I live by a small bridge since 2007, and since 2007 it's been under maintenance and usually only has one lane open. The Italian Mafia truly found an infinite money glitch with construction contracts. The largest bridge in Europe and the largest bridge in the World were built in like 2 years... Meanwhile they've been renovating a small one for at minimum 16 years here.

Ummm, I was on a site that went through 3 of 'em. (I wonder what the record is.) One who didn't run away was turfed completely out of his job by the time the site manager got through with him. Neither one respected the other, and when push came to shove, the site manager won the war. I still remember one night when the site manager was up on some concrete viaduct with a demolition breaker, hammering away at something WHILST TETHERED (and I saw my mate give a good yank to the tether, which he didn't usually do, so I know he made sure it was good before he walked out), the safety guy saw him and complained that it wasn't safe working. A shouting match ensued from 12m up down to the safety guy on the ground, and my fed up mate came down off the viaduct, glared at the safety officer, got into a 30 tonne excavator, clattered it across the road, and started doing exactly the same job as noisily and with as much gusto as he could, at 2am, in an area full of high rise hotels. As he noted to me later, "Any complaints will be answered with, 'I was doing it using a quieter work method, but the safety officer told me to stop. The only other option was the big digger. We had to make it safe by 5am to reopen the road, so there wasn't another choice. Take it up with him.'" LOL. I wouldn't quite call it mutual career sabotage, but it was certainly a war. The site had a code name for that particular safety guy, to covertly pass the word that he was on-site when he dropped by. Good times, LOL. I sometimes wonder what happened to the bloke.
