One thing I love about Link in Mario Kart is the big smile he's always got on his face. He's so happy to be there, and I'm happy for him. He needs a break from all the kingdom saving, and while he's been in Smash since 64, that's just more fighting, so it's nice to see him in something where he can really relax and have fun.

Funky Kong has the looks, the voice, the personality… Even if he had the worst stats in Wii he would *still* be a fan-favorite. Although, the stats do boost him up in the fanbase, thanks to his use in speed running. It’s sorta like Super Macho Man. The character is already great enough, but a goofy quirk or aspect in their use in the game elevates them to a wider appeal.

I agree with you that he's probably the most generic pick you could go with for Mario Kart and Mario games in general, but he's always been a very nostalgic character for me, so I play him mostly because of that. I also play him somewhat out of spite. I was playing a spinoff game with a friend, and we got into a debate of how Mario was super boring, and no one picked him in his own spinoff. Mario in this game has great comedic value for me, because he’s the character of choice for my “I’m pretending I just opened this game out of the box and I’m not aware you can change characters and parts” loadout. If I'm not mistaken, most of the 64 era Peach voices were essentially random Nintendo/ of America employees. They got Cortana for a few of the GC era games, then settled on whoever it is now. And Charles Martinet was, by sheer coincidence, also part of Bowser's voice, with some of Bowser's sounds being highly distorted old voice clips of his. Bowser also had a somewhat tumultuous GC voice history, before Bowser's Inside Story more or less solidified his voice for everything but Smash. And I don't know anyone else.

I forget the exact order of operations, but that laugh was made by slowing and distorting the sound of the Boo sound... which itself was a stock sound clip sped up. That stock sound clip of a man laughing was actually recorded by Charles Martinet some decade earlier. By compete coincidence it was on the selection the Super Mario 64 devs had, and was the one they chose, then later unknowingly casting the source of that laugh as Mario.

As someone who likes to gravitate towards lighter characters, with Lemmy being my main in 8 Deluxe, I really liked this list. Yeah sure, the characters I used placed mostly midway like Daisy and Yoshi, but I can understand Schaff's reasoning for who's at the top, and it's not like they're bad picks. Also, this is one of the only times I've heard anyone say they liked the Koopalings, which is just really good to me. As far as I'm concerned as long as Funky stays on top and the wasted MK8 character slot stays at the bottom, there's very little to get mad at.

The Shy Guys are honestly my favorite Mario enemies. Their masks and short stature makes it impossible for me to not smile whenever I see them.
