​@tomie myspace The point was that he was weaker but quicker, with better stamina. The Arnolds is the premier competition, and as such, it should be the barometer used in judging strongmen in their respective eras. IFSA was also a better competition that WSM in its day.

His conditioning was absolutely unrivalled and he did exactly what he needed to win. He wasn't the static monster that Zydrunas was/is, but WSM isn't just that. Mariusz certainly deserves to be remembered as one of the best ever.

Mariusz is one of the greatest of all time, the only problem is that at the time the ASC and IFSA had taken a long shot on WSM and the sport was going many ways possible with those two contensts been arguably harder, also the thing about Derek Poundstone solely mistake at 2008. But at the end of the day yes, Mariusz won fair and square his 5 titles.

They didn’t ban him for dominance. That’s a media myth. They would have made more money and had more viewers keeping him there, especially with rival Jon Pall Sigmarsson. He was banned because he was verbally abusive to EVERYONE, refs, organizers, competitors etc. He was not liked in those days. He wasn't the loveable teddy bear he became years later. He was a ferocious grizzly bear who growled constantly. He constantly complained about every event, sometimes even during the event. Jon pall was the only one who liked him, nobody else could stand him. He was also a sore loser in any event he didn't win, he would make excuses or blame it on the refs/rules etc.

@@georgewagner2352 yup, that pretty much sums Kaz back in the day, you can even notice that kind of behaviour when he was called back in late 80's but at that time he wasn't the huge unbeatable scary beast from the early 80's, he was full of injuries and the sport became more professional during his absence.

Mariusz is, hands down, my favorite WSM champ of all time. There's just this intense aura about him I have not seen in any other WSM competitors. And unlike most strongmen sporting beer guts, he was always ripped like a bodybuilder.

Marius’ 5 titles should have an asterisk next to them. During his run the contest “IFSA Strongman” came about in 2005. Half the competitors switched over to that, including the defending Met-Rx WSM (who beat Marius), Vasyl Virastyuk! During Marius’ peak run he didn’t face Zadrunas or Vasyl!! Take away the mountain and Hall and how impressive would Shaw’s 4 titles be?

Sigmarsson, Magnusson, Taylor, Svend, Ahola and Samuelsson (just to name the champs) all were very lean and even ripped at some point in their career, but there were a bunch of strongman (specially during the 90's) that looked like bodybuilders, the thing is that Mariusz was ridiculous, but it's like saying Van der Parre was so tall not like most of strongman which have a regular height...

@Tyler Vincent That is true for a lot of guys. In the interview Loz did with Svend Karlsen, Svend says it pretty well... "You have to both be at your peak, have good events for you, and be lucky, in order to win multiple times." Any small mistake or bad luck can screw you over.

When Pudzian dominated, functional strength was emphasized over static strength in the WSM format. During his time, the heart muscle was tested as well as the skeletal muscles. In addition to being a freakishly powerful strongman, Pudzian extensively trained swimming, boxing, karate, rugby, running, stretching, etc. That's why his endurance was off the charts.

He didn't even live on that much glory because of Haftor complaining to his big fanbase about Eddie "cheating", even though all the referees and the other strongmen agreed on the decision made. Not much glory to live off of when a movie star makes thousands of people throw shit at Eddie.

Eddie did what was good for Eddie, which is OK in my view. He had to bring his weight down because his health was at risk, and being he's from Britain, he knew he could live off his 2017 win for years because another Brit won't win for years and years.

@@marks6663 So what? he set out a number of goals in life and he achieved them. He was, for a short time, but nonetheless the strongest man in the world. How would *you* feel if you achieved that? probably as if you were on top of the world I imagine. The way strongmen train is literally their life, it's not just a hobby. They have the same dedication as Shaolin Monks in the way that they revolve every minute of every day and night with religious fervour to bettering themselves and becoming stronger. I go to the gym and I'm in good shape, but I can't begin to imagine the amount of time and dedication (and pain) they're willing to endure to compete at this level. Doesn't matter who it is, if you've won World's Strongest Man once or ten times, you're worthy of respect, and Eddie Hall and every other strongman, both winners and losers, have mine because I sure as hell couldn't put my body through what they do on a daily basis, not to mention that and also trying to juggle that with your personal life and family etc.

This was amazing, thanks Loz! Those early WSM are fun to watch. For folks relatively new to the sport (meaning the last 20 years or so) go back and watch the beginnings. These were just some brutally strong men doing crazy stuff. Someone could walk in off the platform/farm/street and do just as well as anyone else because there were no standard events or equipment, no specialization, etc (I think one of those logs used in the early days still had the beaver attached!) Watching the progression to the organized sport we have now is a fun journey. Can't wait to see where it is 10 years from now. I've had the pleasure to meet Bruce W and Don (if that clip you have big Don speaking at the mic was from an AOBS dinner in NJ, I was there... I thought that backdrop looked familiar!). All these guys are great to talk to and really appreciate the opportunity to share their stories. Thanks for the walk down memory lane Loz, and I enjoyed the production on this video as well!

Looking back, it’s amazing the amount of athletes that came into the sport, got straight onto the podium and pretty much stayed there before moving on from the competition. It seems like something that’s probably not possible now, but it’s exciting to think that it could happen.

Just a tiny correction: Sigmarsson din't step away after '90, he was supposed to compete in WSM 1992. It was supposed to be Sigmarsson vs. Magnussen in Iceland. The evening before the first contest day, Sigmarsson tore his bicep and had to pull out. Event tester Ilkka Kinnunen was called in as a replacement after having done four days of event testing. Soon after, Sigmarsson passed away, and we never got that Icelandic showdown.
