@@dolphindudelife314lol this ain't nothing. I love Skyrim (not Vanilla - even at launch I thought it was a little too boring compared to Oblivion), but most of the major plot lines are under baked and unless you have quite a high tolerance for subpar gameplay loops, the dungeons are grating and IMO rely on big overhauls to the progression and/or combat systems in order to become genuinely satisfying for anyone who has played anything a little more refined. However, I do still agree it's one of the best games ever. With mods, that is certain. Vanilla is highly debatable, and probably depends how much you will be annoyed by the very unrefined combat and major lack of any other well done gameplay elements (sneak, thievery, persuasion, choices matter) by RPG standards. I think playing Baldurs Gate 3 is the perfect example of how genre defining a lot the things Skyrim practically ignored are.

Have to agree. I loved Skyrim had a blast when I did my "completionist run" where I did every quest and DLC. But after that there is nothing else. You go to replay it and nothing changes. And the guild quests are boring. I mean let's look at the Thieves guild. You earn you rank doing jobs, you don't just join them and get to do everything you do small jobs earning their trust, you build a rep among them, and then you meet the leader. In Skyrim you join them and they send you automatically on a job that the top members can't beat, you are the golden boy right from the get go. That's my problem with Skyrim, you are treated as a living god in the world, while in Oblivion you earn those ranks and treasure.

It's more like enlisting, becoming a four-star Admiral right out of bootcamp, and then going on inactive duty for a few weeks before ultimately retiring. Like how cool would it be if you could, say, summon mages or assassins to help you in combat? Or get special persuasion options in dialog based on the faction you now control? Or had some extra sidequests to help restore each faction to its former glory? And this might be ambitious, but what if you could only join one faction at a time and you could take part in some kind of power struggle between the other factions? Just, if Bethesda is gonna make it that easy to become a guild leader, at least make it an early part of the guild experience, not its endgame for god's sake.

Then, after you get to the halfway point, you start to realize that the quests are just boring rehashes of previous quests (just dressed up differently). While I did replay it once or twice, there wasn’t really much replay value. I think that's actually just Bethesda writing being dogshit. You can see it in the individual characters, like Babette using her vampire powers to seduce men to kill them (which also justifies it because they're pedophiles... even though her magical vampire powers make them into pedophiles in the first place) or the fact that no Argonians are born in October anymore apparently. Plus it can't be too dark or it'd be morally grey, or even make the player feel like a bad guy! No no, you have to target bad guys yourself and be a bunch of happy jokers so you don't feel bad about being an evil assassin. The Dark Brotherhood only ever killed bandit leaders and slave traders, right?
@anthonyray10714 жыл бұрын
I always assumed Astrid was actually talking about the Dragonborn when she tells you there's a contract on one person in the room. Until you join the Dark Brotherhood you'll periodically be attacked by a Brotherhood assassin, so we know there already is a contract. It would be a perfect introduction and explain why it didn't matter who died if all 3 options were the wrong choice.
@alexanderdesturion43464 жыл бұрын
I always knew about the assasins coming after you, but never thought about Astrid scene in this way... It really adds weight to it. She says something like - "You got one thing right - I give you an order and you kill. Everything else doesn't matter." And it really doesn't.

It kinda always bothered me how that’s never brought up. Personally I think it would’ve been much more impactful if the assassins that attack you were actually relevant to the plot in some way. Not directly, cause they’re dead, but they could’ve been friends with other members or the brotherhood. And you killed them. Just that alone could create animosity, especially once it’s revealed that you are the listener. “This random person whose killed some of our own is to be our leader?? Outrageous.” There could be a branching path (and actual branching path and not the garbage choice we ended up with) where on one hand you never gain the trust of your guild mates and are forced to flee and help destroy them. Or you can eventual endear yourself to them to the point where they develop a begrudging respect towards you..... and god I just wish the quests in this game made more sense and were better.

the issue with Skyrim’s guilds is Todd Howard’s game design philosophy of trying to make the player feel as powerful as possible as quickly as possible. that’s why you become the guild leader so quickly, and it’s why every guild has some kind of supernatural spiritual destiny shit. the stories are rushed in order to make you leader and force gods and magic into places they shouldn’t be, creating an environment where no questline can have its own personality, or storylines that fit

It also produces a weird mental whiplash as a sideeffect. Like, i can leave Helgen, go to Whiterun, haven't even killed my first Dragon yet, take the carriage to Winterhold because i want to be a mage. 2 hours later, your scrawny little scrub PC who has just reached Level 10 and dies when that Bandit over there looks at him funny is made the Archmage of the College for no particular reason other than that your predeccessor suddenly died and your superiors, who by all accounts would have a much more rightful claim to that position, eat the biggest humblepie in the cosmos. It just doesn't make any sense, even when you take all the sidecontent into account. It makes roleplaying as anything but a sellsword completely impossible (oh, the irony). The biggest tragedy about Skyrim to me is that the really interesting stuff is hidden away, almost as if the developers were a bit ashamed of it or bullied by someone to make it less accessible.

