Super Mario Kart, a prime example of first game syndrome. There are a couple good courses, but there's a LOT of jank that later games would fix. That said, I can't hate it due to how influential it is, and I can occasionally laugh with the game's jank instead of at it. Also, shout-outs to Mario Circut 2 and Rainbow for actually holding up pretty well for 30 year old tracks.

As much as this game aged poorly, you cannot deny its music is great. Soyo Oka gave it her all to make an amazingly charming soundtrack that came a long way. as for my favorites: Mario Circuit Battle Mode, Rainbow Road, and as shit as the course is, Vanilla Lake as my personal favorite.

I'm gonna be the weird one to say that I actually enjoy Super Mario Kart and while I can somewhat agree with the "janky controls" after playing the game for a while, you start to grasp on the capabilities of your movement. It's best to throw your expectations for how Mario Kart plays out the window for Super if you want to give this entry a fair shake. Anyways shoutouts to the competitive scene for this game they're insane.

Your mention of the controls being difficult are why I've come to find playing SMK so satisfying. Once you get the hang of the controls, you can flex your mastery with ease on all the courses including the vanilla lakes. And watching people's time trials of rainbow road is amazing. Lastly, good on you for making an honest effort with ranking the courses knowing how old this game is.

Honestly Vanilla Lake 2 is probably my biggest guilty pleasure course in the entire series. I acknowledge that it's not good, not by a long shot, but I always have fun playing on it for some reason and genuinely want to see it return as the obligatory SNES course in the next Mario Kart game.

@@DrStuff142 I disagree about the controls, but yes, F-Zero was the Mode 7 racing predecessor, and while insanely popular, all of us that played it wished for a version with more varied environments, weapons, and ability to go off road. Mario Kart granted our wish

I actually disagree with this philosophy. I would argue that the original Mario bros, for example, is a TERRIBLE game, but back then it was legendary. Now we have better, so you shouldn’t be caught up with how good it was back then, and focus on retrospect

Words can’t describe hopping over part of the track in the 90s. You hit the nail on the head with that. This was the first game I remember playing. I didn’t really race at first I just drove around and “explored” each track. It may not look like much now but I still have fun going back to it. The worst game in the Mario kart series is still pretty damn good.

It's astounding that this game gets 8-9 scores still. Not referring to the reviews in 1991, but ones that came out decades later. It's like they didn't replay the game and just judged off "oh this is the game that started the series so it must be great by default"
