Old backyard trick I learnt is use a bit of old garden hose on the dill bit cut to length so it only goes as far as you need to drill

I put a Raceskidz plate on my E34 5 series that is quite low , and am very happy with it. It is a better design because the metal is thicker gauge than Red46s, has cutouts like vents in it, and one for access to the oil drain plug. I made sure to space my skid plate just slightly away from my oil pan so if it takes a hit and flexes it still wont contact the pan which is cast on most older bmws so that is important. Mine has taken a few solid hits and the only damage Ive sustained is scratches to the finish on the plate. It is one solid MF , if I get anymore old BMWs I will be sure to find a RaceSkidz for it. There is actually a factory skidplate in the parts catalog for the E30s, and quite a few older BMWs. I found one from a guy local brand new so Im going to try it out. It looks like it isn't that strong, but it has some decent weight to it and bolts right on.

So I forgot to share my story about smashing an oil pan in my old B5 Audi A4. Jumped the railroad tracks at 60MPH nose 👃 dived smashed the pan. Slowed for a traffic light then I was desperately waiting to drive a way to see if I had a cloud of smoke 💨 and trail. Well yep huge trail dove it 20 ft and had to get a new oil pan. Lesson learned buy a skid plate before jumping railroad tracks 😂

I finally got all my parts in to start reassembleing my 325e with the "I" head. This is like my 4th engine build but for some reason I am so nervous about it. I think it's the fact that I have spent an obscene amount of money in parts and machine work. and if I screw one little thing up I'm fucked. Yes my '89 E30 has hit the pan a few times so I have one of those skid plates coming along with the CATuned coil over set up. I am running the H&R Sport Cup Kit right now and it is a tad too low for my liking. The car handles like a cat on carpet but for the streets here in Canada it just isn't practical. Thanks for videos please keep them coming and one on "how to" set up suspensions for track days or something like that would be great. Keep 'em coming they are a joy to watch.

Driving my 79 VW rabbit, lowered with 205/50/15 tires, going through Oklahoma where it seems 6 to 8 inch ruts in the highway is totally fine. I did an excellent 300 yard 50/50 grind at 70mph. Who knew oil pans, exhaust and floor pans don't like meeting pavement 3 or 4 inches higher than ground clearance? Would have loved to have a skid plate on the poor old girl, rest in piece.

Great video showing what all goes into this install. I just got an E30 that has a skidplate (I think it's actually this exact one), and I managed to scrape it going up an inch and a half high bump after taking a picture of it. I freaked out until "Oh yeah, skidplate" lol

blake, holy crap what an ordeal to install this skid plate!!! took me hours bc the skid plate wouldn't line up nicely w/ the steering rack holes & radiator support (after i drilled it a million times to bore out each hole). but w/ due time, i made it work. thanks a lot for the informative & funny video!!!

I made the pan contact the road at aprox 100 mph/h = 160 km/h. This was in 1999 or 2000. Ran what was called Jamex 40mm/40mm lowered springs and dampers on it. Was a small dip so it bottomed out. Sparks where flying, but it was all good. Not bad for and old 9/87 moddel 318I with an M40 engine:P

Love my 46 plate, deff saved me plenty of times last year. I scrape pretty frequently not being im stupid low but because the roads suck here. I have yet to do an oil change on it, see how that works out with the plate on. Ive hit my exhaust a few times but its mostly the skid plate.

I've got an e30 that's pretty damn low and I've cracked my oil pan 3 times. Once without having a skid plate and twice with it. The skid plate definitely helped protect it but the issue was that my skid plate literally touched the bottom of my oil pan. So whatever smashed my skid plate practically hit my oil pan too. I got condor speed shop motor risers and haven't had an issue since. Lifts the motor about an inch and creates a solid gap between the skid plate and pan.

Really curious about the CATuned coilovers since they look alike all those BC's and Megan's coilovers out there. I triggered on a full coilover kit from GroundControl (eibach + koni + camber plates + rear top mount) and hope I did the right choice!!

