Of course, you most likely couldn't emotionally trust somebody who wrote this song, either -- or one who lives by it. Profound amount of pain in there. Alas, great pain is often required for great art.

I feel the song now even more then before.. 3 days ago it was 2 years ago that my girlfriend passed away, because she had kidney failure. She was only 36, and 1 day later we would have been 6 years together. I still miss her so much. And she knew that she would not survive that kidney disease and said to me that she wanted me to be happy. And ofcourse i would like to get happy, but i wont forget her, she is in my heart forever and always! 🙏❤ Thank you for your lovely reaction. this is perfection... the song... the voice... the video... and Amy is gorgeous! She's ridiculously underrated! But this song is one of the greatest ever of its kind. She actually killed herself this is why she has bandages around her wrists, shes a ghost. This is also why her feet never touch the ground and the kids in the playground don't see her. Its also why she's in white and why she appears in different random places..she's a spirit.

Ben Moody the guitarist, and Amy Lee wrote the song together. It's not dedicated or about anyone but is about dealing with loss in general, about how "their" ghost can linger for a long time after someone important to you dies. However Amy has been quoted saying that it makes her think of her sister and she relates to it in that way when she sings it.

I've suffered sun burn, cuts, broken bones, and a million other injuries, but none of them compare to mental anguish. You can't just put a bandage on it, you can't run from it, and most people either do not believe in it, or they just cannot comprehend it. Nothing in this world hurt me more and than the death of my mother and then my sister a few years later. The pain never goes away, it just dulls, gets manageable. It makes me wonder if this is why the world is so messed up, loss. Good song, speaks to anyone who has ever felt true loss.

This song is almost 20 years old now and came out when I was in my early 20's. It's a song that defiantly hits harder today. Back then, to me it was just a great song by an awesome singer, now it's a very powerful emotional song. I can now relate to the lyrics, but not just towards a specific loss or relationship with someone, but towards my memories, my moments, and my mind. The older we get, the more the memories hurt, not just the sad and/or bad ones, like losing a loved ones, as I have lost both my parents over the last twelve years, but the good ones as well, like having a wonderful childhood, first getting marriage, your children's births and them being young, these memories of life, moments of time, will never be as great as it once was, as certain moments that will never be experienced again like they were when we lived them. My memories, both happy and sad, are slowly killing me as I can't let go and depend on them so much.

The band took the name Evanescence for the underlying core of their music. The Psychological term Evanescence has to do with the fear of the fading and losing your love and memories for a loved one after they die. I lost my son seven years ago and I suffered terribly through the stages of Evanescence. Everyone kept telling me it would get easier and the pain would ease. But to me, that meant my love and memories must fade also. My dad died 50 years ago when i was 17, I can hardly remember him. To me this is a sad and tragic loss; this is Evanescence.
