Evergreen content on KZbin is a way to catch three birds with on stone. Evergreen videos can do well in the Search, Home, and Suggested Videos at the same time. To show you how important this is, I studied 4000 channels and 34000 of their top performing videos. Is that a KZbin algorithm hack?
---
On this channel I want to give you the knowledge and insights to simplify your KZbin growth journey. Expect tutorials as well success stories of other KZbin creators - all aimed towards giving you practical growth strategies.
I host a Morningfame Q&A live stream every month. Keep an eye out for the scheduled events. Simplifying KZbin growth one question at a time.
Cheers, Nico

Hi Ian, have the formation of an idea for a collab with you on licensing, fair usage & strikes, if you'r interested. Background concept, musician Roger posts his own song #PLIM and receives a copyright strike from the record label (me). In his outrage, he reaches out for legal advice and he finds out he has fallen foul of most of the pitfalls. And is the victim of unscrupulous business practices. Have a think about it, if you think this is something worth considering, it would be good to hear from you. Cheers . Luke

Thanks for all of this information... have you thought about doing a study on translations and captions? How does translating your video adjust the way the algorithm works?
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
My pleasure Abby! I once did a study about closed captions in your original language - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZWtamqbpNRkncU - but I did not look into the aspect of having translations. But at least I can tell that the channel “Zap zockt” - I talk about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3PUnZuOnpKZpbs - can see an increase of viewers watching his videos with a foreign language CC turned on. I also see that with my few own videos where I added e.g. Spanish CC. All you need to do is to make sure that your CC in the original language is error free - you may edit the few mistakes in the automatically generated closed captions - and then you can add a new language via KZbin Studio, select to create new closed captions, and then use the Autotranslate feature. This is the quickest way to create them and then you can check your analytics to see how much it is used by your viewers.

Nico when you referr to "Evergreen" are you suggesting that they are global trending topics or videos that have performed well over time at your own channel?
@Morningfame

Evergreen are global topic in a sense. But not trending topics. Trending would be something that is e.g. currently in the news and after some time not interesting to people anymore. Evergreen topics are topics that people want to know about all the time. Like how to tie a tie, how to do certain things in Photoshop etc. Timeless things. And of course if you do it right then those video are indeed performing well on your channel for a long time. The evergreen video that I showed from my channel for example is driving views for over a year now.

I've been scouring KZbin & searching google for information about varied video lengths and if they hurt the channel. This is an amazing topic that we've not seen any stats on, but I think could make a huge impact. For example: Can a channel upload how to videos that are about 6 minutes long, and also have vlogs stye videos that are about an hour long? Our audience loves both formats. Will this affect "positive watch time"? Would love to see the data/numbers behind this. Does a channel need to be consistent in the length of the video or stay within a specific watch time to "please" the youtube watch time algorithm? When we upload a shorter video after a long video, all numbers turn red even if the new shorter video has great watch percentage. Thank you for your fantastic content!
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! I‘ll see what I can do. The tricky things will be, however, to extract an insight because the video length itself is a very weak factor. In your particular case you mention that your viewers enjoy the particular videos topics of your two formats. The video topic is imho a much stronger factor than the video length. Well, let‘s see!
@huskysquad
@huskysquad 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It would be great to see this data. I even contacted google YT support to inquire about this, but they gave me a super vague answer and suggested that I simply focus on “keeping my viewers watching.”
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, that makes sense. Please don’t get your hopes up. The video length just plays a minor role at best. What really matters is the average view duration. Of course, if the video is too short then the average view duration is limited by that. But high average view duration is mostly dependent on your skill to keep viewers interested while they watch your video.
@huskysquad
@huskysquad 5 жыл бұрын
Morningfame yes I understand that part. What I mean is how the dashboard completely turns red and in the negative after I upload a short video right behind a long video. The percentage of watch time can be very similar, but the watch time itself goes down dramatically therefore causing all the numbers to look red on that new video on the the dashboard tile. The true question is: if it all turns red, does that mean it’s a automatic “negative” by KZbin. So for example, say my viewers watched 25 min of my one hour videos. In the new short video of 9 minutes long, they can’t possibly watch more than 9 minutes which is a HUGE drop in watch time and average view duration (both numbers displayed on the dashboard) . Get where I’m going?
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
I see. In that case we have to talk about your average view duration instead of the video length. Obviously, the video length limits how long you average view duration can get but we know that KZbin looks at the average view duration. Indeed, it turning red makes us wonder. In general, that is not necessarily a bad sign. For KZbin’s algorithms it’s all relative. Meaning that your video competes with similar videos and the average view duration is used to determine which videos wins - i.e. ranks higher, gets recommended more often. Thus there is no average view duration that you need to reach. You just have to be better than the competition. Now, you have these two video formats which not only differ in video length and average view duration but also in the topics you cover there. Since those videos are about different topics, they naturally compete with different videos. So the big question is with which videos they actually compete. Your videos on your channel certainly don’t compete with each other. So a drop in average view duration doesn’t matter as long as the shorter videos compete with videos from other channels that have a similar average view duration. Ideally the other channel’s videos have a lower average view duration of course.

