My father and brother were working on a home project and had to go to the hardware store a couple of times. On the second trip, the guy made some comment about every home project requires three trips to the hardware store. Dad assured him that wasn’t the case. When Dad realized later that he needed something else, my brother said Dad went to a different hardware store. lol

I just spent 4 days chasing a plumbing problem. Every stop along the way required another repair. I'm exhausted, have a mountain of laundry from doing my own plumbing repairs, made 5 trips to the hardware store and have a list of non-related things to repair that I discovered as I worked... but I now have water! Coincidentally, I could now CLEP the exam for how to repair clean water plumbing problems. LOL

Me and my wife kind of went through the same thing at her parent's house. I took some pictures of the plumbing under the kitchen sink to look for parts at Home Depot. As I had all the parts in my hand I was asked if I needed help and luckily I had a flash of humility, because I soon as I showed him the picture of what I was trying to re-create, he became stern and said, "That's VERY illegal". So I had to redo a lot of work that I didn't even know was illegal and that explains a lot of the issues that we no longer have.

As funny as this is, it happened to us. The crack in our wall was the foundation SINKING because the builder put up houses on a former illegal landfill and the ground wasn’t stable enough for houses of that size. We had lived there long enough that we couldn’t take any legal action whatsoever, and all the permits were legal, so we didn’t stand a chance anyway. The fix was well over twenty grand! We actually had to walk away from our house, file bankruptcy, and let some investor buy it off the bank at auction, probably never being told about the foundation issue. It was a good thing we walked away; now they’re saying the ground might be TOXIC in that area and, since the properties have changed hands from developer to developer, they don’t know who is liable, so they don’t know who to sue! It’s a big mess! Seven years later and we’re RENTING for now. It’s somebody else’s problem if the damn place starts sinking! LOL!

And with the market how is it now 1. you don't have time for that and 2. asking for one will almost always have the seller looking at you with a side eye.

When we were looking to buy a house, we came across one where I think the guy legitimately was trying this. Every inch of that house had been freshly painted. Every line on the paperwork where the seller had to disclose any knowledge of problems had some line about how the seller rented the house out and never actually lived in it. So he had no knowledge of literally anything to do with the house. Under "flooding", there was one word: Katrina. No details. Okay, we thought, maybe it had a few inches of water (it wasn't in New Orleans). My dad was a contractor for most of his life, so we showed him the house. He was... hesitant. Then we got an inspection. There was a mysterious bulge in one of the exterior walls. The corresponding wall inside the house happened to be where the kitchen sink was. The floor of that cabinet had been newly replaced. The circuit breaker panel had rust on it. There's no way that could be from flooding, right? Oh, no, the realtor told us, this whole area got 8 feet of water during Katrina, didn't you know? My dad said, "If this house got 8 feet of water in Katrina and the circuit breaker panel still has rust on it, I doubt any of the electrical work has been properly replaced." We ran for the hills. According to Zillow, the next prospective buyer after us also canceled after inspection. Eventually, the price kept dropping until the owner just gave up and dropped the listing. Serves him right.

I've worked in four lumberyard/ hardware stores in my life. A home improvement project is a good measure of patience, IQ and marital stability. Oh Come On! This is funny, not funny! ;D I discovered a crack in a wall by the stairs, had a contractor come and inspect it only to find out that the builder didn't fully fill in the section in the attic which led to the center of the second floor to be 1/2"-1" shorter than the outer walls..... He laser scanned all the floors from the basement to the attic to confirm the foundation was solid.... So now we have to cut a section of the wall to fill it in to secure the rest of the wall then patch the crawling crack... yeah, "shortcuts". I'm also sure I'm not the only one who hears every creak and pop wondering, "now what".... ;D YEAH ADULTING!

Funny thing is, cracks occure in new houses all the time. Its called settling. Fill it up with painter's caulk, paint it and call it a day. If the crack returns and or gets bigger THEN call the contractor. Because THEN you might have an actual structure issue that needs to be addressed.

My house was built in 1890. I noticed a small wet spot on my living room ceiling, so called someone to look at it. The roof was old and it was time to replace it. So, got a roofer. Turns out there were four layers on my roof, one of which was a shaker shingle type, and they had to remove it all down to the decking. Got down to that and realized it needed to be replaced too. They finished the job, removed the dumpster from my lawn, and all was finished...until the city showed up with a notice that my house appeared to have a water leak. The dumpster had been sitting above the water main for my house. Turned out the water main was really old, like 1890 old, very fragile, and not buried below the frost line. The plumbers were shocked it had lasted that long. So, several thousand dollars later, I have a new roof and a new water main. That fall, my furnace keeps shutting off. Call a furnace company and it turns out that removing two inches worth of old shingles had changed the aerodynamics of the house and I was now getting a backdraft down the chimney the furnace vented into...and by the way, the 1890’s chimney had never been lined, so it need serious repair. Got a brick mason out to repair the chimney and adjust the height so it fixed aerodynamic problem. Then had the furnace company back out to line the chimney. All because I noticed a small spot on my ceiling.

STEP 36: Buy a new house. STEPS 37-71: Repeat the same process. STEP 72: Have the government find find out about your two fake identities and Steve, the Home Depot employee who turned out to be your co-conspirator. STEP 73: Get forced into a jail cell. At least you have Steve to talk to. In conclusion, don't fuss too much about changing the paint color of your house. You're better off just suffering with a paint color which is probably good enough as it is. Still, you will also probably have to suffer for years with a house with major structural deficiencies, even without knowing it. Don't worry, though, it probably won't become a serious problem until after you sell your house and the next owners have to deal with it. Besides, if the house inspector does notice the problem and you need to knock down the house before you sell it, you might as well save the money and not paint your house beforehand. BTW, this comment is meant to be a joke/humorous, just like this video is. Well done, It's a Southern Thing writers!

This was really funny, but it makes me even more happy that I married a man who can fix all of those problems, AND do a nice paint job! He and my son worked together to strip out old walls and make a brand new bath and a half, plus a real linen closet instead of old kitchen cabinets for the towels. Right now they are working on prepping the front wall to install our new front door. I was also informed that they plan to re-do the front closet to the proper orientation. Bonus Points!
