I don’t agree with Toney in 2003! Roy Jones became the first middleweight fighter in over 100 years to win a belt a middle as well as heavy. John Ruiz after losing to Roy went on a 3 fight win streak beating guys like Golota and Rahman. Then in the same year, going from 193 back down to 175 to beat Tarver in a title defense definitely gets him fighter of the year. Toney beat Jirov who was solid but cruiserweight wasn’t a good division at all!! Vergil Hill after losing to Roy went on to be a 2x cruiserweight champ. John Ruiz who was a 2x heavyweight champ has better wins over Jirov. And Toney beat a completely washed Holyfield who mind you had already lost to John Ruiz lol. Roy 2003 was better

It really is a shame that Fernando Vargas had so much brain damage by the time he turned professional. We all know that sparring and using headgear is where most fighters develop CTE and between all his sparring and his bar/street fights growing up the dude started his career with a handicap. Seeing him get clipped by Tito brought back memories. I mean that was a crisp left hook but from the jump whenever he got hit on the chin in a fight he was stumbling around the ring like a drunk toddler. People always saying that his management rushed him along but the truth of the matter is they all knew what they were dealing with, that he had a short money making window and for them to see her return on their investment and for him to maximize his value they were gonna have to rush him along. He was a great fighter though like when he got hurt by Tito and he did some boxing for a few rounds and then actually got Tito on the canvas, just a fun guy to watch. # NOTE: 25:26 - Bernard Hopkins became the first ever unified 4-belt World champion (WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO + Lineal) P4P in 2004. NO MAN before him had achieved this. That unification stayed on from September 2004 till July 2005, when Hopkins lost his unified crown in a very controversial decision to HBO prospect Jermaine Taylor. What had hindered this from happen earlier was because political BS. Despite the WBO had existed since 1988, and was very respected in Europe and East Asia, but despite being only 5 years younger than the IBF (1983), unlike them who by 1985 was universal. The WBA did first officially recognize the WBO world title belt in 2000. The WBC did not recognize the WBO world title as "legit" until they officially did so in August 2004. However ironically, the IBF, the second youngest of the major 4, did not recognize WBO "officially" till Feb. 2007 = 3 years later (?) Dariusz Michalczewski in 1997 at one point held the WBA/IBF/WBO LH titles, but due to nasty politics lost both WBA & IBF titles. Scandalously, the WBA immediately took the belt for displaying its belt "along with that of the WBO" (!). Then forced relinquishing the IBF title when he was unable to defend the title in a court-ordered defense against mandatory challenger William Guthrie within a little over a month after the bout with Virgil Hill! # FIGHTER OF THE YEAR WINNER OPINIONS: 2000 - Lennox Lewis should have been fighter of the year. The first unified HW champion since 1992. He had three dominating title defenses in same year = Brutal KO's over WBC 1# Michael Grant and game tough Francois Botha (both in just 2 rounds) with finishing the year with completely out-boxing IBF 1# KO artist David Tua! At the end of that year, it was clear who OWNED the division with an iron-fist and that there was no man who would have stopped him in 2000. 2015 - Gennady "GGG" Golovkin should have been fighter of the year. He proved he ruled the MW division and was knocking everyone out with both skill & power. Tyson Fury won a boring fight over Wladimir where he just landed one punch more and the rest clowned-around. Sure Wladimir lost, but it was not in a dominating way. Fury ran from the obligated rematch, and then was caught with illegal substances just as his cousin Huge Fury got. He never deserved this award.

4 Belt era did not start til 2007 . The WBO was not recognized til then. Hopkins did pick up the WBO, however it was still the 3 belt era. Losing undisputed status in 05 then with Taylor the IBF going vacant that very same year for him to lose status. O'Neil Bell is the last of the 3Belt era in 2006 . Cecilia is the first 4 belt era undisputed in boxing as a whole in 2014, followed up by Terence Crawford in 2017.
