The Late Brake Show

3 жыл бұрын

Welcome to The Late Brake Show. In this episode Jonny Smith has the task of driving an EV converted classic Land Rover Defender from rural Wales into central London, where it is put inside world-renown retail store Selfridges. This 'E-Lander' was a project vehicle build commissioned by Selfridge's themselves in conjunction with Barbour clothing company in order to raise the awareness of more sustainable shopping. Jonny made a previous video for the Selfridge's Project Earth campaign ( www.selfridges.com/GB/en/feat... ) and Barbour's fascinating ReLoved jacket restoration/upcycling programme ( www.barbour.com/uk/reloved ), but this is a 'director's cut' with more specific details on the Tesla EV running gear beneath this 2015 Defender.
So called 'E-Lander' the car was built by Electric Classic Cars in Wales ( www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/ ) and modified specifically for the client to still perform off-road, as well as a town and country vehicle. The Tesla Model S large motor has been turned 90-degrees in order to power driveshafts to both front and rear, meaning it is a single motor 4x4, with enough power to keep up with an Aston Martin DBX or Mercedes G63 AMG SUV. At the same time it stealthily hides its lack of exhaust, long gearstick and engine, so unassuming eyes simply see it as an immaculately tailored Defender. Talking of tailoring, the interior was masterminded by Barbour, who supplied their classic tartan jacket lining, together with 'Vegan leather' for a soft, luxurious cabin.
The result? A scenic road trip in a Defender that drives better than any diesel Defender Jonny has ever tried. Expensive, yes, but these cottage industry EV converted classics will certainly form a strong part of charismatic futuristic motoring.
Stop. It's time for The Late Brake Show.

Agree re. the production quality is as good as TV, but more importantly the content & presentation style is thankfully free from the pressures of the attention-grabbing TV style - what I'm trying to say is that shows like this far exceed anything I've seen on TV recently. Nice work, Jonny.
@millomweb

@@AdamJayPe One of my absolute pet hates are captions you ought to read being plastered over video. They appear in this video on a yellow background. I was watching the video at the time, so didn't read any of them. They were an unwanted distraction. He mentioned no need for hi and lo ratios - so why were there labels for it in the vehicle ? He's just added mystery, unanswered questions - possibly failing to understand the vehicle. He also said the whine was a transmission whine, not the motor - well if that was the case, it was from the motor reduction gears, not the vehicle's transmission - you find a modern car - clutch down, engine off doing 50 mph (downhill!) won't whine like that ! They're silent - all you hear is tyre on road noise. Addendum: In fact, just sounds like an overgrown radio controlled car ! I'd guess for the same reason - straight cut spur gearing at the motor before it's reduced to engine speed and connected to the car's usual quiet transmission.

If I could I'd snap my fingers and make every new vehicle sold an EV, but for some older cars I wouldn't want to alter a peice of art like that. Its all preference and subjective opinion though. Absolutely great film. Love the defender, instead of spending years bringing out a replacement, this may be what Land Rover should have been working on. Totally agree it’s the way to save classic vehicles for the future.

I love the roar of a V8 like most petrolheads, but projects like this stir the soul. I have a 1977 280z 2+2 and been fantasizing about how it would be modified, so as to preserve it for longer. This video made me think of which brands would step up and join in an eDatsun effort on the interiors? This video is brilliant work on all fronts. Amazing engineering and genuine, deep appreciation for the Defender. Hats off to the Re-loved initiative by Barbour. More of that from others. Really well shot video Jonny. Respect!

You should check out his video on TV, they did a crazy Range Rover that was awesome. I think this is a way to go for one of theses. Great video. Very beautiful country side. My wife is from Ary.

Well done Vlog. Had a high end quality to it especially with the music overlay at the end. That makes a model of vehicle that I'm not particularly into in it's normal configuration into something interesting.

Awesome video Johnny, unfortunately I'm only 17 so I didn't experience your time on the tele but its awesome being introduced to your channel from the guys at Car Throttle, I will do my fair share of catching up through your KZbin channel. Thanks for the entertainment. Also Great Production and Film

Phenomenal camerawork and editing. I've been watching your channel since you left Fully Charged (which is a shame, you're such a good presenter and it's how I came about knowing you, but alas) and while your videos are always high-quality, this is just a cut above the rest (does anyone say that, anymore?). Just really good production that strongly impresses, more than usual.

Great piece! I love my electric i3 every bit as much as my dirty polluting S4 and Boxster. Nice to see a proper car person who can accept that electric power is just as awesome as dinojuice.
