i think i like the hotdog universe the most, not just because it's so silly but for a deeper reason early on, evelyn is venting to joy about how she feels like their auditor targets chinese and other immigrants. we see diedre eventually making condescending remarks towards them about their race and inability to understand tax lingo, so we can assume that evelyn's assumption is for good reason, they are practically enemies in the main universe. but when we see more and more of the hotdog universe, we see that evelyn and diedre are not only running the laundromat together, they are doing VERY well. their clothes, haircuts, their apartment, and their dinners are much classier. not only this but they are also LOVERS in this universe. lovers who are enamored with a strange hotdog bollywood film to the point where they play the soundtrack at home and know the dances. and i think there's something profoundly beautiful about that. we may never see a universe where our biggest enemies are in love with us, but imagining it happening in another universe, it makes you feel like dropping your guard, in a very peaceful way. also PS: when she shouts "youre not unlovable!" to diedre, with her responding "w-what are you talking about...??" it just STRIKES me through the heart because in an instant, evelyn was able to pinpoint what made diedre so sour and bitter, thinking she was completely unlovable after her own divorce.

I also love it, but I have noticed that this is the most misunderstood universe of all by a lot of KZbinrs reacting to the movie. Their repulsion towards the hot dog fingers, and being focused on how “gross” it is to them, completely blinds them to the themes, the story and the message within it. Such a shame.
@zekiaydn9081 Жыл бұрын
so this movie is a perfect representation of psychedelic experience as a whole but the hotdog universe demonstrates it best. lets treat the psychedelic you take as an entity. it puts you on the weirdest and silliest universes on purpose. and you know its weird, you don't just accept it like in a dream. at first you are like wtf is this place, you think its crazy, you laugh etc. if it stopped the experience here you would get sucked into the nihilistic black hole (the bagel) bcs it just shows you the sheer absurdity of our reality and make no mistake this is the truth, the universe is wild place. but it continues to give you the most genuine and touching experiences (a slight homophobic woman in a very loving relationship with another woman), even in a stupid stupid universe you find meaning and here I think it diverges from existentialism, you don't create the meaning you don't need to, meaning is inherent property of the universe just like absurdity. these all are great and all but what seals the deal is in the highest of thoughts and emotions silliest thing happens (removing tears with feet). you were in a vast ocean of love and meaning and it slaps you with the absurdity again. this makes you see the universe as a whole, as complete. you experience meaning and absurdity at the same time. you cry and laugh at the same time. if you like this movie and its message try reconsidering your views about psychedelic drugs. bcs in the psychedelic experience you are the Evelyn, that's why it can be so impactful regarding your psychological and spiritual growth

There's also a whole lot in there about depression, which can easily overpower any feelings of love you might have for someone for the feeling that everything that's troubling you will stop if you just die, as well as the idea it'll be better for those you love if you're not there to be a fuck up around them anymore (which is false, but depression is a very convincing liar) On top of that the directors have said that Evelyn was written as having ADHD, which anyone with ADHD can tell you it's really hard to get your life in order when everything is screaming at you, everywhere, all at once, all the time. Which is probably why as someone with depression and ADHD, this movie hit me like a ton of bricks. (Also I knew I knew the song they kept referencing but hadn't bothered to look it up, so thanks for naming it for me)

I struggled with depressive episodes a few times myself; and I couldn't understand why people laughed at the rocks scene. At times I felt like that, curling into a rock; hard and emotionless, without life. That quiet scene hit me like a (ha) rock. Once I read a cool way of putting it: depression is your own mind brewing conspiracy theories about yourself. It convinces you of false, disturbing things. That you're not loved, nor lovable. That you don't matter. That you won't have energy to live. All of those are lies made up by your brain, but as you say: that f$%er is a very convincing liar. Here's a hug from somewhere else in the world. And also, as someone who lost an uncle to suicide: if any of you reading this feel lonely, trapped on this downward feeling, SEEK HELP. Talk to a friend, call a line, seek therapy; whatever you need. People (yes, even strangers online) love you as you are, and want you around in this crazy world of us.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" is a wonderfully insane film. Kwan and Scheinert deserve an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay at the very least -- their multiverse is multilingual to start, plus the humor and the numerous references. Plus, they cast Jamie Lee Curtis to play the heavy to boot! Michelle Yeoh is awesome, for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) alone, but so much more. She was a wuxia movie star in this universe back in the nineties -- "Holy Weapon" (1993), "Tai Chi Master" (1993), "Moonlight Express" (1999), "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) -- the later won four Oscars. She also played a Star Trek Captain and she also has a role in the Avatar sequel coming out later this year. She's on a roll this year! I found the scene in the rainy alley way evocative of Wong Kar-wai's "In the Mood for Love" (2000). And the zaniness of some of the martial arts scenes reminds me of the films of Stephen Chow, "Shaolin Soccer" (2001) and "Kung Fu Hustle" (2004) in particular. Message? Perhaps, reject nihilism in whichever multiverse you find yourself in.

I connected with Evelyn the most. She is a middle-aged woman who questions about her decision in life--pond about the what ifs. She has damaged the relationship with her husband, her daughter and her father because she doesn't fully accept who she is. So to me, Evelyn's character speaks to many of us who have lived in this earth for 40+ years. At one point you have to feel happy and satisfied of your life. If you don't, the negativity can project and damage your relationship with others. Once Evelyn accepts Waymond for who he is (a kind and loving person), then she finally finds happiness. My favorite scene is the moment of Evelyn remembering her fond memories of Waymond. I love the shot of the multi-colour glowing on Evelyn's face when she looks aimlessly and just smiles. That was the best moment for me.

