“George Mallory was the first person to summit Mt. Everest.” Well, they were spotted high on the mountain the day they disappeared but there is no official record of that summit. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are still have first official summit of Mt. Everest.

This. Mallory's story is great and tragic, and I tend to believe he and Sandy Irvine fell on their way down, but Hillary and Norgay were officially the first...

Yes, Hillary & Tenzing were first on Everest. Andy Van Bergen made many factual errors in his interview with Phil. I did my initial Everesting bike rides in 1994, so before climbing Everest in May 1995. In 1994 I was working full time. Andy refused to bring his factual errors to Phil, which is direspectful and disappointing.
@jas_n4 жыл бұрын
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but one of the few rules of everesting is that you need to do it on a "full ascent"... "- Rides must be full ascents each time (Strava segments or the accepted ‘traditional’ climbing route will generally be the best guide for this. You can’t commit to a combination of full and half laps). Acceptable is a shorter segment of a climb if it is recognised in its own right. If in doubt, ask."

Ideally you would have a PLS set control beforehand of your specified route. You can also have PLS/GISP analyze the data in post (which you did). My prediction, as Strava gets more competitive, you're going to see more controversy over records. GPS error such as drift and multi-path on recreational watches and computers are enough to affect official results down to 1 to 2 seconds. Only a Professional Land Surveyor can legally certify time and location. Official Survey Grade GPS equipment is very expensive and very heavy.

If you really want accuracy, there are specialist GPS units that average many readings over time to get centimetre accurate positioning. GIS is a good starting point, but unless the exact point has been surveyed you are relying on interpolated data not an actual measurement. I am looking forward to the rest of the series

Know everyone is different, please explain: it seems every pro that Phil associates with has an undersized frame with oversized stem and extreme seat height to dropbar angle. I get the "Aero" explanation but that has been disproven by diminished returns in lung capacity limited VO2 more importantly virtually all TT disciplines from Sprint to Ironman Triathlon having upward bend aerobars and multiple spacers so why the disconnect with Roadbikes? The one exception I have realized is Floyd Landis who rode stem with spacers and positive angle. Discuss...thx
