Every Priest Is a Jacob’s Ladder

Friends, please enjoy this brief video from Spirit Juice Studios of my ordination of six Dominican friars to the priesthood, which took place on May 25th at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.
The Order of Preachers has had a profound impact on my life, and I am grateful to the Dominicans for inviting me to ordain these men as priests of Jesus Christ.
These priests are also the first group of men that I have ever ordained, so they will always hold a special place in my prayers and in my heart.
Please keep these new priests and all the newly ordained priests in your prayers, asking the Lord that they always remain faithful and seek to imitate in their own lives the sacrifice of Jesus, our great high priest.

Bishop I just wanted to thank you, i discovered your channel this june after years of existential suffering brought by my past atheism (i have been an atheist for 13 years and this june after 2 years of questioning myself and my believes i returned to my faith in Christ) you have been insanely helpful during the transitioning part from atheist to believer. Initially i returned to Catholicism because i felt an incredible unconditional love after i did my first prayer in 13 years during a moment of profound sadness, i couldn't explain in any possible way that pervading sensation of being loved unconditionally, that was the first step for me but you have been the intellectual key after that metaphysical experience i had, really thank you. Bishop Robert Barron To say that every priest is another Christ is an unfortunate misunderstanding of truth. While no doubt well-meaning, the truth from the Word is that Christ died once for all. Christianity is not suposed to be about priests. It's supposed to be about Christ. So much harm has been done to the Church's witness down the centuries up to the present day, by deifying the ministerial priests as if they became Christ in his own person, at the consecration - instead of remaining priests via baptismal adoption, like the rest of the laity. Neither do they become the sacamental body and blood of Christ. They are mediums, channels of God's grace in their specially-ordained office, certainly, but that is something quite different. God could appoint any layman - and woman if he so chose - as Christ assured us he could raise sons of Abraham from the very stones. It sounds to be the path to what Francis designated as the most pernicious of vices of the clergy : spiritual worldliness.

Oh come on! That's just a tad over-heated. No one is suggesting that priests are equal to Jesus. But they do indeed participate in his life and work--and in a manner distinctive from the non-ministerial priesthood of the laity. This is the teaching of Vatican II.

@@BishopBarron Inded, it is duistinctive, as I said . However, claiing it to be ontologically distinctive is deeply erroneous. It is distinctive by reason of the 'dedicatd' role God had assigned to it - just as the mark on the soul referred to by St thimas Aqinas is the mar not of an ontological reality but of a call. The same has to be true of baptism : they have to be assented to in the manner of God's choosing, i/e more than lip-service. We have been asured by many saints and mystics that there are many 'priests' in hell, yet we are told that they are 'priests forever after the order f Melchisedek in an ontologically distinctive way in relation to the priesthood of the laity. The operative word in the term 'spiritual sacrifice' is not 'sacrifice', but 'spiritual'. God wills that we worship him in spirit and truth. He has undergone the ultimate, uniquely-meritorious, bloody, self- sacrfifice, and there should be no ambiguity about that, even in the Mass. Least of all in the Mass. As Francis pointed out, Japanese survivors of a purge of Christians on the orders of the ruler, when eventually encountered once again by Westerners, had managed quite well, despite having no priest. Not to diminish, still less dsparage the formal role of the elder/priest, but to allow that God can adapt to whatever degree of informality might be required in a particular situation with the greatest of ease. For all that I'm arguing the toss with you here with total conviction, Bishop Robert, I am aware of your superior general erudition and admire your witness to so many peope who had been adrift, so to speak.
