She is one the greatest singers ever to have lived tragically the world never recognised her talent until after she died in 1996.

Beautiful. Simply the best female singer to have ever lived. So poignant when she sings 'And I dreamed I was dying.'

Eva is a natural singer-arranger-interpreter of songs. She makes every cover her own. That is rare.

I know right... Fields of Gold was such a lame song till Eva came along. (With apologies to the author, whoever that was 😂)

the tune is early 17th century by Hassler-often paired with the devotional christian lyrics "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" lovely guitar work with a lovely voice here, yes?

Lovely and lovely, yes. And God bless Paul Simon for creating this song.
@karelwolfs5715 Жыл бұрын
@@elizabethlinsay9193 It is indeed Hasslers composition, Bach made his version on that , and Paul Simon used Bach's version, Eva Cassidy made her version on Simon's version.

A few days after the 9/11 tragedy I saw Mary Chapin Carpenter perform at the tiny Gay Street Theater in Little Washington, Virginia. Everyone was raw and still shaken. She sang this song and there was not a dry eye in the room. And I had a sense that we all had a small healing in that three minutes. Sometimes a song just reflects back as if it was written for a time and place that comes in the future. Now here we are, 2021 with more than ten times the people dead from one cause only a year ago. 9/11s happening in one day. I just don’t know if there is a song for this. But I hope so. We need the healing.

How on earth can 6 people dislike this beautiful tune by Paul Simon ( + Bach & Hassler 😁) with its wonderful lyrics and Eva Cassidy's amazing performance? Too many years of brainwashing with dead boring rap and hip-hop with stupid lyrics and minimal tunes? 🙄
@debclare99424 жыл бұрын
Bjowolf2 I love this song and I love her voice, and I don't mind she changed the melody here and there because that's what she normally did, but she changed quite a few of the original lyrics which, for me, changed the message of the song somewhat.
@Bjowolf24 жыл бұрын
@@debclare9942 Well, just her interpretation - I don't mind, when it's done that well. Hmm, she didn't change Paul Simon's tune very much, but Paul Simon changed it a bit in some parts from Häßler's original and Bach's version and added some extra sections of his own ( the B piece: "And I dreamt I was dying ..." ).

Ein wunderbares Lied. Warum? Es ist die Melodie des Chorals "Wenn ich einmal soll scheiden" von J.S.Bach!
@katertom2 жыл бұрын
The tune is from an old German love song of 1601 by Hans Leo Hassler (Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret, das macht ein Jungfrau zart = My mind is disturbed by a fair young maiden). Paul Gernhard used the melody in 1656 for his translation of a Latin hymn (Salve caput cruentatum) to "Oh Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" later translated to English "Oh Sacred Head Sore Wounded". This was included into the Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eabYfZmNppeBb80 is the original version. Bach reused many tunes and chorals, be it his own or from another composer, as his duty as Thomaskantor was to provide weekly motets and the music for the church services with the Thomaschor and the Gewandhausorchester and to teach music. There was no time to create something original for every occasion. Also, the use of the same melody in church and secular music was common practice.

Somebody knows what they’re talking about. That’s the right provenance of the tune.

Love the vocal dynamics here. Truly inspiring and impressive. However, IMO, the softer, less dynamic renditions feel truer to the melancholic sense of the lyrics and music. I'm sure Eva's vocal abilities allowed her to perform any piece in any presentation style she desired. Wonderfully talented. Yes, past tense for "allowed" and "desired". Sadly, Eva lost her battle with skin cancer so young (age 33). But, fortunately for lovers of fine music and captivating, moving voices, be glad and appreciative that, in her relatively short time, Eva left her soul for all to feel and enjoy in her music and lovely voice... forever. ... Not comparing, just sharing for example contrast: The rendition by Crooked Still, heard as the final song to the beautiful yet bittersweet Amazon original series The English: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3Wwg4qodtVqiJI

The title fits the lyrics written by Paul Simon. Yes, the main musical theme is from Bach's hymn, but the bridge is Simon's and the song highlights his genius in adapting such a piece to the pop song structure. I think Bach would have approved.

A pretty lousy cover. She skewers the words, and sings it fairly listlessly.
