This movie was planned to be a trilogy with the sequels focusing on Joachim in one and Maria in the other. I really wish the director had gotten to make them.
@Angel120683 жыл бұрын
There has been news about a sequel, No release date for The Book Of Life 2 was provided following the initial conformation, and Gutierrez clarified the sequel would have to wait under he'd completed work on another, then unannounced project. It appears Maya And The Three - which is described as the Mexican Lord Of The Rings - is that secret project, so its unlikely work will start on Book Of Life 2 until the series is released. With that timeframe in mind, it will likely be a few more years until the follow-up arrives.

For the "Joaquin ranting at Maria about his medals" scene, I always interpreted her sarcastic comment as her being miffed that he didn't bother asking her about what SHE likes or what she's done or experienced. She showed him the courtesy of asking him about something he was passionate about and she just wanted him to reciprocate. Like, yeah, she could've just interrupted him and redirected the conversation to herself, but it wouldn't have been the same: she didn't just want to get him to stop talking about himself - she wanted him to show an interest in her and to try and get to know her beyond just 'hey look pretty woman brain go brrr'.

I'm pretty sure Maria is supposed to be a "not like other girls" type of love interest xD The feminist moments are also there because in various parts of México there's sexism even to this day, usually passed from generations of mothers, telling their daughters that they should prepare to be "good wives" when they're older, teaching them how to do all of the chores at home, but i guess it depends on the family too, seeing how the story is set years ago you could say that Maria was ahead of her time (also it may just be me but i really like her sassy moments ) Btw the twin cousins are based on the "adelitas" or "soldaderas", women that helped and fought along the soldiers on the Mexican Revolution!

Yeah! Especially during the time the Spanish conquered there was very much a disparity of women who were able to pursue education. You could really only get away with it if you were a noble or part of the church. I liked this video but tbhh I've seen kids say stuff that are along the lines as the sentences Maria said..we can't underestimate children like that because some are very capable of voicing things like that *especially* when literature is heavily encouraged in childhood. I'm personally glad they made her a feminist figure because sadly as much as I adore my Mexican culture, like every culture, there's a past deeply rooted in sexism.

One of my complains for the movie is that Xibalba and La Muerte don't really do much as "rulers"... Of course they make the plot of the movie happen, but what I mean is The Candlemaker seems to be the one and ONLY in charge of keeping balance between both lands, as well as creating the candles of life that embody each and every living mortal on Earth. While La Muerte and Xibalba don't do anything outside of hanging out with each other, partying and of course place bets. The movie itself doesn't really make clear what exactly do they do outside of that, so as "rulers of lands" they are kind of useless. Nevertheless I love both of them. Their personalities and relationship are very fun to watch!

This might sound kinda stupid to say but i think usually xibalba and la muerte arent supposed to interfere with the living. Omg one of my favorite movies 😭 so underrated 🥺🥺💕 Also in defending of Maria, I feel the historical time of the movie taking place many girls didn't have the privilege to go off and learn about things she did. Maria grew up educated and with a broader horizon on the world. Probably why the other girls didn't understand her new actions. Also she was being 1000% sarcastic as heck with Joaquin when saying how she'd be a loyal housewife, ofc she'd get defensive over his response with how much she's learned what girls can do rather than just be in at home 24/7. It just wasn't for her to be that way. I love her sarcastic and spunky attitude lol. It makes her fun and while it could come off like nOt liKe oTheR giRls, she never once puts down any other girls for knowing what she knows or acts better than them. She just acts as herself! Also this movie came out during the NLOG 2010 era, so while the historical setting of the movie is important, the movie itself could have felt like a product of its time in that regard. I appreciate that Maria herself just did her thing without making a big stink of it (it was more so the townspeople who commented on her independence). And considering the more fantastical elements of the movie format, Maria being OP is understandable. But with other media of the time, some male writers don’t know how to write strong women without comparing them to “other girls”.
@Abigail.Cornudella Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I always liked Manolo more than Joaquin, in the movie Joaquin constantly has the need to talk about himself, like in the scene where Maria asks him about his medals, she was forced to start a conversation for the good of her people, so Maria chose to ask Joaquin about something that interests him like his medals, the normal thing after this should be for Joaquin to start talking about his medals and then ask Maria about something that she is also interested in, but instead of that He keeps talking about himself without showing any interest in what Maria likes and besides that, Joaquin's vision of women is literally "that they cook and pay attention to him" Honestly, Maria was within her right to getting angry about that these actions that joaquin commits are the reason why manolo is the protagonist because even if joaquing's character's backstory is more interesting than manolo's, his personality it is not and it can come off as really annoying for a certain part of the viewers including me.

It's nice to hear someone agrees with me about Maria's behavior. I love this movie and the characters but I feel like the excessive modern feminism in many movies is pushed too far and it makes the female characters come off as really rude instead of independent. Maria misleading Monolo and Joaquin (lemme know if I spelled those wrong) is pretty uncalled for in my opinion. She really isn't giving them a very fair chance. Hey, sometimes guys just need a push in the right direction. If they'd shown more of her side of things while growing up, like maybe the school she ended up going to was really focused on teaching the girls that they're only there to love men (objectifying women, etc), then maybe her behavior would actually make sense. Anyway, just really appreciated that you acknowledged it :)

OMG OMG OMG- I’ve loved The Book of Life ever since I was little, and this is the first time I’ve seen someone on KZbin talk about it! It was honestly such a comfort movie growing up, and I also agree that it irked me when people said it ripped off Coco. I mean, yes they have similar premises, but it’s the same with any holiday based film. If anything I’m glad Dia De Muertos is beginning to be seen more. Really the only thing I didn’t like when it comes to the two movies, is that The Book of Life didn’t get as much recognition when compared to Coco (I mean Disney is bound to get more attention, but still). I think it’s such a fun movie, with all of the different textures, colors, and characters, so I’m glad it seems to be getting more attention. I do pretty much agree on all of the points you made when talking about the characters. I also wish we got to see more of Juaquin, since it seemed he had a very compelling story that we sadly didn’t really see throughout the movie. And I always thought Maria was cool when I was a kid (since I didn’t see many girl characters who were both active and feminine growing up), but I do agree that a bunch of her dialogue seems to be confusing, and pretty much giving mixed signals. But still, I honestly find the movie so charming, and I’m glad you also enjoyed it!

