Yeah I agree that Apple seems kind of lost regarding finding the purpose of their "newer" releases, they just kind of wait and see what people do with the device and try to add features to enhance whatever that is.

I think people are confused about what an IPad is not Apple. The IPad is for mobile computing. Also, people seem to think a device is useless because it can’t edit multiple threads of 4k. Meanwhile, a few years ago laptops couldn’t edit any 4k video. I didn’t see people accusing laptops of being useless. Technology is all about use case. Maybe your use case doesn’t work with IPad but for people who are only consuming media, email and maybe typing a simple word doc or simple excel or PowerPoint there is no reason an IPad can’t do it.

I actually use my M1 iPad 12.9” more than I use my iPhone and iMac combined. I older and don’t need to go anywhere to work - I’m a homebody, and I enjoy it. As you said the iPad is a great device for *consuming* and some light creating. I watch KZbin, TV shows, surf the web, play games, read the NY Times and play the crossword puzzle and Wordle, I answer calls on it, listen to music on it (alone or paired to headphones), I text, email, outline ideas for my writing, take notes, and much more! The screen looks great and is a good size for doing all that stuff. I will probably upgrade my iPhone soon and get around to replacing my iMac 27” with a MacBook Pro and a badass monitor, keyboard and mouse so I can have the full Mac experience when I want it. But honestly, sitting in my chair, on the sofa, or in bed…I’ll probably always be an iPad Pro guy. It just fits my interests and my lifestyle the best. Thanks for the video!

An interesting take on the range of computers supplied by apple. A lot of reviews are looking at the M4 chip being used to do more tasks. I hadn’t thought about the fan and heat side of scenario re using an ipad as a laptop. Thanks for the alternative view.
@MidnightHozz6 ай бұрын
Great point about the chipset and the thermals. I tested the 10th gen iPad and the 2024 Pro and Air models, all 11". Most people should just buy the 10th gen iPad. $325 on Amazon...it's a steal relative to the competition. I think the Pro was $950 and the Air $550. That said when you use them all side by side, if you can afford it, you'll end up buying the Pro for the screen alone. Once you see it you can't unsee it. For reference, I am 51 with once perfect and now failing vision who can't tell the difference between 720P and 1080P on my 75" Samsung while sitting on the couch. Only a blind person would not be blown away by this screen. As for the M4...it's overkill for anyone not content creating. And it will be overkill still when Apple EOLs it 6 years from now or whatever their schedule is.

Hi I think u made very good points and I would like to ask Should I buy it for games and videos? I am worried since I heard u saying it would throttle, cuz it has no fan, no good cooling Does it lagg? Or just get warm And how big are the black bars on videos?
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
Hi! I think you'll love gaming and watching videos on it. The M4 was made to be more efficient than the M2, and all iPad games were specifically made for the device, so you'll likely never notice a drop in performance. When I mentioned it doesn't have a fan I meant that if it ran macOS and all of its apps there would definitely be some throttling under heavier workloads, since those apps were made with traditional computers in mind. Watching videos is great on the OLED screen. On the 11" the black bars are not that big because it has a wider aspect ratio, but on the 13", since it's closer to a 4:3 aspect ratio, there are some considerable black borders. At least those pixels are completely turned off...

Also, a little note about the M3 vs M4, the M3 actually uses a much more expensive manufacturing process with much lower yields that has advantages over the M4 when it comes to higher core counts like the Max. So this was a cost decision by Apple :) - but as it also performs better on the low core count chips, it's a bit of a win win for everyone.
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
Yes!!!!! Also something I didn't mention in the video, but honestly it puzzles me why Apple released the M3 MBA just 1 month before the iPad Pro. They really must have wanted the iPad to steal the spotlight in order to release new MBAs with a hotter, less efficient processor.
@DigiDriftZone6 ай бұрын
I just bought a 12.9" M1 just because a 512gb+5g is 1/3 of the price of an M4 equivalent (£570 vs £1700), that's just insane value. Plus it's more durable and the speakers sound better (to me anyway). The MiniLED 120hz display also holds up very well, while not as nice as the new OLED, it's a lot nicer than the 11" display of the previous pro or the display on the air. Overall I'm happy with the purchase but I totally agree with you that it is heavy. While having something thinner/lighter would be nice, I find the biggest issue is the 4:3 aspect ratio and size makes it very awkward to type on or reach across the screen with your thumb while holding it. But then on the 11" stage manager is near unusable and you lose quite a lot in terms of ability to multitask.
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
I had to cut some parts out of the video because it was waaaaaay too long but in my original take I mentioned that getting a refurbished M1 was much better value than the new M4 or the M2 Air overall. Because I had 2 12.9 inch pros I eventually realized the size made it less easy to use for me, so trying out the 11" was both awesome and challenging, because I do miss the extra screen real estate, but at the same time it just felt better and wasn't as awkward to use in a wider variety of scenarios.

