I feel like there should be an opposite counterpart to the Peter Pan complex. People who insist that you MUST give up anything that makes you joyful or comfortable in order to seem “more adult,” suggesting that they have come to associate adulthood with putting yourself through unnecessary misery in order to seem more grown-up. This likely stems from the subject projecting their own insecurities about being “Mature Enough” onto the people around em.

You're describing most parents. 99.9 of parents tell their kids they're "too old" for whatever hobby/interest & that that they "need to grow up, get a job". My own parents forced me to grow up by adding extra chores and making me go to college. All parents think being grumpy means being mature because they're grumpy and think that's just part of being an adult. Plus misery loves company so they don't want to feel alone.

It has a female versión, Electra complex. Girls can crush on Daddy y'all.
@call_me_LupАй бұрын
@Coni-kg8kn ik it's called like that in females, but I have also seen that the name odipeus can also be referred to both genders-

What would be the complex of the person who solves everyone else's problems, like the psychologist friend, but avoids their own because they don't know how to deal with their own problems?

Poor Oedipus, bro was actually a pretty good guy, just accidentally married his mom (after trying so hard to avoid doing that) and then killed himself when he found out.

I got both Peter Pan and Jonah complex. I grew up overprotected by my parents. I was also a "gifted child" and my parents, teachers and other community members expected a lot from me. I'm scared of succeeding because it feels like a huge burden

Peter Pan complex could also be a coping mechanism for trauma or bad mental health. We call it age regression. We do this, but not 100% of the time
@user-fm7gu2vc6iАй бұрын
Not the same
@my_own.god218Ай бұрын
As someone with Peter Pan syndrome whose best friend age regresses, it’s not the same lol. It’s like immaturity vs, well, regression. He’s responsible and (fairly) well adjusted, with the personality and self awareness of a sweet kid. I’m more self conscious, but irresponsible and lacking self respect. But we’re both fun and unserious. (Edit: Also, I should’ve mentioned, 1, that I’m aware age regression isn’t a constant like PP syndrome; for instance, my friend is a diligent college student most of the time. Also, 2, the version of PP syndrome in this video is quite stereotypical. We aren’t all rude manchilds, those are just the ones more likely to get attention.)
