There's no songs in Mulan after the point where she sees war for the first time. The whole tone of the film changes. I think it's a good thing (and this is coming from a theatre kid)
@Chloetryingtheirbest5 жыл бұрын
It subtly shows how war changes people, the soldiers are all goofy and fun until the war becomes real to them. Shang has a song but he is never happy/goofy throughout it unlike the rest of the characters; you see him sad, worried and proud of his men (the only time we see him happy in the song). I didn't notice the lack of songs in the movie until I bought the soundtrack on its own.

For me, Hunchback will always be the best movie, because of how brave, inspiring and heart-breaking it is. The scene when that little girl approches Quasimodo, touches his face and hugs him, leaves me sobbing every single time. The musical is also one of my favorites, and I enjoyed the book as well, but the Disney film captures its magic so perfectly in tiny details, and the score is so wonderful. I love that Heaven-Hell narrative expressed EVERYWHERE in the movie, and both Heaven's Light (one of my favorite songs ever) and Hellfire one after the other. I didn't really understand the film as a kid, I simply liked seeing gypsies represented, as I myself grew up in a gypsie community, but this film is not only dark and deep, but also powerful and groundbreaking. I learnt to love it as a teen. Every time I see it, it brings something new. This movie will stay with me for the rest of my life❤️

Just a note, Mel Gibson's accent is on point. The British accent we hear today did NOT develop until after the American Revolution. So all the other characters actually stand out. Americans still speak with a rhotic accent which is what most people of Britain, Scotland, etc, spoke with way back then. We are more akin to speaking how Shakespeare did now than the British do. Once the loyalists returned to the UK, the people of London started teaching themselves how to speak in a fancier manner to separate rich from poor, but that failed. Everyone has picked up some of the posh accent and it developed into multiple dialects of today. So yeah....Cary Elwes is a worse Robin Hood in terms of speech. ;)

It's funny when you hear Patrick Star's voice in a movie that ISN'T SpongeBob, because there's also a scene in a horror movie where Fagerbakke plays a father and he just breaks into his Patrick voice.

This is a good line up, but my only critic is on how you judged Mulan based off of its musical score and its villain component. I feel that the main point of the short musical score to the movie is to truly establish the adult themes like war and mass loss in a way that light hearted musical movies by Disney couldn’t do. Compared to the rest of the movies in the list, Mulan has the most realistic and current theme regarding that it’s about war. While Disney villains are often made to be animated in their characters and whimsical while still being evil, the leader of the Huns is truly a villain to the core, having no musical scores dedicated to him along with no moments to show any type of humanity from him. In his opening with heartlessly killing one of the messengers because only one is needed, it’s clear that this villain is much darker than the others found in Disney. As the movie begins and goes on, the light hearted music and jovial overall atmosphere of the movie subtly gets across that even though Mulan is sacrificing a lot, she still doesn’t truly understand what she’s facing when it comes to the brutal war. That’s what makes the short score so powerful; there is not another scene much like the one where “A Girl Worth Fighting For” is suddenly cut off by the gruesome and sad image of an entire town burnt down due to unforgiving war. From that moment on, not another song is sung, which subtly establishes how war is such a gruesome and dark theme that cannot be given a whimsical spin with a song. The incredible choice of the placement of the songs along with the abrupt cut off for the rest of the movie really establishes the heavier themes, the true villain, and it even highlights the victory in the end, aiding the empowered woman ending without making it obnoxious. Mulan’s lack of connection to the villain shows how little humanity there is in war, and I think it was intentional instead of lazy writing. Mulan is my favorite Disney film and there are many reasons why, but its subtle yet wise choices in music and characterization are major reasons.

The scene where Shan Yu sees Mulan and recognizes her as "the soldier from the mountain" actually makes perfect sense. Shan Yu is the only male character in the movie who doesn't care about Mulan's gender once he meets her. He represents her final test because he is not sexist like the rest, he just wants to fight. To him, Mulan is just an enemy. By fighting him, Mulan proves herself to be not just strong for a woman, but strong in absolute. Mulan is my all-time favourite Disney movie and he's one of the main reason why: the "we shouldn't judge people by their gender, but by their skill" message it has could have only been conveyed with a villain that doesn't care about gender, and who is instead all about skill.

I feel like you misunderstood Mulan. The songs are few because it wouldn't be fitting to have many songs in probably the most serious Disney move. The last song stops dead when they first get thier real taste of war. The villan also isn't really the hun. Yes he is the bad guy, but he isn't her main struggle. Mulans real villan is her struggle with society and honor, and her overcoming them not with superpowers or some lucky break. She has to work for it, and even harder because she is a women. She shows that regardless of who you are, you can get much farther with hard work than you can with talent.

