I really think you should have separated the 2D Sonic games from the 3D Sonic games on this list so we can see where they rank separately considering if you at least don't count Sonic labyrinth or Sonic 3D blast, the 2D Sonic games maybe other than Sonic blast are going to be rated really high. It would be curious to see how things actually go with the 3D Sonic games as long as you don't include spin-offs like Sonic shuffle which would definitely bring it down for the Sonic kart racing games which I think would actually bring it up since all three are pretty good especially transformed which I think is incredible, and of course don't include the Sonic riders games since those are also racing spinoffs. I'd love to see where the 3D Sonic games rank if you just include the 3D platformers starting from Sonic adventure all the way to Sonic forces since at the time this video came out Sonic Frontiers didn't even release and maybe that games a different category anyways.

There were some Sapo Xulé spin-offs as well. Master System was the first really mainstream console in Brazil, mostly because it came with games on its internal memory, it was cheap and it had local support (with Portuguese-written instruction booklets and covers) through Tec-Toy. Plus, NES games were heavily pirated, with many generic consoles compatible with its cartridges (the small ones), like Top Game (which I owned) and Turbo Game (which, oddly, had a upside-down controller). The only real competition came with the 16-bits war (on which the Genesis - Mega Drive, if you wanna get Brazilian about it - had the lead), with the Playstation obliterating everyone else when it arrived, mostly because pirated games were HELLA CHEAP. I mean 1U$D cheap, so a lot of people would save money to get it. Before that, a lot of poor people's contact with videogames was through placeds where you paid by hour to play it.

Except for a few games like Shadow, Secret Rings, 06 (06 had decent moments, but I get why people hate it.) and Rise of Lyrics. Here's an example of a low scored sonic game that I and others considered good: Sonic and the Black Knights (Decent writing, awesome characterization, last good sonic story. I never really liked the gameplay. This and Sonic Unleashed felt like truly the last sonic games where Sonic Team had tried.) *Tl;dr* Not all low scored Sonic Games are bad. One of the things that made the original Phantasy Star so unique was that it was among the first- if not THE first- fantasy game to have a first person perspective in its dungeons. The smooth first person scrolling of its dungeons was incredibly different from top down view of The Legend of Zelda and one of the reasons I really enjoyed it.
@philmason96533 жыл бұрын
The Wizardry series had used an entirely first person perspective since 1981, and had been highly influential around the world, especially in Japan (where it continued long after it died off in the West). The whole dungeon crawler genre was built off its template. In fact The Black Onyx in 1984, which was the first successful Japanese rpg, was entirely first person.

@@diecarro79 Yeah, the only reason the original Phantasy Star made a name for itself was the polish and overall art direction, plus fair gameplay. All the other first person dungeon explorers on console were sadomasochistic experiences that were rough on the eyes and ears.

It was awesome that you could slot Sonic 3 in Knuckles for the Genesis. It opened up more areas of the map with Knuckles that normally Sonic couldn't get to.

You really should've broken Sonic into 2D and 3D (especially since you broke Sonic Advance into another series). The games are fundamentally different enough to make that differentiation, and it would have given Sonic a more respectable placing on the list. (I will admit that the Adventure series couldn't be included, since it has only had 2 games.) I'm not even a Sonic fan, but if you get hate from Sonic fans, I feel like it's at least somewhat warranted. (Though the rabidity of any such hatred will likely be several volumes too high.)

Sonic's signature attribute of speed was ideal for early 2D platformers where you could dash through levels quickly, collecting rings and spinning through loops. They never fully figured out how to capture that same feeling in 3D.
@tinkerer3399 Жыл бұрын
I question that. Going through the early Sonic games (1-3+K) "speed" was really only a defining aspect of maybe 1/3 of the levels. I recently replayed the classic games and what really struck me was just how slow they were overall. The 3d Adventure games I think actually had more speed in their Sonic levels (which admittedly were only about 1/3 of the full game) than the 2d games did.
@AP-eq6fv Жыл бұрын
You're not wrong, but I think the bigger issue is how Sega treated Sonic vs how Nintendo treated Mario. In the beginning, they were both known for their "signature skill", Mario could jump and Sonic could run. While jumping did translate better to 3D than running for coins, Nintendo were smart in that they started varying Mario's roles early. By the time N64 came out, he was a doctor, tennis player etc. Even though he was a "jumping plumber", the "jump" aspect of his identity took on an increasingly smaller role. In the mean time, Sonic basically just ran faster and harder, and if it wasn't that, it was something closely related such as Sonic racing or the pinball game. They basically pidgeonholed him to a role that just doesn't translate very well to 3D while Mario had free reign to take on various roles and was thus better adaptable to new technologies. Why they're not trying to reinvent (or replace) him is beyond me.

There were only 2 EC games, but if one wanted to count spinoffs of the character before they entered the contest in limbo, there was Chicago Syndicate for Game Gear and one other game. Daytona never got sequels, just updates. But they made 4 TJ&E games, 1, Panic on Funkitron, the new release (if they count Shenmue as a Sega series despite the third game ridding itself of all Sega elements, the TJ&E should count too) plus Ready Aim Tomatoes on the Menacer 6 pack