It's also what makes this game so appealing to many, because this design allows for a really effortless gameplay loop. There is no struggle (unless you choose to up the difficulty which makes everyone hit harder and yourself hit less hard), at any moment you can just press on without having to give a shit about HOW you wanna play. You just do whatever you want, and you'll succeed. It's incredibly convenient and you really don't ever alienate the broader audience, because you can still enjoy it as long as you turn off your brain. It's basically the sitcom of gaming. You just sit there and relax. It's just a product that isn't meant for players to truly engage with, and that sucks for those who would love to have more depth in a game that has so much potential.

Every organization in the game treats you as an outsider/savage until you gain enough karma at their side and you very rarely are allowed to join them like the Brotherhood, or work for them. You don't change your entire occupation from courier to lead cannibal at White Glove Society, boss of the Omertas or leader of the Boomers.

Even with master enchanted gear, magic res cap, armor cap and potions that heal for 500hp. Thunderbolt that does like 800dmg when dual casted, at 0 cost. It still takes me 15 minutes to kill 1 dragon. And it'll take me like 4 tries lmao. Still, the original comments point isn't valid. Stories are inherently about special people. There are billions of stories of people doing normal things, the ones that are told are of jesus, of the messiah, of emperor's. Special people who did special things. Every elder scrolls character is inherently going to be a Jesus character, because that's the point. If you wanna role play as a Joe schmo who hunts all day just to meet ends meat, and never does anything special. The game gives you the liberty to do that too, I have several characters that never join a guild, and spend their entire playthrough hunting, dungeon diving and nothing else. Eventually I retire the playthrough and in my head I say, "They met their end like hundreds before them, without name or story." In my head many of my characters are the dead adventurers you find in Skyrim. They're people who reached for something they couldn't attain because they weren't special enough, sadly.

If the thieves guild ultimate heist happened in like the palace of kings/ the blue palace, instead of yet another cavern, I would be totally okay with it's storyline. How do they know whether or not a god damn sweetroll is stolen?! I can understand weapons or armor, as those could be identifiable in alot of cases, say a signiture mark a smith might make, or some kind of carved or sewn identifier, but a regular iron arrow? That dark brotherhood quest where you kill the girl at the wedding can be more complicated then just sneak up behind during speech and whack with mace. There is a bow across the courtyard so you could shoot her and run. The gargoyle above is loose, and could be pushed on her to kill her. If your a magic user you can cast frenzy on her husband to be and watch him kill her. So many better options
@theccarbiter4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the game doesnt incentivize any of those options. It's better to just kill her as quick and soon as possible cause you dont get any other special reward if you do it in a creative way.
@theccarbiter4 жыл бұрын
@Grunt ELCAN man idk why youre reading into a critisism too much "oh whats the point of anything cause were gonna die" isnt a valid argument. In oblivion if I killed the target a different way then I would be rewarded for such but I didnt have to so the game makes it clear that the main goal is for the contract to be complete but the different ways you can accomplish that contract and for a bonus incentivizes using the other more creative and immersive options where I can feel like an assassin that always goes that extra step and feel like it's not unnoticed that I'm so faithful to what the contract is asking or I could be an assassin that doesnt mind if a few extra people die or sure the contract wasnt followed step by step but the guy is dead and thats what matters so I dont expect a greater reward for sloppy work. Skyrim doesnt care about any of this and just sends you somewhere to kill someone for the same reward every time and they are pretty much the same as those bounty quests you can get at any inn in skyrim. The reason I am doing the dark brotherhood questline is to feel like an assassin not a mercenary so of course I'd want contracts that are planned out and not just "we found a guy living in the middle of nowhere go kill him and dont worry you wont get a bounty" you even said im technically right when i say whats the point in using the creative way in that one contract but then go on to ask whats the point in playing the questline anyway. The point in playing the questline is to feel like an assassin and I, and many others, dont feel like an assassin when I kill someone of significance by literally walking up to them during a speech and attacking them then taking out 50 guards and being told I'm one of the best assassins there are despite everyone having seen me and killing 50 extra people (an obvious embellishment but you get the idea) but hey I could've hit the rocks to kill her right but nothing would have changed I'd still be the best assassin and I can't think of one other assassination where this option occurs. I'm not saying the rock option shouldn't be there I'm saying it should be the better option but as far as the game goes, it;s not and it is by far the worst option which it shouldn't be, in fact it really should be the only option because a great assassin wouldnt walk up to someone and kill them during a speech they would use rocks but the game doesnt send that message it tells you that you made the right option no matter what option you made and that's why it's pointess to use the rocks because its the same thing as walking up to her and killing her in front of everyone.

