I'm on Will's side in this argument. You don't win a non-Eurovision audience with songs they're mostly not familiar with. "Waterloo" has crossover potential, swing in "Ne partez pas sans moi", use "Believe" as the main base for the medley and insert other mainstream songs to make the whole medley work. Perhaps we can get a Eurovision medley in a possible sequel?

As a Johnny-come-relatively-lately to all of this despite having been aware of Eurovision for decades, I have to agree with William about using well-known American pop songs if the purpose was to expose ESC to a wider (American) audience. It made the movie - and that moment - feel very inclusive instead of being totally exclusive. It was a gracious concession to the uninitiated. I also agree about "Euphoria" as a song choice for the movie but only because I'm familiar with it since it's been on my playlist for years after I stumbled across it on KZbin. "Only Teardrops" has been on my playlist for a really long time now as well. In the end it probably came down to mashing songs together successfully for the scene more than anything. Plus who doesn't want to sing along to pop music from two of the world's biggest female icons known for inspiring moments of absolutely fabulous camp, Cher and Madonna!!? The only nit I have is Alexander Lemtov's "voice" in the scene. I realize the character is meant to be a send-up/composite of Russian male contestants (although at times it struck me as more Spanish than Russian) but his singing style just doesn't get into the groove. Give me Sergey! Of course it would have been extremely rude not to let Lemtov sing along during a song-along at his own house. But still... Sergey. Question: Do they ever perform duets during the competition with the various artists or would that not fit into the rhythm and timing of the show? Too difficult to pull off and inherently unfair I suppose? I ask because y'all were obviously very excited seeing them sing together and I've never seen a full ESC show, only random individual performances on KZbin. It's very entertaining watching your giddy and joyous reactions to the various stars of Eurovision appearing in the film and singing together. It must be gratifying seeing them showcased so wonderfully outside more familiar environments considering you actually know (most of? all of?) them!
@cityonfoot60234 жыл бұрын
They were trying to get to the American audience. Only the actual Eurovision fans will know about the featured artists. And not everyone in this generation even knows about Waterloo or Ne Partez Pas Sand Moi. Including some of the standards bring the audience in. And if they like the renditions on the songalong, there’s a chance they’ll want to know who those artists are. And then that would lead them to the actual contest!

I used to avoid ESC every year up until this movie, and I know plenty of friends who's first experience with ESC is this movie. And for the first time I'm honestly ready to actually excited about it rather than begrudgingly being forced to watch it with friends every year. I'm glad to see at least William understands the realities of creating PRODUCT and how elements need to be carefully balanced for viewers new to Eurovision. Because, HONESTLY (sorry to say) but it was REALLY difficult to sit through Deban criticisms, which felt (at the same time) like an attempt to gatekeep (like they wanted this to be an ESC-veteran ONLY experience) while simultaneously also lacking the empathy and industry insight into how this movie based on the ESC could and might appeal to new viewers like myself. It kind of left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I agree with Deban. Like even though they are reaching for a wider audience, the point of the movie was to reach WIDER AUDIENCES. It would’ve been nice for others to hear Eurovision songs. I’m sure Americans would’ve known songs like Allez Ola Ollez and Toy. Maybe add sound of silence. But it would’ve been nice to feature some controversial songs like Flying the flag, Hardrock Hallelujah, Zero Gravity, Hatari (forgot song name), teenage life, Monaco 2006, Iceland 2006 etc. they’re ONE OF the reasons why Eurovision is super iconic.

I have to side with Deban, as usual. It would have made sense for it to be like a battle between the biggest eurovision stars each one of them being a bigger Eurovision nerd, remembering the greatest hits. Diva, Fairytale, even Insieme or Nel blu even if it would have been a little on the nose, an attempt at a Balkan ballad. I love Cher and one of my childhood memories is my aunt blasting Cher's Believe casette but I don't think it fits. I get that the american audience needed american songs but even Total eclipse of the heart would have been ok-ish Bonnie Tyler being an ex contestant or even better Lemtov singing to Sigrit What i gotta do to make love me and the boys from Blue come in(it is Will Ferrellesque but he is not as big of a fan as he says)

OK guys, let's remember that this film is NOT a documentary! It is a Cinderella fairytale set within the premise of the Eurovision Song Contest! As an American who was completely unfamiliar with the Eurovision Song Contest, I am now aware of it and would love to see the contest itself here in America, but let's not try to make this endearing romantic fantasy into a documentary about the ESC because that entirely misses the point! The final performance of Husavik pulls on our heartstrings because it speaks to the deep love of one's own "hometown," wherever that may be on this planet and in one's heart ... everyone can relate! THAT is the magic of this film!