Okay you have a different perspective of it. But I am one of them who uses the iPad only model. I don’t have a mac in any form since I only had the budget to take one and leave another so I thought of buying an iPad Pro 11 inch M1 and am using it since more than 2.5 years. In my profession I could do everything I could on a mac on my iPad. That is how professionally viable is the software and hardware designed but still just coz of the workarounds that I experience daily, I would have been better off the mac then an iPad. For such users like me, I would say, we need the macOS like features for the day to day use. They placed it right in between the mac and iPhone. But made the pro max version of iPhone a better product for content consumption and MacBook Air has no fan and has the same chip and has better user interface than the iPad. They made the iPad have a pencil and a keyboard. This makes us more productive by letting us write tonnes of notes saving 1000s of kilos of paper. They made it support the external monitor thus adding more utility to the overall experience. Now it is no longer just a content machine that you are putting into perspective. There are a plethora of work apps which I use daily which are available for both mac and iPad and equally compatible. Just a tad bit of fine tuning required and completely not available on Samsung products. Why can’t they make the os mac like. Both products would still co-exist. Just that the price would become even more justifiable and more people would join their ecosystem

There are many things I agree with in your video, but there are some parts that I don't. Apple embraces the modularity of the iPad. As someone who accepted my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard as a “laptop alternative,” I was pleasantly surprised that I could legitimately and effectively replace my specific use case for my MacBook after iOS 17. The major perk of this setup is that I only have to carry the iPad with me and can unattach the keyboard when I need it as a super tablet. The combination of the M4 iPad Pro 13 with the Magic Keyboard is now almost the same weight as a MacBook Air. I doubt that's a coincidence. The iPad Pro M4 with the keyboard can handle most light, medium, and even some heavy computer work effectively, but some tasks are frustratingly held back due to seemingly fixable issues in iPadOS. I believe it is safe to say that Apple supports and even advertises overlaps between the iPad, iPhone, and MacBook, as long as they can't completely replace each other.
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
I do think it can be a laptop alternative, just not a replacement. Many people can probably get work done on the iPad, but I just don't feel like it's the best productivity tool for most. For digital art it's great, some *light* photo and video editing as well, taking notes, etc... But even for "basic" admin tasks, MS Office for iPad is ridiculously limited. Photoshop for iPad lacks over 50% of the features, and most iPad counterparts to Mac/Windows apps fall behind, even Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve are still so much better on the Mac. I think the iPad has a lot of potential, but it only shines when developers put effort into making the best out of its form factor and capabilities, finding new ways to achieve the same results, more intuitive ways, iPad ways. But that takes time, money and a lot of dedication. Unfortunately by the time developers make really Pro apps for the iPad the right way, it will probably have been replaced already by something like the Vision Pro. I mean, think how long it took web developers to replace Adobe Flash for online videos and games, it took at least 5 years for most video platforms to work on the iPad's Safari. The transition time sucked, but now we're all better off without it. I don't think using an iPad as their main computer is worth the frustration for most people.

Great critique. I'd completely agree with you if not for the fact that Apple forces consumers to buy the 1TB model if they want the nano texture option. What artist needs a minimum 1TB of space in order to take advantage of the best screen and textured surface? It costs an additional USD 600 to upgrade from 256GB to 1TB too - the cost of a new iPad Air.

Thanks for this very interesting perspective. I just bought an iPad M4 Pro that costed five times as much as the android tablet it replaced. I’m trying to justify to myself why I paid so much. Most other reviewers are whining about the lack of laptop features in a device that costs as much as a laptop/desktop. I can sympathize with this, as it would be nice to have one device that could function as a tablet when you need portability and the touchscreen, then as a desktop when you need to take advantage of a full screen and keyboard. Maybe someday there’ll be one MacOS where you could simply switch between tablet and desktop modes. Microsoft Windows has something like this, though I can’t say that I like it very much. I have a touchscreen Windows laptop, which I found to be a miserable failure as a tablet - big and clunky, with lousy battery, life, and loud fan. For now, I only need the iPad to be a tablet. I have a MacBook Pro M1 Max that I use for music production and for other tasks that benefit from a larger screen and multiple windows and files. iPad OS is just not well suited for some types of work. But after using my iPad for less than a week, I can say I’m finding it to be a brilliant tablet - much better than the android. I’m also glad that I got the Magic Keyboard, as I don’t like typing on the screen for emails, notes and such (including KZbin comments 😊), though I am using the excellent dictation feature more and more. Also, I am finding the keyboard controls and shortcuts very nice, as I am used to them from the MacBook.