As a movie that is about acceptance and kindness (along with depression issues, ADHD etc.) above all else - this is truly a remarkable movie. Ke Huy Quan left acting, but was still a stunt coordinator and fight choreographer since the early 90s and boy does it show in this movie. Also, he's an amazing actor and it's so awesome to see him back again. Also of note, the two um, butt plug guys are part of a KZbin channel named Martial Club who do their own martial arts videos and homages to old Hong Kong kung fu movies etc. and I believe those two worked on the fighting scenes in this movie as well (along with their whole team of course) - and the one guy who had the trophy up his butt played the masked trainer/enforcer for the Mandarin in Shang-Chi as well. And yes, this is one of only a handful of movies to ever make you laugh out loud and then cry basically at the same time. The writing, acting, fighting, effects (on a fairly small budget mind you) and ideas in the movie are amazing. If this movie doesn't win some awards, fuck the awards companies.

My favourite universe was actually the one where life didn't evolve. Mainly because it was the perfect respite from the whiplash absurdity that was experienced by the audience up until the moment that was designed to break them from their reality, allowing them to fully focus on and empathise with the characters and join with them for the next part of their ride, accepting and feeling all that came next. The art in making this movie was just so strong, although it will be interesting to see if the Academy can overcome it's inherent resistance to genre projects when it comes to non-technical awards. [It was Michelle who insisted that the conversation there be in text, btw.] My favourite Evelyn was of course the Kung Fu universe because it mostly was Michelle Yeoh's own actual universe (including working with a pseudo Cynthia Rockwell and starring in the same movies that she did). Easily one of the best films I have seen in a long time and so far this year - #1! I lack the vocab to fully describe it but man does this movie make you think about it LONG after you see it. Truth be told it really made me think about the "what if" aspect for myself in one way or another for better or worth but at the end of the day . . . we have the universe...the life we have made for ourselves...even the hot dog fingers (which while funny - J.L.C's role was rather depressing if you think about it with her story till the end) and cheeseburger feet we make our lives what they are. The action, writing, humor, the AMAZING idea itself was executed so well! This movie dumps so much at the audience - yet it makes it look easy! I love the Marvel films and most Mad Max films but every once in a while an "Avatar" movie comes out that captures the audience all over the world and this one is such a nice breath of fresh air as far as cinema experiences go - I am SO happy its still going strong in theaters. Also the fact that they knew the audience would be like "WHAT?" at the hot dog world - they bother spending a minute showing that the human species was killed off and Hot Dog Fingers made it . . . HOW?! lol who cares just roll with it. The dad's chair pulling a transformers at the end had me in stitches but my god James Hong's still got it! The ending had my eyes going - even in a room of other dudes when I watched it - sure it has its humor thrown in at random moments but when it throws an emotional punch - it doesn't pull. ;)

After the movie, you gave a very "dumbed down" version of the plot, but the fact is that WAS the plot. It doesn't have to make sense. Just "be a rock", and "nothing matters". The movie has very heavy tones of what my husband calls "cheerful nihilism" (nothing matters, so lets just have fun and enjoy life) and what I've heard others call existentialism. At the core, it's a movie about familial love and generational trauma and learning to be happy where you are - wherever you are. It's a beautifully filmed movie, with a deep message delivered in a tongue in cheek fashion. Even my husband thought it was a good movie (and he's notoriously picky and not fond of this type of movie, but he sat through it and didn't fast forward through any "slow parts" because the movie didn't HAVE ANY). It's a 2 hour movie that feels like 90 minutes because of how FAST everything goes. From casting to execution, I literally can't think of anything they could have done to make this film better.

Evelyn has lived a life of doing what was expected of her by her dad and husband and she's trying to make Joy do the same. Around the 3rd act she sees what her life (lives?) could have been if she was making the decisions and it dawns on her that she's crushing her daughter's spirit the same way hers was. Let Joy be who she is and she can manifest any potential she wants.

Fun fact, Raccacoonie is voiced by an uncredited RANDY NEWMAN, who is also singing the Raccacoonie theme song.

YESSSSS. I come week after week to you folks to watch BSG with you, and now you're covering the BEST movie I saw in a long time (together with Jojo Rabbit, that you also watched with us). I sobbed like a baby throughout, and specially on rewatching it by my own at home. I felt and related a lot to the deeper meaning of it, the visual metaphors about it, and the amazing acting. Let's see (I write before hitting play) how it felt to Mr. and Ms. Movies...

Looking at Mrs. Movies shirts are my 2nd favorite part of this channel. The 1st of course is her reactions to these different films and series.

they cut one of the universes- it's shown in the dvd deleted scenes- there's macaroni boy and his pasta mom- he wants to get stuck to the wall to be sure he's done.

28:07 In Japanese it's like a manrikigusari, a little different though, they're shorter with weights on both ends. Edit: Ah in Kung Fu it's a rope dart.

Good to Mrs. Movies enjoying the Hot Dog Fingers. I hated them personally, but to see someone enjoying them so, makes me enjoy them too.

You are the only reactors I have seen who noticed that the karaoke machine IS a business expense. I think it's on purpose to show that Waymond's easy-going, compliant way of facing problems isn't always the right way, since he says Evelyn makes mistakes instead of pushing back.

I think the film is telling us that IRS is the pain in the ass... that is why they awarded butt plugs....

34:10 Yeah same. Watched it a lot and I am still confused as to what the transition was. It seemed her original reality died, so not sure how it turned up again later
