Eva Cassidy is my favorite singer of all time. She died. when she was only 33 of melanoma. Her rendition of “Over the Rainbow”, “Fields of Gold”, “Time After Time”, “Songbird”, will all leave you blown away by her voice and her playing on the acoustic guitar. She was taken from us far too soon but I am glad she is no longer in pain and singing with the other angels. Rest in peace, beautiful young woman, in paradise.

She absolutely slays this song and that is her on the guitar as well. @ 2:39 she breaks a string and doesn't miss a beat. Dude this rabbit hole is deep and gushing with goodness. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Songbird, Fields of Gold, What a Wonderful World, Chain of Fools, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Imagine, Time after Time, People Get Ready, At Last, Autumn Leaves and on and on. She kills them all.

I totally agree with you, she is the singers' singer, the top of the top! Tall Trees In Georgia, In The Early Morning Rain, Where Does The Time Go, If I Had A Golden Thread, You've Changed, Anniversary Song and others are all part of her legacy! How incredible she was! What a guitar player as well!

Love Eva!!!! Another we lost way too soon 😔 I discovered her when they used her version of "Wade in the Water" as background music in a CSI episode and I just had to find it - remarkable voice and I love her unique style. Another song she did that you might like was the one that hit in, I believe, the UK - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

Sting was important in bringing her fame (after her death). Sting heard her version of his song, Fields of Gold. He said her version was what he intended the song to be. He bought all the CD copies he could find and gave them to influential people he knew in music and broadcasting. BTW, Eva's sister said the most Eva ever earned at a gig was 80 dollars. The song was a TRADITIONAL MELODY ( PUB FAMILIAR) the words some century plus written after .... but, how many Irish or not TENORS HAVE DONE IT JUSTICE ..... up until the 1990s when this unknown, undeserved in life so short - ABSOLUTE ANGELIC POWERHOUSE VOICE - NAILED IT LIKE NEVER BEFORE ?!? Gone but, NEVER forgotten by this devotee - GBjj

She died in the late 1990’s, I believe, of multiple myeloma. She was in her early 30’s. I discovered her a few years later. She had the purest female voice I’ve ever heard. She could’ve had a record contract, but didn’t do it as they wanted to pigeon hole her... she just wanted to sing what she loved. Next try “Time is a Healer”...she had sooo much soul. Also, “Wade in the Water”...”Wayfaring Stranger”...”Autumn Leaves”...and for a song that will pierce your heart, her beautiful rendition of “Over the Rainbow “.

This is an old Irish wake/funeral hymn. As far as I can assess this song is a mother waiting for her son Danny to return from war...likely WW1. She hadn't heard from him since he left.... and he likely died in battle. So... she waits as the seasons come and go...still no word from him...she holds out hope as long as she can...but time takes her..as it likely did her son many years earlier..

A lot of singers covered this song since then. Hers is the best. It's like she sang her farewell. For best listening put this in bigger soundstage with digital dolby surround and 3D and you will cry. The recording put something in it that can only be heard in digital spatial soundstage. Excellent recording considering it was done live in a cavern pub.

Eva Cassidy sang a powerful version of Somewhere over the rainbow defiantly worth a watch. Her emotion vocals and arraignment of this classic changes the song so profoundly it would bring tears to a glass eye. Thank God it was recorded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKPHaYmhqblrrrs Eva Marie Cassidy (February 2, 1963 - November 2, 1996) was an American singer and guitarist known for her interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music, sung with a powerful, emotive soprano voice. In 1992, she released her first album, The Other Side, a set of duets with go-go musician Chuck Brown, followed by the 1996 live solo album titled Live at Blues Alley. Although she had been honored by the Washington Area Music Association, she was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C. She died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33.

Sadly, Eva passed away in November 1996, just 10 months after recording thius session (at Blues Alleyt). She was little known at the time, much more famous now. At the time of the session, she didn't know about the cancer that would take her life. Someone really ought to make a movie, but who would be able to handle the vocals?

Danny Boy wasn't written by an English lawyer (though he claimed he wrote it.). English copyright law underwent sweeping changes in 1910. All Common Law copyrights were struck down, and songs like Danny Boy were free to be appropriated and copyrighted by enterprising lawyers like Frederic Weatherly. Weatherly copyrighted more than 3000 of them. The Danny Boy lyrics were written at the time of the Irish famine - mid-1800's, when young men were forced to leave their families and sweethearts to sail overseas to make money to be sent back home.

Obviously, you have led a sheltered life. Eva Cassidy was arguably the greatest interpreter/storyteller in musical history. I have said elsewhere that, while I am not a religious person, listening to her is as close to a religious experience as I will ever come. You will learn just how many people have asked that her songs(especially "Over The Rainbow") be played at their own funeral. You will hear from many who, while driving, had to pull over to the side of the road, so overcome listening to her. You will learn that she had a severe case of stage fright and learned to deal with it with the help and support of Chuck Brown, The Godfather of GO-GO, an unlikely due. You will also learn that her full time job was working in a garden shop in Beltsville, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. You will also learn that, after her death, at the recommendation of an American friend, a BBC radio DJ played "Over The Rainbow" without ever hearing it beforehand and within a few days received thousands upon thousands of requests. At one point, she had 5 songs in the top 10 in England. There is so much more to the Eva Cassidy story, all of it beautiful, all of it poignant, all of it heartbreaking. A final bit of information: the very last song she ever performed was at a benefit concert for her in DC. She fought her way on stage, with the help of a cane, to sing "What a Wonderful World" even though she knew she was dying. There have been great singers, great stylists, great entertainers, but there has never been someone like Eva. If you;d like more information, feel free to write back.

Steve, I am one, who, 15 or 20 years ago now, fell from my living room chair to the floor upon listening to the 'Songbird' album. I have never been the same since. Her voice strikes the heart and there is no escape (not that anyone would ever want to escape Eva and her music). In all of my life, and I am now getting old, there is at the very, very top, only one Eva Cassidy! Of course I have studied her and her life and could not agree more, how poignant, how heartbreaking. She blessed us who know of her with her existence!
