Right at the 32 minute mark in the video, I literally winced at one of the camera shots with Vilk’s limp. Even though he turned out to be okay, who knows what would have happened if he had kept going. Right? After 30 years of outdoor adventures with dogs, I’ve learned they almost never quit. You’re the pack leader and they don’t want to let you down, so need you to make the call for them. You did the right thing.

It's better if Eva puts her safety before Vilk's as if she didn't put her safety first and something does go wrong with Eva, she may not be able to help Vilk. ....It is pretty standard in any kind of survival situation for the person in charge to make sure they are safe first.

In the military when you are hiking with your dog they are trained to hop on top of your backpack to take rests. Maybe train him over the next year to be pulled on the sled, that way you can give him the break he might need but still allow you to make time. Great decision on calling the race. Proud of you both.

My dog and I had been working on climbing all 48 of the 4000 footers in NH, USA together when she injured her knee playing fetch at home on flat ground at sea level. I ended up taking a year off with her from this to get her surgery and do the recovery and physical therapy. I've turned back on many a hike because she wasn't having fun because she was cold or sore or it wasn't safe for her with the weather conditions even though I was fine and WANTED to summit. Their health and safety is always paramount. Every hike we do I end up carrying many pounds of extra weight in safety gear and food for her and it's worth it. The joy she feels on backpacking trips is absolutely worth all the effort it takes to bring her and prepare both of us to do it safely.

@@evazubeckBoth you and your dog are incredible. I’m sorry that you guys ran into trouble, but so pleased that you prioritized well-being. I KNOW part of you thought that he’d be fine were you to continue alone, but I think you honored him by staying by his side. Perhaps he is also a deterrent to wolves? Just because they’re more formidable in ability and numbers doesn’t mean they’re cavalier per being injured. When you first got Vilk, I didn’t know that he’d be able to keep up with you to the extent that he has. That he has the energy to play around in the course of such a trek blows me away. I appreciate that you two are inspiring others in a positive way. The world benefits from your efforts and trade. There are many who contribute in harmful ways and I’ve spent decades studying atrocities and tragedies, as I’m drawn to understand how and why some are capable of doing such damage to lives and property. So I am also drawn to respites and your videos are infectiously pleasant and interesting. I’ve seen enough of your content to know where you stand on faith in God and, though I think it would make you just about perfect, free will is due plenty of respect. I’m so glad that you continue taking on challenges and that you’re doing so with a special companion, the POOCH! Best decision was to get Vilk out of there. My wife and I had made a long drive to make a long hike to a lake. We were more than half the distance to our destination when the two dogs were showing signs of sore paws. They quit walking to keep up, and would stop and lie down. Upon inspection we discovered they had developed blisters that ruptured on their paws. This was after having taken numerous walks on concrete and asphalt. So we cut up our gear bags and used my wife's hair bands to make shoes for them; which we had to periodically had to stop and reposition/fit. Because we couldn't carry two 80 to 100 pound dogs for miles, with our backpacks, and it worked. We returned another time, in another year, and the dogs each had their own set of Vibram-soled hiking boots and we all completed the hike.

Don't ever let anyone say aren't a great dog owner. I have had cattle dogs forever and they never stop. I had one that would ride on anything. 4 wheeler, tractors, backhoes. It just didn't matter. Vilk reminds me of him I have 2 heelers now. One is mean as hell and wants to bite everyone. The other is the sweetest dog I have ever had. ❤

I've been following you for several years. I think that this is your BEST video ever, Eva. I cried a lot, so emotional, seeing you putting Vilk first was so heartwarming, the look on your face on the snow-mobile... so many emotions running through your face in that moment. Just thank you for sharing this raw, amazing, interesting and emotional content. You are truly and excellent story-teller but, what is more important, an excellent human being

As I commented before, winter races are really hard on your body and of course your dog's body, especially paws. Paws tend to ice up and then freeze into a solid mass in winters in northern Ohio or Pennsylvania & New York. Frost bit paws were not uncommon for dogs that spend too much time out doors. ( don't live that far north anymore) It probably was too cold for paw icing at your race location, but winter definitely takes it toll on dog paws. Glad to see that you held up to the cold.

Saying I feel bad or sad would be insignificant. But, I will say you are an adventurous soul, and have the intuition and care to know when to proceed or when to take a different route. Think about your other adventures and the choices you made ... True? You and Vilk accomplished what you set out to do ... another adventure you will always remember in your heart and mind. So to you I say I am over joyed and you did NOT QUIT. Stand up, look up at the sky, and give yourself the biggest hug in the world. Keep going and being you; and know Vilk will be by your side and you will be by his side. Damn good job! Give Vilk a hug from me and my two sentient beings ... they call Dogs. Afterall, we are both sentient beings and animals.

Bless you and Vilk. ❤️🐕 I am an endurance rider, our horses get checked by a vet at every check point of a race, and when the horse doesn't trot "clean" or is dehydrated or the pulse too high, you are eliminated. So I can relate, it's hard sometimes, but the animal comes first. ❤️ Greetings from Canada. 🇨🇦 🐎

What an incredible journey you two went on. To see you at the start with the only dog (that i could see) was emotional. I too have a shepherd and another dog and as difficult as it is to bring them along on adventures, they always bring so much more joy. Granted there are times for adventures without them too, but to know that you are giving and showing vilk the world is such a reward

When you told us about your trip with Vilk. I posted in that video that my dog's vet said it was crazy to put your dog through this, and he said no way, no how a dog could handle such weather for so long because he would have problems with his paws. He was damn right. Thank you for being responsible and quitting the competition.

Psychologists say cruel attacks on strangers online are a very reliable sign of mental illness in modern America and should be seen in that way. These are fearful cowards in a way; hiding behind pseudonyms. They are never honest about who they are, and mostly run and hide when challenged. They often focus their rage on sincerity, success, or prominence. There are no consequences for their cruelty or hatred, which makes them feel powerful and heard. There is no way arguing with these broken people results in any good or resolution. They can’t hear it and can’t stop. They need advanced and continuous health care that they can’t afford and that governments don’t want to pay for.

30:57 - this moment I can see it’s your Ego and your self pattern inside to achieve everything to the extreme. However a dog humbles you big time. 100km is a lot and vilk did incredible. The message is beyond finishing. I’ve had the same ego experience when I fell on a icy rock and couldn’t finish snowdon I felt sooo disappointed but it’s the difference between when ego motivates you or can harm you. Good for you, for checking yourself. And vilk also is like me- my leg can cramp and then your done x