Only thing I've ever had smashed below on of my cars was my old Pontiac Fiero. And I didn't even do it! Took it to a shop to have ball joints put in and they didn't load it up properly on their lift and bent my coolant pipes that ran underneath the car from front to back. Sucked ass. I was able to bend it back enough to make it work another couple years though.

I decimated my E30 oil pan when I straddled a manhole. It was above the road grade and the road sagged on either side of it. If I was to hit it with my tires it would have cracked a wheel or blew out my tire. Which I know because I cracked a wheel in three places on my other E30 on a dang ole' man hole. I was lowered on BavAuto red springs.

Buddy of mine had a clean 240sx notch with a datsun Z car Inline 6/5 sp swap that had a custom pan made for the swap. For whatever reason, the dude welded the drain bung into the bottom of the pan, and just used a standard hex head bolt with a copper gasket ring. We were out swashbuckling in some parking lots after a good rain and my buddy goes sideways as fuck into this puddle, trying to kick up a shit ton of water. Instead, he managed to find a manhole with that bolt head and fucking mangled his pan. The bolt head was pretty good and flattened on thr impact side (so it was a bitch to remove) and it pretty much just twisted the whole bottom of the pan around the bung so bad that tge copper o ring couldn't seal. He was tripping the whole way back to my shop about how he thought he probably got water into the pan and was gonna washout somr bearings. All turned out fine in the end though, just straightened out the pan and put a new bung in (on the bottom of the side this time, lol)

I just blew up my pan today, but this plate seems really fragile, especially now that I know how much force goes into the pan with a hit like this. Have you seen the HIK Fabrication skid plate? It has to be welded to the frame rails which seems much sturdier to me.

My buddy and i went up to oakland/ san fran for a football game about 2 years ago in my 1991 e30 ,took about 12 hrs around thanksgiving... lowered of course, made it fine all the way there around town and to the game and all . on our 12 hr drive back home about 30 mins from my house after dropping my buddy off , some piece of metal hanger or whatever it was, that had to of fallen from a work truck. decided to magically appear right in the middle of the lane i was in (it was a little foggy) . i hit that thing and it ripped off my oil drain plug. literally pulled it off. sucked had to wait another hr to get picked up! now its a must to have a skid plate . only thing is they are kind of expensive lol, so still don't have one .haha

My old e30 was way lower than that, I broke 3 oil pans until I said fuck it & put stacked some wide washers between the motor mounts & the engine. Never broke any again. No I didn’t have any vibration or anything weird happen with the driveline bc it wasn’t crazy out of whack. Just last week I cracked my e34 oil pan, just threw some washers in there now lol

could you tell us how much clearance you lost? my oil pan sits maybe 3 inches from the floor, if this makes you lose an inch or more, it might not be worth it.

I have stock plastic skid plate which is garbage. Doesn't even cover the pan. I bought my 89 325is in shit Condition and the oil pan was jb welded by previous owner. It leaked very little and then one day it busted open bad. Ended up replacing oil pan without removing sub frame and broke my motor mounts in process. After we put new oil pan on my oil light intermittently goes on and off and I have lowering springs and bilstein b6s on mine and I ended up puncturing the oil pan myself. Not doing another pan Install. I need a skid plate like this. I live in montana so it's kinda. Needed.

Smashed my oil pain and scrape my exhaust a lot, don't have a skid plate yet but it's in the todo list, I would like a vented skid plate as I swapped in the m20b25 and am not running an oil cooler, although a lot of forms said the oil cooler wasn't really worth it, it would give me peace at mind knowing the skid plate is at least vented

Blake's Garage one day if I go turbo or this thing sees heavy track use, then I'll upgrade to an oil cooler, but till then, I'm not worrying about one as I never drive it hard enough for a long period of time to really need one, and I mean, if you think about it, the m20b27 motor didn't come with one, so the b25 should be fine as long as it's not seeing heavy track ise

I let my dad drive my lowered e30 and I stressed him that the car is low. Watch out for pot holes and big ass speed bumps. He says okay I will. He comes back from school and I notice that the muffler is all crooked and bent. I was so mad. I brought it up to him and he says yeah I kinda forgot the car was lowered dude. Sorry. Now I gotta take it back to the muffler shop and have it fixed or replaced.
