I'm a writer, and I'm writing a screenplay based on a cult using this as my inspiration. All I'm learning is cult leaders really only have "I'm telling the truth because trust me" and people join because they're either being manipulated in some way, or are just told not to question it or you'll lose salvation
@chrislamp1432 ай бұрын
hey so cult leaders tend to prey on vulnerable people, usually going through some sort of extreme hardship. the idea that only ignorant or dumb people join cults actually makes it harder for the average person to recognize if they are being recruited. there tends to be a lot more emotional manipulation and abuse going on than a simple "trust me". hope this helps for your screenplay

Roch also killed a two year old by forced alcohol poisoning - which is leaving out a lot of details. His abuse was unbelievable, especially when he drank. Imagine his roaring laughter echo through the freezing forest as he searches for you with ax in hand. You're exhausted and starving, and you know running away will amplify his wrath if he finds you, but maybe you have a chance of avoiding another home surgery or torture session. His followers were living in hell and he had such a grip on their minds that they never questioned any it (more than once); even wrote love letters thanking Roch for purifying them and apologizing for their sins (like eating one pancake too many in one case). The suffering they experienced must have been on a similar level to Joseph Mengele's or Shiro Ishii's experiments in my mind. True terror.

This is mostly down to the increased religious diversity (especially in different sects of Christianity) and the lack of cultural affiliation with religion which is common with many other countries and cultures. The US has a long history of religious cults and extremists from the puritans in Plymouth, the davidians in Waco, and the Scientologists in California.
@OddOwl12 ай бұрын
It's easy to think that most cults happen in the U.S. because some of the most infamous ones, like Heaven's Gate and Jonestown, did. The U.S's religious freedom, focus on individualism, and a huge cultural emphasis on charismatic leaders to name a few might be a reason. However Aum Shinrikyo was in Japan, and The Movement of Restoration of the Ten Commandments was in Uganda and The Order of the Solar Temple operated in Europe and Canada. Cults mostly form because they often prey on people's fears and desires for belonging or purpose, which are universal human experiences. So i guess while U.S. might have a reputation for it, cults are a global issue. Also media frenzy on US cults is one of the causes, which can make it seem like it's a mostly American problem when it's really not.

Cult steps: Step 1 : Convince people of imminent world destruction. Step 2: Tell them that they can be saved by us. Step 3: Ask them to do whatever you want.