They give hints that this is a little ways in the past compared to where the museum scene is. Also, though I agree with you on much of Maria's character, I think because it was 2013 many female leads/protagonists suffer from being that strange middle ground of she's a girl but she's not like the other girls. She's a rare case for me though since she was actually kinda likable. Love Manolo and Joaquin, their interactions are amazing and it really feels like two people who have known each other their whole lives and still care for each other. Also, it seems like the grandmother wasn't disappointed in him cause of the Bull killing and not doing it, but I think it was because he didn't seem proud to stand up for/be himself. Also, his interactions with his opera singing cousin was amazing for me. Loved his family.

Oh god the 2013 “not like other girls” era was a pretty dark time for me. My thinking was so warped and dichotomous (not to mention internally misogynistic), partly because of these types of role models and messages being peddled in the media. To say the least I did not like the person I was back then

I saw this movie years before Coco so when Coco came out, I was like "hmmm that's familiar 🧐" And then I actually watched it and realized that while there were some similar themes and parallels (especially the guitar aspect), it's better to have more variety than another suburban Christmas movie. Also I can't get over the unique wooden figurine modeling 👏😫

@@Pelican07.23that’s true. I can appreciate Maria’s complexity a bit more now that I’m viewing the movie through different lenses. I saw Book of Life in theaters, and it was fantastic. I love how well it puts Jorge Gutierrez's art style into a 3D style, having been introduced to his work through El Tigre (side note: you'll find a few El Tigre characters in the group shot in the 2D animated segment, just before the churros gag). There are some significant parallels between Book of Life and Coco - they both feature a young man from Mexico who dreams of becoming a singer and guitarist in direct opposition to the career path their family has chosen for them and winds up traveling to the land of the dead. That being said, they both take this unusually simple premise in entirely different directions. Much like "a comic strip about a fat cat, dopey dog, and their flaky owner" could describe both Garfield and Get Fuzzy. If you liked Book of Life, keep an eye out for Jorge Gutierrez's next project, Maya and the Three. :-)

when my sister was in collage at an art school there was going to be a premier of this movie in a theater near by. The coolest part was that the creator/director was going to be there to talk about the film and answer questions afterwards. She was lucky enough to be able to go since one of her professors managed to get seats for his students. She told me it was amazing and hearing about the production of the film, behind the scenes information and secrets from the director himself was an wonderful experience for her. I know Coco and Book of Life aren't the same movies but...I remember watching book of life first and loving it, then I watched coco and immediately forgot about it the moment I turned off the dvd. It felt more like another disney trope movie (I'm not hispanic though so I can't tell much on the holiday matter), while BoL felt...different? I think what made me enjoy BoL are the characters: they're more "human", they got flaws and all but I kinda liked them a lot more! Joachim was supposed to be the rival but he is more sympathetic than he is and still is a friend to Manolo despite all their "rivalry" so to speak, and Manolo is the one who wants to follow his dream even if it means going against everything (a bit tropey I guess, but it makes his apology song all the more powerful) And I liked that there are no real villains! Okay sure Chakal is technically a villain and he comes at the end but I never found him to be the "bad guy", he felt more of a plot device for the climax. I guess Xibalba could be the villain but even at the end La Muerte and Xibalba are still on good terms, because they can't exist without each other. I just...like this "grey factor" more, because sometimes it's not about "who's good and who's evil" but "who's likable or not". And I really liked the characters there so much more!

I loved it. I was only like 8 years old. also there is so much more similar between coco and the book of life than just hispanic culture lmao. but after coco came out my entire culture became that to americans. i remember on dia de los muertos the year coco came out I dressed up and like three people said “oh are you dressed as coco?” it was a horrible experience that made me revert back to that isolation I felt when i was a kid.

Furthermore, in Jorge's new netflix series, "Maya and the Three", actually has a lore connection to Book of Life via La Muerte and Xibalba's wedding! @tsnophaljakarax99632 жыл бұрын
For me, the best part of the movie was the two deity figures, La Muerte and Xibalba. For me, both seem pretty much like perfect depictions of god characters that you rarely see in a lot of modern stories. They could have easily made La Muerte the perfect morally good deity while Xibalba would be the obvious villainous god, kinda like what they did to Hades in Disney's Hercules. But instead, while both are opposites, both sorta see humans as beneath them and bet on their lives just for fun, and Xibalba, even though he can be cruel and cold-hearted, isn't evil, and you can kinda see where he's coming from. And when Manolo proves himself with the bull fight test, Xibalba actually respects him and even aids him. In a way, this makes him fill more rounded as a deity figure than just some generic evil dude. (also, the romance between him and La Muerte is adorable, and I love the contrast of a cute skeleton lady and a sticky tar devil boi being madly in love with each other XD)