I have a question: what types or characteristics of videos make them BOTH evergreen AND SEO achievable? I'm guessing that the non-SEO evergreen videos are the sort of titles that would be made specifically for the suggested and home algorithms, ie they don't answer questions or address 'how-to' topics, but they trigger curiosity on the part of your target audience for your channel. Is that right? By SEO-achievable, do you mean simply videos made for search traffic? Or are there other qualities of videos that make them search-friendly? I have just done some research on channels (both large channels, and smaller ones) and their top-performing titles/thumbnails that would appeal to my target audience. So I plan to produce a smaller portion of my videos for suggested (aimed at my subscribers as they grow, these videos will 'teach' my audience the sort of video I want to make and allow me to test what works), and the majority for evergreen search. I learned from a previous video of yours, that educational channels (compared to entertainment channels) will always have a higher volume of traffic from the search algorithm, so the plan would be to continue looking for evergreen searchable topics... so any advice on what this means would be useful!
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 3 жыл бұрын
Great question buddy! “Evergreen” is a characteristic of the video. It means that the video topics caters to an interest that viewers have that lasts for a long time. People will always be interested certain things. On the other side of the spectrum we have trends that are of high interest only for a short time. Much of what you see in the news for example. So if you create an evergreen video then this means that there will always be people who are interested in watching it. But that is independent of how people actually find the video. They can find it through search or through the recommendation on their home screen for example. And to make sure that people do find your evergreen video we use strategies like KZbin SEO to make the video come up in the search results. Naturally KZbin Search is most of the times about questions that people ask. In any way, I recommend that you browse through possible search terms to get an understanding of what people are looking for using these techniques: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXXIdaacncx8hZI
3 жыл бұрын
You’re genius! Thank you for all your research and insight. Is a SEO of 85 good enough or should I aim for 100, even if this means that my text in the description get’s really weird? I have a dilemma with my tags: often I write two versions of the same tag: one with correct orthography (with the accents in Spanish) and one with not so correct orthography (without the accents) because sometimes it seems that the incorrect version of the search term is searched more, according to tube buddy. So then half of my tags I usually don’t use in my description because it would be strange to repeat myself and one time include a tag with the correct orthography in my text, and then again without the accents... But this has a negative effect on my SEO, because I have a bunch of tags just sitting there in the tag box that do not appear in my description.
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely my pleasure buddy! If you talk about the SEO score that TubeBuddy gives you then I couldn’t say. But in Morningfame you have a grading that answers that: If you get a B grade or better for Relevance then you are good to go. Yes, that way of adding tags is a good idea to explain KZbin the different spelling variants. And you shouldn’t include all your tags in your description anyway. Doing so is called “tag stuffing” and is not allowed by KZbin.

Thanks a lot for your support Clair! I certainly know that watch time can add up in this case and you could e.g. produce a 200% view percentage. But that most likely only happens if you rewatch it straight away while you are on the watch page of the video. If you watch the same video e.g. on the next day then most likely another view is created.

