 for music mixing per se. I am a musician that turned sound designer for TV and cinema and then mixer. I had a gig to mix a feature documentary both for theatrical and TV that fall so I upgraded my setup. The learning curve wasn't that steep since i saw many mixers worked in different post facilities over the years. I have the chance to have access to a movie theater to double check my work. I have the worse shaped room ever, but I've delivered so much material from here, I just know my space! My 1st 5.1 mix for TV passed QC with absolutely no complaint! And I also wish I had a separate room for music and mix, but this is a luxury i can't afford right now.

Hey. Youve got alot of gear. At one point I had all my stuff up on tables like you.. but I constant got tired of all the dust getting all over the stuff. I even had a filtered unit that was supposed to collect dust in the air. How do you solve this problem? Awesome studio btw! Cheers from Sweden
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE

Thanks for stopping by! Yeah dust is def an issue. Here's what I do. One I have an air filter in my room. Second, I don't have my windows open on windy days. Third, I have a portable Dyson vacuum with a long nozzle that's just amazing for dust. You need a small brush, like a paint brush to unlodge the dust, then vacuum it up! Hope this helps! :)

G.A.S. prices are skyrocketing! I'm actually rebuilding my studio right now, and you've inspired me to go ahead and get it done. I had been putting it off for some time now, but I do like your strategy of moving one thing back into the room at a time. I have to move things within my living room, so I might just move one piece at time from one side of the room to the other. I've been meaning to e-mail you btw, my friend postponed the trip so I postponed that set up I was going to ask you about, but I'm reminded now again to reminded again to write ya a quick one.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE I will, I might make a video on it. It's kind of ridiculous... I bought an 8k TV to run as a VCV Rack monitor, I got an Expert Sleepers ES-9 to run the CV/Audio in and out to my real rack, so it's like a mega hybrid
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE

You know what would be great is if the TV was multi-touch screen. That'd be way fun. I did play with a VCV rack on a big screen for a bit, but I got a bit tired of using the mouse and keyboard to access it even if it was wireless. Let me know how the ergonomics go.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE It's been pretty good so far. I've focused on getting a standing setup, so standing a few feet from the monitor has been comfortable. I have to say that the 8K TV is kind of killer here, simply because you can actually read the text on the modules so much better. It was some work to set up, but once I got it dialed in, the size of the real modules was close to that of the virtual ones, and they were legible

@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE what desk are you using for the mac/controller setup?
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE 6 ай бұрын
oh man! I kinda can't recall. I "THINK" it was at Office Depot! It was at the time the most affordable "adjustable" non-motorized stand/sit desk. Back then, motorized sit/stand desks were insanely expensive. But this one I could adjust it to fit my pull out NI88 keyboard, which is just a must for me, since I write and produce as a keyboard player.

I am trying to figure out how and if I want to put my eurorack cases on the wall. If I do that, I think Id like to do the same thing with my guitar pedals. And Id like to be able to take the cases and pedals off the wall when I dont feel like standing. I could do standing desks but I like having the studio space be more open for me to move around without running into stuff.
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE 2 жыл бұрын
oh yeah! I've seen @AndrewMasters in his old studio mount guitar pedals on the wall. For me the biggest issue would be cable management. I hate cables that dangle so there's a lot of drilling dry wall and fishing cables for me. And sometimes honestly I don't know if it's worth it other than satisfying my OCD. But as long as there's a way to cleanly supply power, that could work? I'm more worried about ergomonics and the ability to patch comfortably. It's still a BIG work in progress for me.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE I rent my place, so no cables going in walls, but I can hang cases and boards to hold whatever. My bigger focus, as you said, is ergonomic and keeping my back feeling good. Right now, I have my cases propped in guitar a frame holders on a table top to give me the angle while sitting but I dont have an option yet if I want to stand (unless I look over my case and pedals) which is no good for the back. Probably an adjustable height table is the best route.
