Thanks UDF - interesting news. For the past 3 weeks the enormous car park at the Avonmouth docks have been crammed with MG EVs. You can see them as you cross the nearby bridge on the M5. Usually vehicles here move through rapidly, but these have been here longer. I have no idea if it has anything to do with your subject, but thought I would mention it in case someone knows some more detail.

Hi thanks for the video. on the 28th August I had 5 quotes via Carwow for MG5 Trophy the lowest cash price was £20,495 including any colour of my choice the highest was the RRP. The lowest price has now been withdrawn and now they want £33,495! I heard on the MG forum video some time ago that an estate version of the MG4 was due out back end of 2024 and recently the MG4 was going to have a facelift.

An interesting point that hadn't crossed my mind with MG because of the bulk sales they've had of the MG4 and the ZS EV as well. I would suspect they are well above the threshold. Also, the 2 HS in our neighbourhood are the PHEV kind, so also contributing to the mandated figure.

Don't get the long range MG5 . It has a Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery (NMC). Get the standard range which you can charge to 100% and is much safer in the conditions an EV has to endure. LFP is so much better.
@_Dougaldog4 ай бұрын
Recent reports suggest that continually charging LFP to 100% especially in warmer climates will cause some degradation. But it is recommended to charge to 100% frequently using LFP technology. This is primarily to allow more accurate range reporting as there is less potential difference in a charged/discharged LFP battery as compared the the NMC Lithium batteries (higher potential difference allows more accurate range reporting with less calibration). If my NMC drops to 85% capacity after 1000 full charge/discharge cycles (equivalent of 329,000 miles on 77kWh Extended Range) I'd live with that. At 85% my range would still be 280 miles... From a practical point of view with NMC, charge to 80%, if you're travelling any distance soon after charging then 100% is fine. Don't leave NMC battery sitting fully charged or with low charge for prolonged periods.
@SolAce-nw2hf4 ай бұрын
@@_Dougaldog Don't charge LFP to 100% if you know you are not going to use it. A weekly 100% charge before a trip is fine for BMS zcalibration and charge speed is also better up to 80%. It's not going to degrade as much as NMC, but if your daily commute is 50 miles there is no point in topping up for a 300 mile range.
@_Dougaldog4 ай бұрын
@@SolAce-nw2hf Agreed, the point I was attempting to highlight is that there is no specific reason to avoid NMC. Perhaps if I had full charging, Solar PV setup at home there would be some attraction to LFP as in more charge cycles. Could then be a convenient house storage battery when plugged in. I have no possibility of home charging, so higher capacity means less trips for me to moderately priced fast charger, or modestly priced Tesla rapid chargers :-)
@SolAce-nw2hf4 ай бұрын
@@_Dougaldog NMC is yesterday's chemistry. The little extra range you get can not be used if you want it to last and the Cobalt inside is really not great in case something does go wrong. Also the chances of thermal runaway are much higher than with LFP. So if you have a choice, get an LFP model. I have solar panels on my home, but also no way to (legally) charge an EV. I guess I'm stuck with public charging. But I would rather have 20% more charging trips than spend any money on something more dangerous and less likely to last.

A new estate model is not the reason for the 40% discount dealers are flocking their stock at. Private buyers, people putting their own money or taking out their own hideous lease deals don’t want EVs anymore. Company car buyers and fleets that the government is pushing into choosing EVs by penalising ICE cars will not choose an MG. EVs are an inconvenience. Without having your home charging, you are exposed to silly prices of around 60-80p per kWh. Poorer people who want a budget EV want cheap charging and don’t always own their own house or have a front drive. They don’t want to lose five figure sums in a year in depreciation. They don’t wan5 to spend half their free time at retail parks and charging stations, sipping overpriced coffee to do the same they used to quickly do on their way somewhere. It’s just flocking a dead horse.
