Dibiase isn’t wrong here about Waltman in 1997. Sean Waltman at the time was viewed as a guy who could hold his end of the bargain in a match and in hindsight was somewhat of an unheralded innovator when it came to light heavyweights in wrestling with some of the crazy risks he’d take working in Global and later USWA. But during his first run in WWE he wasn’t necessarily driving ticket sales and was part of that second tier of wrestlers at that time which included Owen Hart, Goldust and Triple H all of whom were working underneath the big five of the “New Generation”: Hart, HBK, Hall, Nash and Taker. Waltman was actually released by WWF in 1996 with the full knowledge that he was going to waltz into WCW. He wasn’t viewed as a bankable commodity at that time. Waltman’s ascent really began with the year and a half he was in WCW where he got the rub from being part of the n.W.o. and was able to parlay that into a big return to WWE the following year where he did become a star.

That wasnt the reason why Nash slapped Piper backstage. Piper & Flair werent supposed to attack Nash & Hall before they got to the ring, it was all agreed on. Piper did the opposite, attacking them outside the ring, infuriating Nash. When he went to confront Roddy, he leg dived him(or attempted to) & Big Kev open-hand slapped him ONE TIME, & that was the end of it. This is per Kevin Nash from several sources, i.e. kayfabe commmentaries among others. I realize that Roddy has a different version and i wasnt there. I was a HUGE Kevin Nash fan back in the day, although his politics kinda turned me off once he became more active on social media. I've actually met him though and he's a pretty decent guy who's been through a LOT. Having said all that, the idea of Piper double legging him and throwing him out of the room is completely asinine. It literally would never happen. Kevin is an absolute monster who also had a boxing background, and a temper like a son of a bitch. He NEVER would have backed down from Piper. In Piper's day I'm sure he was tough, and Nash isn't Haku or Barbarian, but in a real fight Nash would go through him like it was nobody's business.
