There are precious few hotels that hold the dishonour of Alex Polizzi refusing to stay, but the ones that do exist can all be found in this video. Alex's regular routine of staying the night to gain an authentic experience is disrupted when she won't cross the line in the sand she has drawn.

I've travelled extensively and was the GM for a very busy motel business. I've stayed at 1* through to 5* and the one thing I can say: There's zero excuse for being dirty. Even a 1* can be immaculate and be a 1* because it doesn't have a lot of services. I'm quite okay with no services, so long as it's clean. I've stayed at 5* where I've seen filth that doesn't belong anywhere. It's not the star rating that determines things, it's the cleanliness. There's zero excuse for it.

Agreed, I've been in a hotel that had no TV or WiFi in the rooms, no kettle, shared showers but they were clean because the staff cared. If the owner doesn't want to put any effort in why would the staff?

That first guy was such a tool, thought he was too good to bother with things like cleaning filth and felt that if it's cheap, guests should expect it to be dirty. The second one is hilarious. He doesn't want to overwork, so can't change a lightbulb. 😄

People mock and denigrate inexpensive hotels such as Travelodge and Premier Inn all the time, but I've stayed in them numerous times and while facilities were limited, the rooms have always been spotless, beds comfortable, and staff pleasant and helpful. I daresay some have had bad experiences, but I speak as I find, and I've also stayed in expensive hotels where cleanliness and good service seemed to be alien concepts!

The first one - the guy behind the bar seemed nice and eager to please, albeit pretty clueless. But that can also have to do with poor management. If he were snapped up by a proper hotelier and trained properly in hospitality, he could actually be an asset. The owner, however... yikes. All gussied up with a suit and tie but thinking the dirt is acceptable, which makes you wonder about his own self care. What I'd call nice from far but far from nice.

As far as the mould in the bathroom goes a liberal spray of bleach will remove most of it. Further scrubbing once the majority it removed will deal with anything remaining, and regular maintenance thereafter will keep it clean. The proprietor's remarks about how cheap the place is in no way excuses neglect. It is a matter of hygiene. Anybody with a skerrick of decency would be rightfully appalled at the total lack of proactive cleaning the owner devotes to his establishment. He can wear a suit and think he's a hard headed businessman. But he makes a fool of himself putting his name to this dump.

Using bleach against mold is a terrible idea, better to use vinegar or specific solutions for combating mold. Often bleach will just end up feeding the mold and make it worse. Which makes your comment make even more sense and gives these people less of an excuse cos I'm pretty sure vinegar is cheaper than bleach lol.

@@fawnieee Yes, you are correct, and for the record I run a cleaning company. Had I written "just use white vinegar," as I've seen countless times all over, most if not all people will use the cheapest vinegar they can find. Naturally fermented white vinegar is required for mould removal, mixed to a ratio of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. Mould removal is one my specialty services. However, considering the overall state of this property I still believe bleach is the first material I would use for an overall deep clean, which it sorely needs. The scum encrust on the vanities and elsewhere in the bathroom is of a density I rarely see. Were this my property I'd be using a straight solution of bleach on practically every surface and especially those in the wet rooms. Please know I am not trying to belittle you or the owner of the B&B.

I used to travel a lot with work and they put me in some sketchy hotels, I used to have a kit including a double sleeping bag, a space heater, wedges that I used to hammer into doors with no locks, a tarp and a few other small items. I always used the showeres in services as they were normally reasonably clean. One hotel had cables hanging out of the wall that sparked in the night which was not great to wake up to.

People who just doesn't care. I once stayed in a hotel that fits right in with these. It looked fine online but boy did these photos lie. Long story short: we called this place Hairy Beds & Rotten Milk. The bedsheets were covered in pubes and when I called to ask for new sheets I was told to eff off. Classeigh. But yeah, I don't think the sheets had been used for more than three or four months without being changed or washed so I guess they were still "good to go". And then in the morning when I was deperate to shower after a night in the nastiest bed I ever tried to sleep in, I had to climb on top of the toilet and turn the sink around for the shower to pop out of the wall. Craziest bathroom "design" ever, and followed by all breakfast where everything was either rotten or moldy. And yes, we also had "entertainment" during the night as some of the other guests had a nice little knife fight right outside of our room. It was like the universe was playing a game of "The 50 worst experiences in a hotel" an mixed them all to give us the Full Hotel Hell Experience. I looked it up a while ago and thankfully it seems to have closed. From what we could figure out it wasn't really intended for single night guests but was a long stay place for homeless people deep in addiction. However, I would argue that even if you are at rock bottom you deserve better than insanely dirty rooms and rotten food.
