Same! I saw an interview a while ago with the Daniels and they said that when they were writing the script, they felt that the entire movie up til that point had been leading up to that laundry and taxes line, so it was crucial that it landed right. And I would say they (and Ke!) absolutely nailed it. Tears every time!

@@Redneckrampage I agree, but others have mentioned that oftentimes the Oscars are sometimes more about recognizing a career over a single role. Stephanie Hsu was absolutely amazing. But this was the first time Jamie Lee Curtis was ever even nominated for an Oscar, which is a damn shame. So it's kind of making up for all the times she's been snubbed. Hsu is still early in her career, so I hope she'll still win one soon.

The laugh-cry is a powerful force. Made even more so here because we’ve been set up with such lunacy early on, we are emotionally primed. Then the film switches gear, showing us it’s true intent, and hitting us deep with subjects anyone can identify with.

I've watched many channels react to this movie and for the most part they've all had an emotional reaction. Arianna's reaction is honestly the first one I've seen that I feel completely matched mine. Depth and all. Her reaction was essentially my reaction. It must take a certain courage to put your full vulnerable state up for all to see but I love that channels like this one exist.

This movie is so stupid!! Is what i was saying at the theater while wiping ALL of the tears off my face. I can't believe something so stupid but even more beautiful could have come out of someone's mind (the Daniels). Like the absurdity and chaos was needed to balance out the dark tones of this masterpiece. It really describes my entire life from birth to now with my parents and personal life. You should watch their 1st film "swiss army man." It's about loliness, depression, social anxiety/awkwardness and farts. The first fart makes you laugh, the last fart makes you cry. Like how rocks made you cry here, farts make you cry on swiss army man... it also has great music... speaking of music check out the Daniels' music videos too. These guys are my new heros!

Great reaction! The movie had the same effect on me and instantly became one of my all-time favorites. I caught even more things the second time I watched it. Then I made two different groups of friends watch with me so they would be exposed to it. I'm sure others will mention the cameos that the directors made, or the KZbin channel that the two fight coordinators have, or the story of Ke Huy Quan. I am so happy to see that there are still people out there taking chances with movies and when it is done impeccably, like this one was, it still gets rewarded with all the popularity and awards this film has garnered.

📌I didn't fully understand the multiverse and the technology, but the reason I loved this movie is because of the themes: 1. Regret - you've done nothing with your life and you wish there is another version of you that was successful and married the person of your dreams. 2. Existential Crisis - if the entire universe will eventually die then what is the point of doing anything. 3. Depression - it's like a black hole that's hard to get out of and the daughter thinks death is the only escape.

My mom died back in 08 when I was 17, I like to imagine that in another universe I’m actually happy and my mom is still alive. In another place, I am healthy, in another world I’m still with the love of my life and never had an abortion for our child. A world where I am successful and don’t just live off my father in a general sense of self loathing and failure. These last ten years have blown by and I never caught a ride. Filled with nothing.

After everything that happens, we're left with a fractured but whole version of Evelyn, and a fractured but whole version of Joy/Jobu. They're both original universe versions of themselves but also every other version of themselves. Should Jobu be facing a war crimes tribunal? She's killed thousands of Evelyns, one prime Gong Gong, and at least three (two?) security guards at the very least. Some poor girl is going to have to live with a pile of confetti for her Daddy the rest of her life. Does that seem fair to you? Maybe the sequel will be Evelyn getting metaversal karma back in line.

i don't like this movie. it's sentimental in a way that a lot of asian movies are but it just rubs my western sensibilities the wrong fucking way. it's sloppy. it has waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much exposition. it's bites too much from the matrix. it's kind of sad to see post middle age kung fu that's really not very well choreographed. compare this to something like crouching tiger, hidden dragon and it JUST falls soooooooo short. i mean, there's one TERRRRRIBLE shot where short round can't even get his leg straight on a kick and i just want to curl up and implode in a cringe singularity. ... AND YET!!! it is sooooo UNDENIABLY EMOTIONALLY AFFECTING. i can bitch all day long about everything that i feel is not good or right about the movie... but SOMEHOW... put all of that together, the melange of elements, the fusion of every imperfect part working together... and it WORKS. beyond all my ability to deny or even rationalize... it just works. i still don't like this movie. but i simply can't refute the fact that it works. where so many other better made movies don't. so yeah... wtaf was that lol?

There are a suprising number of people who hated this movie. EEAaO has basically two levels. The most obvious level is the depiction of the standard, and very painful, divide that exists between wild young daughters yearning to be themselves and run free and mothers stuck in very mundane and unremarkable lives hoping to guide their daughters into a better, more acomplished lives through the imposition of criticism and the exercise of control over them. This first level inntertwines very nicely with the deeper level best described as the triumph of positive nihilsim as a way of life. What is to happen to all of us who fail to achieve massive success in life? One answer is to just live our normal-person lives, enjoy our families, and be kind to everyone around us. If the viewer had close and loving relationships his or her parents, and if the viewer has strong religious faith as the anchor of their existence, this movie will fly right over their heads and be seen as a meaningless mish-mash of confusion and crass sex jokes. There are apparently lots of people out there who fit that general description. But the majority of us had conflicted parent-child relationships and don't possess a lot of faith, and for us, the movie hits really hard, in a good way. When putting together a work of art, it is pretty much guaranteed that you won't please everyone.
