EV Road Trip With No Rapid Charging

I've been an EV owner for a few months now and have managed to avoid the necessity to rapid charge for all that time. In this video I go away on holiday, a journey that will take me beyond the range of my vehicle and yet I manage to go to the holiday destination, travel around the local area and return home again with having to rapid charge at all. Not even once. How on earth did I do that?

Nice one Andy. We are campers and have taken the EV on three trips this year. One was well within range for the overall trip but the other two were further afield. One was 180 miles away. At home I don't have a wall charger, rather I have a 16 amp mennekes socket on my wall and an appropriate charge lead. Now, it just so happens that campsite electric hookups use the same 16 amp mennekes socket. As you will realise, charging was a piece of cake and we had no need to charge anywhere en route to the site or back to home. However, we needed a break so at the motorway services we just plugged in whilst we went to use the facilities and then get a coffee. A 20 minute stop added many many miles of electricity albeit at quite a hefty price. Cottages and B&B's with destination charging is definitely the way to go though. 👍

I couldn't agree more - I'm a big fan of destination charging where it makes sense to have them, which is pretty much everywhere people park and go off to do other stuff. It's a no brainer! 😊

We recently took our Ariya 63 on 1st long trip, it was only 130miles there but heavily loaded , 2 adults, 2 kids and with a full roof box and tow bar mounted bike carrier. I didn’t know where we was staying had a charger so we used an InstaVolt on route, not that we needed to but I didn’t want to get there and have hardly any charge. Anyway turned out there was a charger so a wasted trip to InstaVolt but not to worry! We had a fab time driving around north Wales. Thanks for a good rambly video. 😁

I can't blame you charging on the way - even if you had known there was a charger at your desintation you still don't know it's all working properly until you get there. Or perhaps that's me being a bit to sceptical about it all! I'm sure it's going to become more and more common to find chargers at all sorts of places. Glad you enjoyed the video. Nice to know a fellow Ariya owner was watching. 😊

We did the same when we visited North Yorkshire and stayed in a place with the family. Have to say though as we were paying £1600 for the week, it didn't cross my mind to ask permission to use £10 on electricity Having an outdoor plug or charger takes the stress out of traveling completely it's wonderful. For all UK holidays I'd essentially say it's a must.

I think the Ariya came with a standard 3-pin plug lead as well but I think I stuck it away in the loft thinking I wouldn't use it. I suppose even having that is better than nothing at all.

Excellent video yet again Andy 👍🏻 Have you had your recall notice yet from Nissan? Got mine the other day. Already had it booked in for a few niggles so they’re doing it at the same time….which is nice 👌🏻. Still love my Ariya and being on the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff makes charging really cheap so win win!!

Hi Tony. Yes, I've had mine too. I've got it booked in for 2 weeks tomorrow. I've had a warning message about the lane assist come up a few times so they're going to look at that too. I'm going to phone them tomorrow as the rear view camera has glitched a couple of times recently as well. May as well tell them and then if it all goes bad down the line they can't say they didn't know about. Not that I'm paranoid or anything 😂 My service is due at the end of December but I'm loathed to bring that forward otherwise it'll be a month early for every subsequent year after that. I'm glad you're enjoying the car - I still drive mine around with a stupid grin on my face! I'm on Octopus Tracker so while it's not as cheap as Go having the ASHP makes it overall much cheaper. I charged today for 17.94p per kWh, not too bad for non-Go tariff. 😊 Thanks for watching!
