Well, as a plumber did 945 $US of work on our sink faucets yesterday morning, I binge-watched old Everard Jct. videos with a miniature chihuahua on my lap. And here I am, watching another and enjoying it immensely. I must say that I am impressed not only by your skills, but also by your willingness to take a section of layout and completely rework it to better represent your vision. I consider you and the Dean Park guy to be the spiritual UK descendants of John Allen and his Gorre & Dapheted. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Amazing as usual, Richard. The none-stop action of a busy main line! Too late now, I think, as it doesn't seem you have the pointwork to support it, but I think the branch line would have been absolutely perfect for that big tanker train you have. I can just picture those tanks snaking their way over the points and down through the brush to some imaginary refinery somewhere in the distance. Oh well, local passenger services it is then. You definitely need a cheeky Pacer screaming along those tight curves. The passengers will be thrilled! All the best. Mike.

The train was a concept built in the 70's as a gas turbine powered high speed tilting train called the APT-E (Advanced Passenger Train - Experimental), never saw mainline service though, more of a proof of concept. The real train is in the national rail museum in the UK. This model was a start point for Rapido trains in the UK market and proved to be interesting to model, the nose cone was 3D scanned to ensure an accurate replica was made. I do believe Everard junction also did a review of the model when it came out in 2015-16 time so it might have some more information there. Hope this helps!

WARNING: I don't recommend the Peco 3rd rail pots ! I quickly discovered they are highly prone to damage during track cleaning, even though I had superglued them in place. I therefore use Peco's little brass nails, every fourth sleeper. Having tapped them almost into place, I then add a little blob of solder on the head. I then heat the rail with the iron, so it sinks into the blob. This give a pretty good impression of the real life china pot. The rail used is Peco's recommended code 60 bullhead rail. Last, finally adjust the height of the nails. The 3rd rail in real life was only 3 inches (1mm in OO scale) higher than the running rail. 3rd rail ends at pointwork needed a 6-9 inch drop (2 - 3 mm bent downwards over roughly 20mm of length in OO). Due to the fact British OO scale actually runs on HO 16.5mm track this presents a slight problem for the distance between running rail & 3rd rail. I settled on 4mm which seems to give the "right look" !!! As you are airbrush weathering your track, like me, this will hide the shiny brass rails. 3rd rail if you examine the real thing, gets covered in carbon shoe black crud. EMU shoes as a result get thinner and thinner as they wear out. The 3rd rail in reality is NOT fixed to the supporting pots, it simply sits in a "U" shaped metal support which itself is moulded into the head of the china pot. Which is why whenever trains derail the 3rd rail usually get tipped into the ballast with a few large flashes ! Technical info about shoes on real EMU's. Up until BR days EMU shoes were simply sprung metal skates. Due to the arcing they caused and a number of shoes welding themselves to the 3rd rail, BR changed to carbon shoes from around 1948. There were two methods of ensuring shoes stayed pressed to the flat 3rd rail surface. All EMU's up until the 1964 Brighton line 4CIG/4BIG's had heavy wooden shoe beams usually on the outer end bogies of 2 & 4 car types. The shoe was hung from this wooden beam with a downwards pressing spring. Hence 3rd rail ends had to be bent lower than the lowest extent of a hanging shoe. From 1964 the method was changed to what is called a Height Limiting Bar. So instead of a heavy wooden beam, there is now a slimmer insulated bar, which only prevents the shoe from rising any higher. But the Shoe is NO longer attached at this point. Instead each shoe is hung on the end of a long bar emanating from the bogie centre. It's lowest droop is therefore now more reliably limited to an exact lowest drop point. This also allowed a reduction in the amount of 3rd rail end drop necessary. Oddball stock: 4REP power pack units with 3,200hp had 4 motor bogies in a 4 car set, with shoes on all 4 bogies and 2 shoes per bogie side not the usual 1. Class 73/0 & 73/1 Electro Diesels have retractable shoes. Two on each bogie side. The shoes are fixed to the end of short sprung arms, which are themselves hinged at the inner end, and require a small electric motor to lift them. This is necessary for 2 reasons. First to avoid hanging shoes bashing rail ends as these locos were designed to go places where they was no 3rd rail, such as goods yards. Secondly when used on P.Way trains in areas where track workers were relaying track, the 3rd rail is switched off. But if a Class 73 bridges the gap between a live section and a dead section it could fry the workers who often sat on the 3rd rail !!!! Specially for "Everard Junction" as you are doing NSE era. There was a withdrawn Class 33 used as a special test vehicle to test the retractable shoes to be used on the Eurostar Channel tunnel sets. The loco was fitted with Eurostar type bogies and retractable shoes. These had to be specially designed, because in France 3rd rail shoes could interfere with the French Automatic Warning system and upset their signalling, because they place the responder boxes right next to one of the running rails. The Class 33 as far as I can remember had its engine removed to reduce weight for these tests, so had to be dragged around by another locomotive. It was a frequent sight around Clapham Junction, and even got shipped to France by the train Ferry (before the tunnel itself was complete) for final testing, to satisfy SNCF ! Hope that helps all 3rd rail modellers. Happy modelling.
