Thanks Summoning Salt I just finished the video and you take something that seems trivial such as Wii Sports speed runs and tell the story in such a way that at the end you actually felt the heartache and the impact of that last missed putt. My heart actually sank and I was like damnnn. My wife was like what is wrong as I was listening with headphones on the couch. I told her this guy missed a putt in Wii golf and she looked at me sideways lol. Thanks for everything bro!!!

The time for the miis to turn around and throw to first after the grabbing the ball changes depending on how far they have to stretch for the ball, so it's different every time. Miis stretching for the ball also changes the time for out to display on 1.0, so there is never a 'constant' time to compare against. There is also random lag that can occur in Bowling and Golf when striking / hitting rock walls and doing ds that is extremely prevalent in 1.1. To compensate, a few months ago a version variable was added to the board, meaning that players can filter runs to include just 1.1 runs, meaning there is a psuedo-seperate leaderboard. Also big fan of your vids champ keep em up

His first speed run he submitted for the category was an 8:38.850 on May 12th 2023. He submitted 8 more runs over the next 7 months when he finally managed a sub 7 run. His previous run before that held 4th place for a day if I am reading the leaderboard right. Mr_Shy_Guy could’ve been the first sub 7 if he had 1.0 but it wouldn’t have held up against RyMacG4. RyMacG4’s account was only a few months old without a run to his name when this video was made.

“Only one person could beat Alaska, and that person is Alaska.” Absolutely fantastic delivery
@johnarmstrong55333 жыл бұрын
Summoning Salt is really good at storytelling. I started this video with a bemused "competitive Wii Sports? Haha, sure. How does _that_ work?" mood and I ended the video with a heartbroken "sub-7 minutes was there, it was possible, it was *real* for a fleeting moment..." I appreciate the choice to end on a hopeful note, reiterating that a pace like that has been seen before, and will be seen again. Normally in these kind of speedrunning analysis videos, you only see the one successful run, and don't see the hundreds of failed attempts it took to get to that point. And putting the spotlight on the struggle (instead of the triumph) makes the story feel more relatable, more human.

I wanted to chime in here and give kudos on the terminology as well, and mention that in real golf a similar rule exists as to what the community came up with. The ball must remain in the hole to be considered holed even if it's already hit the bottom of the cup on a bounce. Also, if the ball is trapped between the pin and the lip of the cup, it is not considered holed unless a portion of the ball is below the level of the green. Otherwise, you have to pull the pin to see if the ball will fall in or stay on the edge of the cup.

I'm not sure how to explain this well, but one of the things you do really well in your videos is establishing how important a specific thing in a run is going to be, without giving away ahead of time whether or not it works out, and then letting us see how it goes. And every time you say something like "it all came down to this one crucial moment..." and I still have no idea whether it's going to work out or not. That's a really good skill as a storyteller. It makes your videos really suspenseful and enjoyable.

If they're willing to do the complicated chip-in rulings, you'd think it would be simple to just remove the extra cutscene time from 1.01 submissions; kinda similar to the PAL vs. NTSC adjustments for Mario Kart. At the very least the starting cutscene could be accounted for, and surely it'd do wonders for accessibility.

It _literally killed_ the competition on those versions for *_years._* People only just started logging records on them again about two or three years ago, and before that there was a five-year drought. I'm surprised that those on 1.01 couldn't just subtract the time it takes for the baseball animation to play. Feel like that would help even the playing field and ease the stress copies of 1.00 would have(unless they emulate, but I don't think speedrunners do that, more so out of purity reasons.) An example of this I can think of is Mario kart speedrunners having time conversion for pal and ntc since they're the same game, just with different time effects
@joepod3 жыл бұрын
Without an extensive review of the source code, you can't know for sure that the baseball animation is the ONLY thing that impacts the times between v1.00 and v1.01. Anyway, records can be sorted by version number, so its not like 1.01 owners go without proper recognition.
@ryjelsum3 жыл бұрын
It's harder to do it because it's not a static amount of time. You can ballpark it, but there's ever small variation because the number of throwing animations isn't the same every game. With MK it's easier because it's just a straight 25-30 frame conversion.
@Ampheon1813 жыл бұрын

Yep, I am suprised they didn´t substract / add the time to the runs to make it even or just outright ban 1.00 for speedrunning. I am just really used communities banning certain copies of a game, due to rarity, for example many of the iQue copies of games that are much faster than other version. Also the fact that the Wii is a region locked console either requires you to hack your non-american Wii or you buy an american Wii + the 1.00 version on top. I don´t think it´s good for integrity.