Everyone who has this mindset conveniently misses 2 things: 1. The iPad Pro’s have desktop chips & are priced like laptops. 2. Their direct competitors (Samsung Tabs) have desktop functionality via DEX. & regardless of how good/bad it is, they give their users the choice of how they want to use their $1000+ tablets.
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
Just because they're priced like laptops, doesn't mean they should be thought of as laptop replacements. I mean, price is pretty relative. They're also priced like iPhones, the 11" Pro costs the same as the iPhone 15 Pro and the 13" Pro costs just $100 more than the 15 Pro Max. The 13" iPad Air costs the same as the Apple Watch Ultra, so... should we think about iPads as iPhone replacements or Apple Watch replacements? Not really... If you think about it, the new iPad Pros could be considered Apple's best *monitor* replacements, since they have *better* displays than Apple's $5000 Pro Display XDR (sans-stand)!!!!!! If you look at it from that perspective they're actually a bargain! (And yes they could be considered monitors because you can either use Side car or just get a capture card and connect HDMI or USB-C to them and use a third party app and voilà, you just saved $4000).
@_basedperry6 ай бұрын
@@VKTR_Tech Apple advertised them as Laptop replacements for years. Specifically the iPad Pro. They don’t get to walk that back now that they realized it would demolish their bottom line in the Mac sector. Those “what’s a laptop” ads still affect the way the iPad is viewed today. As far as iPhones go, are the pro models too expensive? Maybe, but the iPhone fills a unique product category that doesn’t run into anything else. The only iPad that comes close is the mini, which some people have used as a iPhone replacement due to its pocket ability. Comparing an iPad to an Apple Watch is lazy, completely different product category, completely different consumer base. The fact is, most people who buy a $1000 tablet would only benefit from more personal computer like functionality & it’s weird that people defend apples reluctance to give it some. Especially when even the air is underutilized by the current version of iPad OS. At the very least there should be a native solution that allows me to virtually control my Mac while away from it. Not over the same network, I’m talking me being at a Starbucks, pulling up my Mac to work on something I left behind using my cellular network.

Here’s the dilemma - iPads, Macs, iPhones, Apple Watch, and similar products from Android and Microsoft: They are ALL computers by definition. They have processors of every kind, RAM, storage, and some kind of OS. They perform specific tasks when aksed of them. They are ALL computers. The problem that messes up everything is how society has created many different definitions of this idea of what a computer is, and then ranks them as to what is and isn’t a computer. And then that gets broken down even further into hybridizations. The most common one, and the one that is the most problematic, is defining a computer based on its ability to perform specific tasks. In other words, MANY people believe that the more “professional” tasks a device can perform, the more it’s defined as a computer, and the less (“more casual?”) tasks a device can perform, the less it’s defined as a computer. This…is total BS. For the most part, structurally and functionally, a computer is a computer is a computer. They are designed to do “computer things” at different levels of performance and complexity. Since the topic of this video is about the iPad Pro, this device does exactly what it can do to various levels. The Macbook does exactly what it can do to various levels. Just because one kind of device can do some things better than another doesn’t mean that the latter is “not a computer”. I sometimes cringe every time I hear someone say that putting MacOS on a iPad Pro will make it a “computer’. I mean that’s “professional”, right? 🤦♂️. We have to stop defining these things based on our own personal biases. Someone who makes a living processing Word docs on an entry-level iPad 10 is a professional. Someone who makes a living doing CAD work on a loaded Macbook Pro is a professional. Why do we have categorize one as more “pro” than another? It’s not a matter of being “better or worse” that defines what a computer is - or what a professional is. Seems that very, very few people can grasp this concept.
@VKTR_Tech6 ай бұрын
I couldn't have said it better myself. Most reviews we watch, naturally, come from video creators/editors, so they think a computer is what works well for *those* tasks. Many of them are completely oblivious to the pros and cons of the iPad for many workflows. For example, I rely on Excel and Powerpoint for 90% of my work, and the iPad version of those apps are incredibly limited (no pivot tables or auto-object alignment), to the point that it would take me 5 hours to do something on the iPad compared to 1 hour on Windows or macOS, the same way that I'm sure there are workflows that are actually much faster on the iPad compared to a laptop. Different computers, for different needs, for different people.