@WarioSaysSo2 ай бұрын
@@OfficeHanchoBoxing But that would disservice the recognition politics of the WBA to recognize WBO in 2000, and the WBC to do so in 2004 = A boxer like Hopkins could win WBA/IBF/WBO and the IBF would know they had "lost" as the other majors are now unified. So when the 4-belt era "started" could be time stamped (like here in 2007), or stamped on who first made it to have all belts + defending all belts (then it would be Hopkins with victory over De La Hoya for the WBO title and then a first sucsessfull defence of all 4 belts against Howard Eastman). Hopkins is after all credited in the history books of boxing credited as the first P4P 4-belt champion to have won all 4 major world title belts + Ring title + Lineal title and defend them all with a "W".
@OfficeHanchoBoxing2 ай бұрын
@@WarioSaysSo 2007 is when it officially started when the WBO was recognized by all bodies. Its a disservice to the people post 06 that obtained undisputed status gathering all the titles. Mostly pushed by ESPN when this became a topic in 2017, O'neil Bell is erased from history and Taylor is constantly mentioned vaguely as the last undisputed champion. Not even mentioned as the last undisputed cruiserweight champ which Holyfield's name was brought up when Usyk had won all the belts. In the next decade when the IBO becomes recognized as the 5th. Are we going to put forward Roy Jones jr is the first 5 belt era champ? He defended 7 belts against Glen Kelly however he didnt have the WBO. Or Oleksandr Usyk ? Who is the first of the undisputed's to have the IBO title. Hopkins is the first to win 4 belts which hes credited but hes not the first of the 4 belt era when it officially started.
@OfficeHanchoBoxing2 ай бұрын
@@WarioSaysSo Its plain and simple, it literally states that the 4 belt era started when all organization recognized the WBO as a legitimate organization coming into 2007. You can keep saying what Hopkins did based on a string of events that led to him getting a 4th belt, but that doesn't change the fact that it officially on paper started in 2007. So therefore anyone who was undisputed or unified prior to 2007 had no initiative elsewise to go after the WBO. If that was the case there would have been more pressure for a Roy vs Dariuz fight, Hopkins vs Krajnc/ Simon , lewis vs Klitschko.
@WarioSaysSo2 ай бұрын
@@OfficeHanchoBoxing The thing is, for very likley reasons to the boxing politics, the IBO just as the WBU or IBA will never become "legit" world title belts. There was a long time ago in middle 00's talks about IBO, but unlike the WBO's case - IBO never in the past or afterwards have managed to aquire the respect and value from either fans or critics. There belt is regarded as a "bonus" belt, and have made service only when combined with the Lineal/Ring recognition(s) or any other major belt but never by iself and like said, likley never will because the market is already to wide. The WBU did a valid try in the middle 90's towards early 00's with some good champions but they never got more recognition then GB. And after 2005 or so they where bankrupt/defaulted. WBO gained a strong hold among European boxers as many of them had for decades been ignored by the American side of the Atlantic to get world title shots for one reason- or another (sure 80's had not many greats but the 90's..). Great Brittain, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, former Soviet states etc. recognized the WBO title just as legit as the others (WBC/WBA/IBF). It was just the US that held it at bay. SOme for valid opinions it dusturbed already unified champions, ex. Tyson, Holyfield etc. when the WBO entered the scene in 1989. A mistake was not to go with the unified champions who was regarded as the 1# best man like IBF did. Bur when the undisputed and unified crowns separated - then the field was open again, and as spoken earlier, European stars like Eubank, Michalczewski, Calzaghe etc. was ignored and/or avoided by the other title holders in weight divisions so those few early attempts at unification was always hindered. So yeah the 90's was hard for any boxer to unify anyway. Yeah the Roy Jones Jr era there was many times talks about him fighting Michalczewski in a great unification, and the stories have shifted who's to blame they never dueled, but in theory they could likley have been the first to happen as I believe the WBC, WBA & IBF would not want to stop there great cash-cow from fighting Michalczewski and his WBO title.
