My thoughts on these 2 albums. Folklore opened up another path after drawing inspiration from fictional and autobiographical characters and tied it all together with her own life experience. Evermore gave us closure. It was like arriving to the conclusion that everything happens for a good reason even if the memory hurts you and therefore it's an integral part of who you are. She talks a lot about trains and ships in this one and so I'm inclined to say that her journey on this new road has just begun. So, all I can say is I was Wonderstruck by Folklore and it was so Enchanting to hear Evermore after that. EVERY BAIT AND SWITCH WAS A WORK OF ART 🤗 Great video as always. ✌❤

That song is my favorite from the album. I have always said it and will continue to say it, I do not like country music. However, i like how Taylor is teasing me by producing a song that walks a very thin line between folk and country. I see why people think it is a country song, but I don't get country from this song. It is very folk-ballad with country touches. Marcus, when he came in on the second chorus, I was like, wow. It took the song to another level.

Thank you for taking the liberty of calling out how that envy of wanting to love someone and having to compete with others for that love in Gold Rush. This song broaches a kind of covetousness that only ensues when one falls for another person that is so well-received by others, that deeming the self worthy of wanting them garners competition. And that’s awful! Because the mind starts playing tricks on the self! Taylor said “My mind turns your life into folklore,” meaning she daydreams about what it would be like to be lost in love with that person they want so bad, to the point where it’s more of an obsession than a happy crush, but there is an awareness of an unwillingness to commit to that attraction profanely by confusing the worth of the self versus that of whoever else might want and deserve the reciprocation of that love more.

