IIRC even Slipknot’s website had Mick listed as their “Lead Guitarist” for a long time. Over time I think Jim started playing more solos as he wrote more and more of the music.

You can tell Micks solos compared to Jims, Jims are more Apreggios whereas Micks sound more metally if u get what I'm saying lol (and Jims tone always seems a little softer)

Jim is a mastermind at winging it. He's a great writer, player, and performer. He writes the most unique riffs and solo's imo. You can feel it when Jim is playing. They're both amazing at their craft.

@@rafaelmatafora2876you clearly don’t know what is required to be at that level of music. Just as an example, composing solos like psychosocial would require a complete memorisation and understanding of the major, minor and pentatonic scales in every key to the point he’s just going autopilot improvising shit like that. On top of that at an extremely high speed which is difficult enough just trying to copy.

Sleeping on Mick is not wise. His technical abilities surpass Jim. They were putting out crazy solos long before Jim came around. Jim is more creative sounding but when you want technical mastery, Mick is the guy to go to...

Mick is definitely the most talented member in the band, Corey may have a god like voice, but he fucked up his voice badly because of his years of drug abuse and doesn't have refined techniques on screaming properly

I am pretty sure its Jim at 2:00 in Gematria. Its the warmer Fender sound and his "signature" scale that he uses in a ton of Stone Sour solos.

You can hear the difference in styles, Jim is much more I’d say “bluesy” while Mick really has that aggressive punch you in the throat style. Great combo, Mick can really put his spin on the brutal songs while Jim can really bring out the medium paced MASSIVE riffs/solos.

If you aren't familiar with each of their guitar tones, the easiest way to pick out a Mick solo from a Jim solo is hearing which side of your headphones you hear the guitar from. If its from the right side, its a Mick solo, left side is Jim.

Although I've tried many times over the years, I've never been able to find any live performance, guitar playthrough, or otherwise, video of Mick or Jim playing the (insanely technical) solos from the song Welcome... Makes me think maybe they were played buy a featuring artist, or, over engineered in the recording studio? Can anyone help me with this?

Mick has said they always play songs faster at shows then on the albums, which I guess is why they tend to not play the solos as on record

They just haven't played it live ever. Some songs they kinda just ignore. They play fast technical solos like Pulse Of The Maggots live, I don't see why they'd randomly have another person do a solo in their style on a song.

Solos on All Hope Is Gone are so good. Gehenna is underrated AF. Spiders is just awesome too, the tone and the licks on the solo are absolutely filthy.

I have a question...how do you tell who's solo is who's? I heard they often trade parts live. I don't doubt this video is right, I just don't know how 😂

Jim’s parts are in the left channel (speakers) and Mick’s parts are in the right channel. Sometimes its hard to say who’s playing the solo (ex. Gehenna) cuz its “coming” thru the main channel, in that case you just do your research

@DawgWhatsThisName Paul and Joey have been known as the primary writers for the first few albums. And there's 7 other members. I've heard that Mick and Jim actually don't do a lot of the writing for the band.
