I had always associated Aslan's table breaking in two with the tearing of the temple veil in two when Christ was crucified. I hadn't thought of the tablets given to Moses.
@bobdubАй бұрын
Interesting!
@ifronninАй бұрын
It probably refers to both, just as both are connected in Scripture.
@MalcolmGuitespell29 күн бұрын
Those stone tablets are often referred to as ‘the tables of the law’ and of course what is written on the stone table is the law of punishment for a traitor -the deep magic’ of Natural Law but salvation by Christ/Aslan’s sacrifice is grace ‘a deeper magic from before the dawn of time’

My cigar time companion. Thank you sir for the discussion. We each have the stone blade, one to wield and one to be held against us. The power to save ourselves, the power to fell our foes. Psalms 44:5 - 7 come to mind

I just finished rereading Dawn Treader. One of my favorite books in the Narnia series. Eustace is a very interesting character and probably my favorite, probably because of and in spite of his flaws. It's amazing to read these books because I really do wish we had gotten more adventures from Lewis. There's a lot he alluded to that we never got stories for, like how the Lone Islands became part of Narnia and where the other people in the world outside of Narnia came from or the intervening years between Silver Chair and the Last Battle. Still, I'll always treasure these books and always be amazed that many of these books, despite being quite short, often feel much longer than they are. Lewis is quite amazing in that way.

Was asked just the other day, who would you have narrate your life? Most said Morgan freeman, and a fantastic voice that would be. As for myself, the only name that came to my mind was Malcolm Guite. Would be a wonderful and expressively passionate tale told in the perfect way.

The Dawn Treader is such a marvelous novel. It flies under the radar of the Narnia books because people approach it like a swashbuckling adventure story, and they really miss the beauty and allegory of it of the whole Christian life.

As a boy (im 50 now) I loved the maps at the back? of these books and used to laboriously copy them on sheets of paper with a biro in my mums kitchen. Then I'd , under her watch, burn off the odd corner, splatter a bit of candle wax on them and soak in cool tea and leave to dry as a fun actvity! Im glad I had that sort of childhood . Recently I found the entire set of Narnia books , just like the ones I had then and I bought them straightaway ,I can tell you!

I hadn't made that connection to the Prophets before. Always a pleasure to learn from you, Master Guite. I'd love to know the truth regarding form and essence, the metaphysical dimension behind the measurable accidents of things. The trouble is, it's not as though the physical dimension is irrelevant. After all, the abstract essence of a knife isn't much use for cutting vegetables. But the essence of a thing can't just be it's function, as function is even more external than material. Certainly, a person cannot be reduced to a single function.
@MalcolmGuitespell29 күн бұрын
We need both essence and ‘accidence’ as the philosophers named the stuff we are made of

“In our world," said Eustace, "a star is a huge ball of flaming gas." Even in your world, my son, that is not what a star is, but only what it is made of.” Your reading of profound texts like these and then addressing them with us is a privilege. The truth of this passage brought chills. I've been doing a deep dive of all of the visits to your home and I really love the nods to the ever present Arthurian journey you are on whilst making these videos. If you haven't already, I would love to hear passages and your thoughts on the legendary sword Excalibur. Thank you for the lore and wisdom!

Just a thought...with the touching of the stone blade the enchantment started. In 2 Samuel chapter 6 Uzzah touched the ark and was struck dead instantly. Perhaps Lewis had this in mind but toned it down a little :)

Mr. Lewis (and you!) appear to be recalling your Blake, from his passage at the end of "vision of the last judgment": "I assert for myself that I do not behold the outward creation, and that to me it is hindrance and not action. "What!" it will be questioned, "when the sun rises, do you not see a round disc of fire somewhat like a guinea?" Oh! no, no! I see an innumerable company of the heavenly host, crying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty!" I question not my corporeal eye any more than I would question a window concerning a sight. I look through it and not with it."
