@EinDose3 жыл бұрын
The GBA actually kinda WASN'T impressive, which makes a lot of those games even more interesting. It was roughly comparable to a Super Nintendo, if not slightly below it because of a lower resolution (although that could be a benefit for performance, too); what changed was that the technology and expertise being used to make the games were ten years ahead, so developers could make better use of stuff like Mode 7, voxels, and mapping 3D models to sprites.

@@frozenpancakes SNES was a 16bit system while the GBA was a full fledged 32 bit one. The underlying hardware is different as 6502 family wasn't used (and I don't think WDC makes a 32-but CPU), but instead the GBA runs on an ARM professor (in addition to having the Z80 based CPU for backwards compatibility). If I recall correctly, the SNES had a PPU (think GPU), while the GBA didn't. While that did reduce the cost of the GBA, it put extra strain on the CPU. Long story short, it is technically more powerful than the SNES, but I'd be lying if it wasn't commonly thought of as portable one (and for the longest time I thought the same as well).

@BillyBob-xx5jr3 жыл бұрын
To be fair about the "too ambitious," thing, it's fairly reasonable for a studio to be hesitant when a game has such lofty ideas, especially for a handheld. Most studios would rather publish or approve games that have fairly achievable expectations, that are almost guaranteed to release in at least a state fairly similar to originally planned, insead of approving a game that could possibly crumble thanks to wanting too much, or come out haphazard as key features had to be cut due to expense/limitations, leading to the rest of the game suffering.
@Forever_Zero3 жыл бұрын
@@BillyBob-xx5jr yeah, you're completely right, and the fact that the videogame industry is just an industry is the saddest part, It's a very personal opinion, but that's why I appreciate indie games more than triple A games, you can notice when a game has a heart and a soul, there's a great difference, with this I mean that a lot of games, Call Of Duty for example, are just like an ultra processed product guaranteed to sell millions with the same formula, and the little guys who take risks and want to make the game of their dreams, just can't compare to them in the market, it's just sad, but yeah, it's the way this works

I never realized the GBA was capable of actual 3D graphics. Though I'm really not feeling most of the ones shown here, I think a bright and colorful style and tone would have meshed better with the primitive 3D rather than almost everything going for a gritty realistic look. Imagine a 3D Mario game on GBA. There was a Mario Kart tech demo that came way after Super Circuit (it used artwork from Double Dash) and seemed to employ a more complex 3D engine. Sadly the person who owns the prototype doesn't want to dump it :(

"a bright and colorful style and tone would have meshed better with the primitive 3D rather than almost everything going for a gritty realistic look." Yeah, some of these games look amazing for the GBA, but they become really difficult to follow when everything is grey or brown. It feels like people didn't think it through until they could see a demo of it, which is probably when they realised it wouldn't work and it would have been too late to change the whole idea. You can see some of the racing games look decent with something like a red and white car on a black road with green landscapes, for example. The 3D titles and mode seven style segments definitely need obvious colour contrasts so you can see what's going on with the available graphics quality.

Knowing some of the crappy games that actually end up going through with production, it’s sad to see some of these promising titles canceled, especially when they’re mostly finished.

Great video! Personally, I'd love a video on cancelled Wii games. I know there are a lot of cancelled oddballs on there

“Is this footage from the project they’re talking about or an entirely different game?” I repeat this question about every ten seconds on these canceled game videos.

Kinda funny how they make a post bitching about it doing badly, and then it suddenly gets recommended and starts doing well
@thegrapefruit83623 жыл бұрын
Uh is it possible that the video they made saying their subscribers weren't served this GBA video actually led a lot of those subs to realize this video existed so they came and watched it? I mean that was the entire point of them posting that video. Makes sense doesn't it

It showed, for a lot of us... Many of us though didn't have an hour to spare on a finals week+Mother's day weekend on a video about cancelled gameboy advance games kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4DRc6SFjNesgLM&lc=Ugx3y7tavMdgLZxDeRd4AaABAg re-upload for archival purposes
@thegrapefruit83623 жыл бұрын
@@El_Frutero - Yeah they didn't say it showed for everyone, they said it was shown to less people. The video's like 2 minutes and 20 seconds of it is them saying the clickrate was average but views were way down, which means people were just as likely to click it if they saw it, but fewer people saw it.