@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually very common that only a small portion of the videos of a channel really take off. You can actually see that as a plus that you made some of them that amazingly successful! However, you wonder for a good reason nonetheless. What you are possibly missing is to foster an active subscriber base who keeps coming back to watch each and every new video that you upload. That is actually also very important to trigger the algorithms and thus the bigger your active subscriber base gets, the more likely your videos can take off. I talked about this in more detail here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnrGl2udr8-sZ7M

Good point! The series approach that comes more natural for gaming channels is really a great way to keep subscribers active on a channel. But indeed, with so many new subs you should do better. That said though, in gaming people are much more willing to subscribe than in other niches. But just as your reference, across niches I measured that keeping 10% of your total subscriber count active is actually a very strong performance. In your case that would equate to 533 views from subscribers with each new video that you upload. So you are not too far from that.

@@Morningfame you are extremely helpful. Thank you so much. I know I have some subscribers that I often speak with in the comments time and time again, and even play with them in the game. It seems very random how many views I get. I know a lot of my content gets more views later down the line because I do videos about certain quests in the game. I know not all people will need to watch every video straight away if they don't need to do that quest yet. I have changed my thumbnails recently which has helped a little with daily views. But I can't quite find what it is that makes them want to watch the daily videos as one video gets say 300 views in a 24hr period, and another of the same sort of thing gets 50. So it's all trial and error
@Morningfame

@@RiverFox_YT Indeed, it is trial and error unless of course you can copy from very similar channels what they learned in their trial and error. But that’s not bad. It is a process of figuring out what makes people keep coming back. You have a great mindset in this regard. Keep it up!

Evergreen content is great for educators. Creators who focus on trends and gear reviews must strike while the iron is hot because their content quickly become dated. // I am an educator, so I will definitely focus on creating evergreen content, so I hit the KZbin birds with one keyword stone 🤣
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, with one keyword stone. ;) Indeed, for trends the timing is crucial. But I would say all channels can do videos at any point in the spectrum. In entertainment e.g. the #24HoursChallenge started as a trend but is lasting for a long time. In any way, evergreen truly builds up channels to get sustained views.

Well hello my friend. It's about time. 💪💪💪. Time to learn. Welcome back. I have a question.. how can I make evergreen videos when I want o make comedy videos? Is there a way to combine both?
@Morningfame
@Morningfame 5 жыл бұрын
Great question Yonnel! Exactly. Like Lewis says, everything that fits a search term that people search all the time, is evergreen-worthy. Top lists, references to classics like Laurel und Hardy, or even doing parodies on non-humorous topics which you tend to actually already do. Btw, to see if a search term is evergreen-worthy you can actually use Google Trends. In Morningfame’s keyword tool you can click the “Further Analysis...” button in step #3 to go there quickly and check if the search term has an all time high in the past year.

That is a very interesting thought! But I think there is a distinct difference between the survivor bias and finding out which strategies work on KZbin. There are many factors that make a video successful. And with looking at the successful videos, we can identify what they have in common and therefore identify what could have caused their success. For that, we don’t need to look at the not successful videos because they don’t represent a blind spot like in the survivor bias. The only thing that the not successful videos can teach us is that a certain strategy is not the cause of a successful video’s success. My approach here - I didn’t mention that in the video - is to cross-reference it with information we officially got from KZbin so that it backs up the conclusions that I make. One very important piece of input is this paper from Google engineers: ai.google/research/pubs/pub45530

@@Morningfame what if you will find out that all failed viedos has THE SAME factors as successfull? Do you know this 100% thta they are different? If no - you need to research. Because what makes others fail works 90% of time. If you will find that it proves your point of view - Excellent. But what if not? You may be the next to fail. The other thing. Instruments serves not the purposes the majority thinks. Recomendations working not for those who majority thinks of. It is RPODUCERS )))) He he he You missing the whole system man. KZbin is not only about views. It is about producing. So recomendations influence producers more to produce content. What am i saying - the world is always about to trick you. You are totally right and I get what you mean. But the whole premise of this video is to look at videos that drive a constant amount of views each day. The videos that I excluded just don’t do that. That said, I’ll keep an eye out to not accidentally forget about a possible blind spot.
