LET'S GOOOOOO! Not only do we finally get to see Brandon make something from Evangelion, my personal favorite anime and something I've requested before, but it's also one of the most iconic scenes in my opinion. Also, EXCELLENT choice of console to use as size reference. In the show, we actually see Asuka playing a different SEGA console, the SEGA Saturn, but still, it's keeping in the SEGA family. Also, most of the existing Evangelion games were on SEGA consoles (and also PlayStation). Bonus Fact: We see yet another retro game device within Evangelion, this time in the form of the WonderSwan, seen first in the 2.0 movie. The final piece is absolutely incredible. Even with such small sprites, and even while still in the grayscale, those character sprites are nothing short of perfection. You can clearly tell at a glance who is who. Also, those colorful highlights are an odd yet beautiful addition. Certainly something I never would have expected, yet it turned out amazingly and gives the piece just that extra bit of pop. (I particularly love the reflection highlights on the bakelite surrounding the Eva) Hilarious touch adding the infamous mug as an inventory item for Shinji. Also, I'm guessing you watched the Netflix dub, seeing as you used "Third Children" instead of "Third Child." Just one of those weird version differences between dubs. As a huge Eva fan, I'm just thrilled with this piece. The vibrant colors, the stunning character accuracy with so few pixels, the small touches that fans would recognize, it's all just so amazing. I hope some day we can revisit this masterpiece of an anime, hopefully with my personal favorite character, Asuka. (Maybe we can get something like the iconic shot from the End of Evangelion. You know, the one with the giant head?)

I've been a pixel artist for about 6 years now, I don't like doing things the "proper" way, I've always been an against the grain kinda person for whatever reason. So my style and approach and thought pattern has never been consistent or well defined, just chaos until the end result. Yet I always come back to your channel, most of what you do I know I can do to some degree, but because there is structure and some sort of reason or process behind how you go about it, for some reason it makes me REALLY anxious and I don't know why, questioning my own skillset perhaps. However I find myself coming back all the time, perhaps to reaffirm what I know or to provide structure for myself and make the process more enjoyable and not seek solely the end result. I want to be a better pixel artist, and your videos help ground me and help me relearn what I have forgotten or establish order to what I already know.

@BJGpixel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Ah interesting - I'm curious, how to do you tend to approach colouring in your work? Does the greyscale method come into play so you can assess the contrast first?
@WillieArenasRojas2 жыл бұрын
@@BJGpixel the trouble with colour-blindness is not so much the contrast but the hue, which is greatly warped, and the saturation, which is dulled down quite a lot. So I need to use pre-established pallets and I need to actually write down what each color can be used for. Fortunately my wife is an expert in color and she comes to the rescue. I can spend more than an hour prepping the the pallets with her before approaching any sort of work.
@BJGpixel2 жыл бұрын
@@WillieArenasRojas Ah I see, glad you've worked out a system for it, and to have that second opinion too! Might even be cool to release a colourblind-friendly palette you've designed that people could use in their work too. That kind of care and assignment is likely a lot more than most artists would think to do, so it's probably something that gives a unique feel or level of polish. Thanks for the insight. ✨

Brandon! This is amazing. I've been so into this anime recently + revisiting some old top-down RPG favorites and this is really striking all of the right chords for me. Quick question that is pretty... dumb. Haha! How do you organize your windows to have photoshop up and that gallery of reference photos at the bottom? I've been really struggling with that lately as a fellow laptop + trackpad pixel art creator dealing with limited screen space.
@BJGpixel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Haha great timing on this one! :D Haha yes our screen space is at such a premium! To organize the windows, I click and drag the file tab out and it becomes a floating window. From there you can resize it to whatever shape (of rectangle!) you want. The reference images were pre-selected and organized into a strip, so that's just a single image file that you're seeing
@ruolbu2 жыл бұрын
So pretty and very informative. Did you say how long it took you to finish this piece. A lot of your scenes create this desire to play a game like that for real, and I wonder what effort went into just this one image and wonder how that would scale :p

@emmanueloverrated2 жыл бұрын
Really nice work. If you wanted to be more close to the actual limitations, Genesis hardware has only a palette of 512 colors to pick from, and they are evenly spaced on the spectrum... So, First gray is 0x212121, then 0x434343, 0x656565 and so on... you probably guessed the darker the color the less nuances you have to pick from. That was the biggest problem with the color system on that platform and that's why darker games has a lot of problems displaying gracefully! :D

@BJGpixel2 жыл бұрын
I know there are ways to extract a palette from an image (maybe to save it as a colour table) - but to be honest I do that tedious search myself along the lines of what you mentioned; I'll colour pick and drop them onto a new layer using my pencil tool 😅 It doesn't really bother me because this way I can understand exactly which component of the illustration they've been sourced from