@Tattle Boad I am fully aware Skyrim was considering a fantastic game at release, so was Fallout 3 and that game is trash too. I don't hate it because it's trendy to do so I just genuinely don't see anything to like about it. The combat is meaningless and it never feels like anything is making contact. The main plot is shallow and boring, the sidequests are linear and uninteresting. The world feels like nobody gave a fuck, I mean does no one in Skyrim know what magic is? It feels like besides the College of Winterhold you're the only person with access, such as prisons not bothering to restrict your use of it. Animations are some of the worst I've ever seen. The graphics are dated and kinda shit, even for the time, the game hardly even runs cause it's held together by tape and spit. Apparently it’s not worth killing the dark brotherhood because you get more money and gear, but if you don’t appreciate a group of people who might kill innocents nor do you appreciate doing it for the tenth time, then it’s totally worth it.

In fairness it’s a very unique and cool thing, the only criticism I have of it is that it’s basically a one and done charge in and attack the sanctuary, I feel like they should’ve made you sniff out the brotherhood and hunt them down one by one, if not that then at the very least have you do some investigating and discover the Black door, it feels weird and dumb that a guard just knows where the hideout is, especially considering how long it took an author whom was an expert on the subject to find the Falkreath sanctuary and then sneak in

@@poggies7639 Besides, hunting members of the DB one by one is a great way to let the player having an assassination quest line without being part of the assassin's guild. You want your "track and kill" story line but don't agree with the DB's morals ? Go against them.

The more they dumb down the game though, the more popular it gets. So it can't be argued that it does not work. After all, Bethesda is a business, not a charity. Blame people's stupidity encouraging companies to make games dumber and dumber.
@Robert3994 жыл бұрын
@@TheHarcipoter It's not that clear-cut. You need to remember: 1) You can overshoot and lose popularity and, for some reason, game companies never seen to realise until they've done it. Even ignoring 76, Fallout 4 got a lukewarm reception compared to Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, despite its sales. 2) Sales and expectations are based, to some extent, on previous entries, especially with pre-order culture. Fans take time to fall out of love with a series and review scores tend to be anchored but the damage is still being done, even if you don't see it fully until 2-3 games down the line. Anecdotally, I'd say Bethesda's acclaim and popularity peaked in the Oblivion to early Skyrim years. After Fallout 4, years of Skyrim re-releases highlighting its flaws and, of course, 76, I'd say Bethesda is on the verge of irrelevance. If Starfield isn't great, I don't think anyone will care what they do after that.

they had to appeal to the casuals. Trying to explain all of the lore in this game through dialogue and quests would be a massive and unrealistic undertaking. I feel like you don't understand how much lore there is or you don't have an understanding of how much time and money it would take to teach the lore in any given game, without the use of books, would take (which don't even account for all of the lore in the first place). Also, while the lore isn't anything complicated to understand, it is *A LOT*. Also, bethesda is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. They want anyone to be able to pick up their games now and play them feeling like they know whats going on. Casuals do not like a lot of lore or story that is in anyway nearing complex. If you ever talked to a casual fan of Skyrim or Oblivion, they have absolutely no idea about anything lore related within the confines of the game, let alone anything UESP related. They never paid attention to anything. The "Skyrim 2" meme exists for a reason. A lot of people played through Skyrim not even knowing it was a part of a series. A LOT. Those people would be turned off by having to use their brains to think about anything.

As much as I enjoyed it at the time, Skyrim's biggest issue is that everything exists in a vacuum. Quests don't change anything about the world itself, even the main ones, and people don't acknowledge your accomplishments. Morrowind has problems of its own but beating the game removes an entire weather effect from the game and everyone refers to you as Nerevarine, most being in relative awe of your presence - and most having high dispositions towards you for saving the land. Maybe its nothing crazy but its something at least, and I don't think it would have been that difficult to have the NPCs refer to you as Dragonborn in a similar fashion. Or having Dragons fear you now instead of still just randomly appearing and divebombing you.

I think of it like each quest is a strand, in a game like New Vegas, almost every quest is linked. Helping the Legion makes you enemies with the NCR. The quest are connected in a web that shapes the world around you. But in Skyrim each quest happens, then that’s it. Theres no connection.

Well, to be fair, Astrid had to gather assassination missions without the direct call the Night Mother gives, so she had to have been using a information network of some kind. The problem is, the Night Mother Ritual isn't exactly something you brandy about, and while you can have contacts with criminal types(Devin, Blackbreir) to cover inquiries that way, who would a citizen go to first if they found out a neighbor was performing an assassination ritual? Probably the guards. So having a contact in various city guards makes sense, and it's not like the Brotherhood is afraid of talking about their killings. The real reason you should kill them is their lack of descreetness.

They focus so much on a big, beautiful world to explore and forget to make any quest or faction motivations make sense or any decisions have any consequence