This is purely semantics, but Shan Yu, whom I almost called Shao Khan, is definitely the villain. He is a menacing figure who directly threatens the main character and supporting cast, with the removal of his presence leading to a drastically different tone. However, the antagonist is society, opposing any sort of respect for Mulan initially. The plot, tone, and themes are reflected by Mulan's goal to bring honor to her family and society's constant attempts to keep her down.

Beauty and the Beast at #1. You could not have been more right. An unfinished (unfinished in animation terms, not narrative) version of this film debuted at the LA Film Festival to a standing ovation so… yeah. The last Disney film to get a similar response was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when Walt Disney showed an unfinished, partially unanimated version of the film to an investor from Bank of America, who responded with, “Yeah, it’s gonna be a smash hit. Tell me how much you need.” This film is an absolute triumph. The sheer amount of human emotion that the animators put on the faces of these characters rocks me to my core every single time I watch this film. I love this film on a personal, nostalgic adventure but I can confidently say that it 1000000% holds up in my adult eyes 32 years after the release of this absolute masterpiece.

BB Gunz170 EXACTLY. Even ignoring that it looks nothing like a jaguar... Why would there be a jaguar in AFRICA?? watch some damn Big Cat Diary people ffs Edit for more info: Not only does it look nothing like a cheetah, in spot pattern or body shape... more importantly, cheetahs cannot climb trees, because they have doglike paws more suited to running, rather than catlike paws with retractable claws (which are ideal for climbing). Also, a cheetah would NEVER go after a gorilla... cheetahs are small, and always go after small prey like gazelles. Lions can't really climb well either, but for a different reason - they have the right paw structure, but they're simply too heavy/big to climb once they're adults, generally.

So his main points of criticism for Mulan are that many parts of the film didn’t follow the generic Disney template. I’d argue most are strengths of the movie which make it stand out from other films as a grounded, personal experience rather than something overly fantastical. Some of his arguments straight up misinterpreted the movie, i.e the cricket ruining Mulan’s matchmaking. It’s supposed to be a lucky cricket, and the matchmaking being ruined is a catalyst to her becoming the hero of China. The only point I could agree on is that Mushu is incredibly grating for the majority of his screen time.
@Zevoxian4 жыл бұрын

A Girl Worth Fighting for is abrutly cut short and is the last musical number in the movie because the reality of war sets in, and for much of the rest of the film songs no longer seem appropriate

Im glad you gave Beauty and the Beast the recognition it deserves. I feel it is overlooked with the more of the fun light hearted disney movies. I think Beauty and the Beast is among the best movies ever made. I have like 20 or so movies I consider God tier and I would definitely include B and B on there. Lion King is incredible but even at 9.5/10, it is still not a 10.

I always disliked how they did the "both sides are wrong!!!!" thing with pocahontas (disclaimer, I'm not native american) were the native americans always these perfect, spiritual, and kind people? no, native americans are human too, there are certainly native americans that did shitty things, as with every single group of people on the entire planet. but the anglo-powhatan wars weren't really this morally grey issue like pocahontas the movie portrays it as. the british settlers completly took advantage of the native americans initial kindness and welcoming. what the british did to them is unacceptable. the native americans were right to defend themselves and react the way they did, unlike the movie which seems to make a mockery of this tragic story. it implies that the native americans shouldn't have fought back and that the solution was just love and acceptance. even tho in reality the only love in the actual story of the real pocahontas (she was actually known as matoaka, and born as amonute. pocahontas was just a nickname) was the fake love of john rolfe and the innocent native american woman he kidnapped from her people, her father, and the fellow native american husband that she already had again, native americans arent infallible, but the anglo-powhatan wars had a very clear villian
@mldavid4056 Жыл бұрын
Many scholars don't believe Kocoum (Pochahontas' alleged first husband) actually existed, and the only known record that mentions the name "Kocoum" is believed by some to actually be referring to John Rolfe because of when it was written, John Rolfe wasn't even remotely involved with her kidnapping, their marriage actually created a brief period of peace between the colonists and the Powhatans, and as far as I can tell there was legitimate love between them.

Don't forget the fact that The Little Mermaid actually had story-related reasons to be a musical that exist outside the Disney formula in years to follow! The fact that Ariel and Sebastian are both, by talent and trade, musicians and Ariel trading her ability to sing (and subsequent lack of it) are central to the plot.

@michaelstrong53835 жыл бұрын
If it is then I agree. The remake sucked all of the emotions out and all the animals only had one expression. I know they don't express emotions the same way humans do, but once you decide to make them realistic as possible, it ruins what made the original film so beloved to begin with.