ok so this is the way I perceive the story for evermore... Evermore - the story of Dorothea. dorothea - This song is from the perspective of Dorothea’s child hood best friend from back home. Dorothea left her home town to go and Pursue a career in LA (probably as an artist) So this is just her friend singing to her about the old times before she left and the line ‘Ooh, you'rе a queen sellin' dreams, sellin' makeup and magazines Ooh, from you, I'd buy anything’ States that she is a successful business woman. And the rest of the song is reminiscing on old times. ‘tis the damn season - Dorothea has returned to her how town for the Christmas break and left her career in LA for the time being. She is akwanted by an old flame and sort of starts to rekindle the old relationship and throughout the Christmas Period she spends a lot of time with the old flame. They admit they are both in love with each other and she never stopped feeling this passion for this person when she left but she wanted to pursue her career and that meant leaving this person behind. It’s pretty much summed up in this verse Sleep in half the day just for old times' sake I won't ask you to wait if you don't ask me to stay So I'll go back to L.A. and the so-called friends Who'll write books about me if I ever make it And wonder about the only soul Who can tell which smiles I'm fakin' And the heart I know I'm breakin' is my own To leave the warmest bed I've ever known We could call it even Even though I'm leaving And I'll be yours for the weekend 'Tis the damn season No body, no crime - This song is pretty self explanatory but Dorothea meets up with her friend Este every Tuesday night for dinner and wine. Este confides in Dorothea about her husband cheating and she tells her she is going to confront him. She confronts him which results in Him murdering her , he soon moved his mistress into his house where him and Este once lived. Dorothea then kills the husband to seek revenge for him killing her best friend, but it looks to be as if the mistress was the one who killed him, because she took out his life insurance. Therefore, Dorothea got away with his murder. marjorie - I couldn’t really find anywhere to particularly fit this song into the story seen as it’s about Taylor’s grandmother. gold rush - The start of gold rush is Dorothea falling in love with a man whom she knows but everybody seems to want him too, resulting in her becoming jealous but trying to make herself not fall in love with him anymore. ‘I can’t dare to dream about you anymore’ cowboy like me - She starts to get closer to the guy in gold rush after he actually starts to show an interest in her too, they realise they have a lot in common and share life stories with each other becoming really close. willow - Willow is about her and the ‘cowboy’ being in love with each other. And then following each other no matter the distance or darkness. ivy - Ivy leads me to believe that we are setting this story in the early 1900s and Dorothea is in an arranged marriage with somebody whom she doesn’t love and she just wants to be with the cowboy and has promised to him that they will be together one day, she is having an affair. Clover blooms on the fields, Spring breaks loose, the time is near, what woods he do if he found us out? Crescent moon, coast is clear Spring breaks loose, but so does fear He’s gonna burn this house to the ground , hows one to know? I’d love and die for moments that we stole, On begged and borrowed time, so tell me to run Or dare to sit and watch what we’ll become, And drink my husbands wine. But when she says husband they aren’t actually married, but at this time she is planning on going along with the arranged marriage. champagne problems - The arranged marriage starts to take place by her boyfriend arranging a nice day for him to propose, using his mother’s wedding ring. Dorothea comes to her senses and Denys the proposal. But doesn’t call off the relationship. ‘Your moms ring in your pocket’ ‘You’re heart was glass, I dropped it’ ‘She would’ve made such a lovely bride, what a shame she’s fucked in the head’ tolerate it - Although Dorothea Denys the proposal she continues to stay with the same man, instead of leaving him for the ‘cowboy’. She tries to force herself to love him which results in him falling out of love with her after her denying the proposal. ‘I know my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it’ happiness - She is coming to the realisation that neither of them are in love With each other, so why continue to stay? ‘Tell me, when did your winning smile, become a smirk?’ She starts to talk about his future wife, ‘I hope she will be a beautiful fool, Who takes my spot next to you, No I didn’t mean that, Sorry, I can’t see facts through all of my fury, You haven’t met the new me yet’ She’s trying to change and make herself fall in love with him despite not wanting to be with him still, she’s doing it for his sake and his happiness. ‘There’ll be happiness after you, But there was happiness because of you, Both of these things can be true’ She is lying when she says there was happiness because of you, proving so when saying that it can be true, meaning she can make herself fall in love with him and be happy with him evermore - She is singing about how she was convinced she would live out her life and die in this arranged marriage being unhappy, ‘I thought this pain would be evermore’ She never thought it would end. In all the denial she knows that both of them will one day be happy without the satisfaction of each other, but she’s going to leave. ‘Can't not think of all the cost And the things that will be lost Oh, can we just get a pause? To be certain, we'll be tall again’ She ends the song by leaving the arranged relationship. ‘This pain wouldn't be for evermore Evermore’ coney island - She’s left the man whom she was arranged to be with, And has now gone to her real lover, the cowboy. But after making him wait for her for so long to leave the other relationship, he has started to fall out of love with her. ‘Break my soul in two looking for you But you're right here If I can’t relate to you anymore, Then who am I related to?’ This throws back to the song cowboy like me, where they realised they had a lot in common, but now after the long time period, almost all is lost and they’ve grown apart. ‘Sorry for not making you my centerfold’ She apologies for not leaving the other guy sooner and making the cowboy her main priority. The National is singing from the arranged marriages mans point of view about her and the cowboys relationship being ruined and he feels like it’s his fault. ‘You were too polite to leave me’. ‘Did I leave you hanging everyday?’ ‘Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest grey’ closure - Is almost a conversation. ‘Yes I got your letter, ‘Yes I’m doing better’ It’s almost bittersweet. The narrator of the song can’t stand that the ex is still mad but they keep reaching out with letters to try to find out what went wrong between them trying to get closure for the both of them. But is refused. ‘I don’t need your closure’ ‘I’m fine with my spite’ ‘It cut deep to know ya’ long story short - Dorothea is singing about how unhappy she was in the arranged marriage but now that she is with the cowboy, she is all about him. ‘Long story short, it was a bad time’ Long story short, it was the wrong guy’ ‘Now I’m all about you’ ‘My waves met your shore, Ever and evermore’ ‘He feels like home’ ‘Long story short I survived’ She’s singing about the struggle of the past arranged relationship it has found her way with the cowboy and everything is made up for, They manage to get back on track and she is now finally happy with the right guy’ This is the way I perceive the album, I can’t wait to fit the bonus tracks into the story!!

People really criticized closure cause of the instrumentals. I think its perfect for a song called closure, cause even though its the one thing most people want (the piano), there is a bitter edge (the drums and such) like I wish I didnt have to grt closure, I wish it didnt have to happen. I really love the clash there. Also yea haha i definitely took a deep breathe half way through evermore, once it took on a positive note I felt like I could breathe easier.
