You're not late dear. I am 60 years old. I learned and remember English class where I grew up. Which was blessed, I know. I went to an English paroquial High School. People nowadays aren't taught proper English language so the older you are the better your chances are that you were taught to speak proper English! I am of the opinion that it is sadly a dying language. This video and the man, David-Wynn Miller who is no longer with us left us with a profound description of proper syntax language which is a most profound legacy. He is not with us anymore but I feel blessed to have seen what he is about and it you watch his video, you will learn what a person with his ability can accomplish. That is if we the people get enlightened. Applied knowledge is power. Knowledge in and of itself isn't. Do you understand what I am saying? I pray that you do! Itso powerful It can actually stop a war. Be sure to watch David-Wynn Miller's video, because if we follow his truth we empower ourselves and the more who do the more powerful we become. There is strength in numbers in more ways than one. I hope you are able to get something out of thisand pray that you ca. May God bless you and yours and keep you in truth and light because the smallest amount of light can illuminate darkness! In Jesus' holy name I pray Amen, amen amen. Amen = So be it! Sincerely Gina

Hi. I have a question. How about "where I work" in the sentence "This is the company where I work". Is it an adverbial phrase? Does it have the same function as Adverb in the VP? Thank you so much and have a nice day!
@evanashworth49010 ай бұрын
Hello! Unfortunately, the very basic tree structures I'm providing in this video aren't well equipped to address sentences like the one you mention. That said, I suppose I would call the "where I work" phrase an adjectival phrase, as it describes/modifies "company".

Hey Evan, thanks for making these videos! Just one question: How come, in the first interpretation, 'in my pyjamas' is part of the VP, not the NP? Would it not make sense if the NP was 'I... in my pyjamas', and the VP was 'killed a mouse'? (For reference, in the first interpretation you are in your pyjamas when you kill the mouse, as opposed to killing a mouse that was in your pyjamas.)
@evanashworth4904 жыл бұрын
Hello! In the first sense of the meaning, in which I am wearing the pajamas when I killed the mouse, the PP "in my pajamas" must be connected to the verb phrase because it's saying something about how the act of killing the mouse took place (that I was wearing the pajamas when I killed the mouse), or as I tried to say in the video, it means the same as "I killed a mouse pajamas-ly". However, in the other meaning of that sentence (that the mouse was in my pajamas when it was killed), the PP "in my pajamas" must be connected to the noun phrase "a mouse" because I'm saying something about the mouse itself: where it was located when it was killed. I hope that helps!

Just wondering if it might be more advantageous to refer to the diagram as a root structure rather than a tree structure, where one begins with the Trunk (Sentence) and then works downwards towards the roots (foundation) of the sentence?
@evanashworth4903 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes, "tree structure" is a funny term because they are more like inverted trees, so calling it a "root structure" might be more accurate; however "root" has its own meaning in linguistics, so I suspect this is why the term "root structure" (referring to tree structures) is not widely used.

Ang natutunan ko sa bidyong ito patungkol sa pagtatalakay sa sintaks o palaugnayan ay kung paano niya detalyadong sinuri at hinimay ang mga halimbawang pangungusap. May mga pangungusap na may kalabuan dahil maaaring ito ay nagtataglay ng dalawang kahulugan. May posibilidad na maiba ang organisasyon ng istruktura ng isang pangungusap batay sa ibig ipakahulugan nito.

I have a question that I am so curious to know its answer , does native English speakers have to study these things at university when they major in English or they already know theses things since there native language is English and do they face difficulties learning them ?!
@evanashworth490 Жыл бұрын
Hi Shahd. This is a great question. I would argue that all native speakers of any language essentially "acquire" the phrase structure rules for the language(s) to which they are exposed rather than explicitly "learn" them. That is, for example, most English speakers probably have never heard of a "determiner" before, but they do know that determiners precede adjectives, which precede nouns. Of course, learning about these sorts of "rules" helps to make that knowledge conscious, but these rules are acquired when we acquire a first language and learned when we learn a second language. I hope that helps!

@evanashworth4902 жыл бұрын
With the very simple tree structures I'm using for these videos, "Grandmother's old album" would be a noun phrase, with "grandmother's" as an adjective, "old" as an adjective and "album" as a noun. I hope that helps!

Excellent classes, Mr Ashworth! Shouldn't you write DP, instead of NP in all cases, for it's a compulsory rule nowadays in modern Syntax? Then, if there's no D, it would be represented by an empty O, with this slash / (like empty in Maths.) Am I okay? BTW, wishing to reach your videos on X bar rules and wh-movements.
